Kiwi,

my copy of the Clannad in Concert LP has a sheet with all the lyrics, so in principle it would be easy, but there are two problems...
A minor problem is that I do not speak Gaelic and would have to type it down letter by letter
The big problem is that the text sheet does not use the alphabeth I know but the Gaelic alphabeth. I do not know how to do the transcription (I even would have typed the title wrong).
I could send you a photocopy of the lyrics via snail mail (or to anybody who cares to do the trancription into a better known alphabeth). Drop me a mail with your snail mail address if you agree with that idea (hell@psy.uni-muenster.de).
I am not able to solve the other problem (translation) for you.

Wolfgang

Wolfgang,

Thanks for your kind offer.. but I'm afraid that I'm not allowed to get snail mail at my house from online people.. my parents would go ballistic. Security reasons and all that. As for it being in the Gaelic alphabet.. if it's the accents and all that that you're worried about, common practice is to type a slash after the accented letter. For instance, Slan, with the accent over the a, can be typed "Sla/n,". I know that's really a pain for you, but that's about the only way I can think of for you to get the lyrics to me. If you're able to do so, I'd be exceedingly grateful.

Sla/n, Kiwi

Kiwi,

never mind the typing, I'd do that, not much pain involved. And I'm not afraid of the accents but of "all that". The shape of several letters is not known to me. There's a letter resembling a small greek delta (an s?), there's a letter resembling a large greek delta (a?), there's a letter faintly resembling a small greek zeta (no idea), there's a letter a kind of mixture between a small greek sigma and a 6 (b?), and some others. Can you imagine how awful it'll look, if I get it (consistently?!) wrong.

Here's a sample how I would type it (if pressed to make my own decision about the transcription). Could someone tell me please how far that is from perfection? I'd go on if it's tolerable:

Seo amrán zrá ina ndeireann an file zo dtuz an cailín seo droí baill amaí air. Ba dine bean uí laoi a cuala muid az ceol an amrán seo.

Wolfgang (who for once takes no responsibility for typos in the lyrics)

Wolfgang -

Hm.. interesting. I have a Gaelic-English dictionary here, and I don't recognize any of the letters you describe, unless it's one of those thingies like my Cyrillics program where the screen shows some alternate character instead of an accented letter. I'll poke through the dictionary and see if I can figure out what the words might be (and thus, the weird letters). I can't promise, but I'll get back to you if I come up with anything. Anyone else have any ideas?

Dia dhuit a Kiwi,

Conas a ta/ tu/? Long time no write as I've been off net. I actually thought you were the one who gave me the lyrics, but obviously not. I don't know if these fit the Clannad version perfectly, but you should be abvle to nut something out.

(And now I've just noticed that there are no accents. Maybe Wolfgang can figure out where they go from this)

Go n-eiri/ an bothar leat, a cuisle

Benjamin

MAIRE BRUINNEAL

Ta bab dheas gheanamhail 'san ait nach bhfuilim
Is aille maise is feachaint,
Agus gradh go dtug di thar mhnaibh na cruinne
Is go brath ni thig lion a seanadh.

Ta pioba a brollaigh ar li na h-eala
Ag eirghe ar maidin la greine,
Is a gnaoi comh maiseamhail le realt an earraigh
Is a ciabh mar chleite an fheich dhuibh.

Mo chain o Dhoire go hEirne;
B'e an sta bhi orm brog' arda is buclai
Is ni airmhim culaidh mhaith eadaigh.

'San ait nach gculinim go sgeala;
'S go mb'fhearr lion tamall de la os do choinne
Na ar fhas de chruithneacht i n'Eirinn.

Is truagh gan mise 's mo phlannda i n-inis
Taobh thoir de Bhaile Chuil Raithne,
Faoi bheal na Binne no'r bhruach na Finne
No ag feachaint luingis ar saile.

Oidhche is maidin o! Bim ag machtnamn
Ca bhfuairtheas a maise 's a mein mhaith.
'S narbh' aoibhinn m'aigneadh acht i bheit in m'aice
Is da mbinn gan bacghail fein lei.

Da bhfaghmuist uain is la gan duadh
Ba ghearr ar gcuairt san ait seo;
I ngleanntan chumhang no 'n-are-choillidh thuas
Dheanaimist ar gcumann 's ar n-arus.

Nar mheanair ar gcumann gan aoinneach umainn
Acht geaga na coilleadh 'n-ar lathair-ne
Se dearfadh gach duine gur laghach ar n-imtheacht
Mar d'ealuigh Diarmaid agus Grainne.

Go h-eag go bhfuilim i ngradh lei;
Ta neart nach bhfeicthear is go leor a cheiltear
Ata ar a ndicheall 'a sarughadh.

Sharuigh sin orm is go saruighidh ortha
Is mna na cruinne go dtreigfead

Benjamin's versions does not fit the two lines in my version (and I can't imagine I'm so far off that it''s unrecognizable). I'll be back next week with the Clannad lyrics to see whether the other parts fit.

Two possible solutions for Kiwi to get the Clannad version lyrics:
I snailmail them to someone without security problems who can read Gaelic and is willing to type them.
Someone can direct me to a page with transcription rules from the Gaelic to the usual alphabeth and I'll type the lyrics.

Wolfgang

Mick - The title is a woman's name, the subject of the song. So whatever the title translates to.. Mary Brown? Anyone venture a guess here? I'm not up on Gaelic names except my own..

Benjamin - that's just the problem. I think I did send you those lyrics, but I can't figure out which verses apply to the song. I can't even figure out the one that opens "Oh Mhaire Bhruinneal", the very first one! So I figured that it'd be easier to ask for a direct transcript from the album if such existed.

Wolfgang - thanks for your kind offer... I'm amenable to either of those.. any volunteers? :)

Máire Bhruinneal means "grown-up Mary".

I wonder if you're actually looking for a song called

"An Mhaighdean Mhara" - The Mermaid - which has a line

where the mermaid mother is swimming out at sea and

singing in to her children, Máire and Pádraig, and

she refers to "Máire bhruinneal".

If so, you'll find the words on an album called

Amhráin ar an Sean-Nós, published by RTE in Ireland.

It's available through Claddagh Records in Cecilia

Street, Dublin.

Kiwi,

it looks as if you would get your lyrics rather later than sooner. I'll snailmail a copy of the lyrics to Benjamin. I had a new look at them today. The lyrics Benjamin has psted share the title with the Clannad lyrics and that's it. The little bit I have posted is, so I think now, a note to this song and not part of the lyrics.

1
Orú Mháire Bhruinneal bláth na Finne
‘ndaidh mé do lean aint anair anall
O ba bhinne liom do bhéal nó no cuacha Seinm
‘S tú dfhág mise I ndeallaraí ‘ bháis

2
A Mhéid é mo thuirse níor lear domh
A choinneal deir siad gur mise a Mheallas na mná

Cúrfa
Mharaigh tú go deo mé
Lagaigh tú go mór mé
‘Gus gach a bhfuil beo domh bhris tú mo chroí

3
Bhí a trí-point óir leí síos go triogh
Agus í a gcarrnú ar gach taobh

Cúrfa

4
Bí mé lá go ceolmar in sa ród
Tarlaigh domhsa ‘n óig bhean chiúin

(Now hope you know enough Irish to understand instructions! Cúrfa is chorus, Ceathrú 1 aris means repeat verse 1)

If you need the words to "An Maighdean Mhara" here they are. I'm not quite sure which song you are looking for.

An Mhaighdean Mhara

I cosúil gur mheath tú nó gur thréig tú an ghreann,
Tá an sneachta go frasach fá bhéal na trá,
Do chúl buí daite is do bhéilín shámh.
Siúd chugaibh Mary Chionnaith
Is í i ndéidh an Éirne a shnámh.

A mháithrín mhilis dúirt Máire bhán,
Fá bhruach an chladaigh is fá bhéal na trá,
Maighdean mhara mo mháithrín ard.
Siúd chugaibh Mary Chionnaith
Is í i ndéidh an Éirne a shnámh.

Tá mise tuirseach agus beidh go lá
Mo Mháire bhruinneall is mo Phádraig bán,
Ar bharr na dtonna is fá bhéal na trá.
Siúd chugaibh mary Chionnaith
Is í i ndéidh an Éirne a shnámh.

It striles me that there are two songs here. The very first one beginning:-
"Ta bab dheas gheanamhail 'san ait nach bhfuilim Is aille maise is feachaint,
Agus gradh go dtug di thar mhnaibh na cruinne Is go brath ni thig lion a seanadh.
Ta pioba a brollaigh ar li na h-eala Ag eirghe ar maidin la greine,
Is a gnaoi comh maiseamhail le realt an earraigh Is a ciabh mar chleite an fheich dhuibh. "
has the rhythmical characteristics of a Donegal song known as "Inis Dhún Rámha." and indeed some of the ;yrics bare more than a passing resemblance to same.
The second posted by Benjamin cannot be sung to this air and is, I suggest, another song entirely.
"An Mhaighdean Mhara" is another Donegal song and has nothing whatsoever to do with the songs just mentioned.

Benjamin's version is the one on the Clannad in Concert album...

I for one am very grateful to at last have the actual lyrics as I have been singing it based on my own "ear" pronunciation for years! Relearning it in the proper Irish (I had most of right thanks to soe instruction in the language, but did have about 25% of it wrong...) has been a very educational experience. Thanks again!

Benjamin, I wonder if you know of lyrics to "Crann Ull" also by Clannad? There WAS a thread dedicated to it but the lyrics kindly provided were not wuite what is sung on their album of the same name...or ratherm the first song on that album which if memory serves me is the title track (hard to find it in the States).
