Subject: TFTD- Merry Samhain/Halloween 31/10/02 From: katlaughing Date: 31 Oct 02 - 12:21 PM I am sorry that this is a little late in the day for those of you across the pond, but this is my favourite holiday and I didn't want to let it pass without notice. So, Merry Samhain/Hallowe'en to you and yours! I've just cut up my first pumpkin in about 4 years and had a blast. I love the scent. It assails my senses, bringing back such wonderful memories of my children and I having so much fun cleaning them out, then cutting out their visages, from the not-so-scary cat faces to the elaborate, wicked fright faces of my son's imagination. This is the holiday when I miss my kids the most. I miss the ritual. When we first moved to New England, from Wyoming, we'd never seen pumpkins as big as they grew them back there. I have wonderful pictures of us standing amongst pumpkins reaching past our knees, while we decided which ones to pick out. Then there is the spreading of newspaper, the sharpening of proper knives, with all kinds of cautions and dire threats about self-dismemberment. The first cut, the smell, the smooshing of pulp through our fingers. Separating the seeds from the goo for roasting later on, laughing at how our hands and fingernails had turned a lovely shade of, well, of pumpkin. Oh joy, what fun! The smell of candle wax and burnt tendrils of pumpkin entrails which were missed in the cleaning out. The donning of homemade costumes, pirate, vampyre, gypsy, ghost and others. May your day and evening be full of Bright Blessings, as well as tomorrow, All Souls Day! kat |
Subject: RE: TFTD- Merry Samhain/Halloween 31/10/02 From: CapriUni Date: 31 Oct 02 - 12:34 PM Thank you, Kat! And the same to you... Here is a Samhain (pronouced Sow-en, or their abouts) prose-poem I wrote for one of my ancestors this year. The details are personal, but the sentiment, I hope, is universal. And I send it out not only for my ancestors, but for all the loved ones we saw pass through the gate this year: Call Across Time's Gate By Ann Magill The dead are never gone. Their spirits, like drops of rain, fall all around us, seeping into the stuff of life as rain seeps into the earth: a coffee mug, a favorite shirt, the walls of rooms where beloved voices once echoed. It is Time, alone, that separates us, keeping "What Was" and "What Will Be" outside our lives, as surely as an iron door keeps out the creatures of the dark. But on this night, this Samhain night, the Gate of Time stands open. And so the spirits return, and ask for a seat at the table. Old family photos lie scattered around me like autumn leaves -- shadows of the living, now gone, frozen in time, images as faded and transparent as ghosts. And you, sweet Peter, Mother's little brother, are among them. She saw your face in mine, she said, heard your laugh in mine, and I, staring at one photo, see her face in yours -- just as it was when she was lost in thought, and didn't know that anybody saw. Yet, at that moment, when the camera clicked, you were the focus of all eyes, the very guest of honor. What thoughts were you lost in then, what fears, what hopes, and what regrets? You stand before a chalkboard, before a picture of your younger self. It's the only one with any date, as if those present tried to pin time down, and make it stay. And yet, in this image, time collapses upon itself, and disappears. I turn the photo over, and see my mother's hand -- hear her voice again, thick with grief and anger: "Send this one back." She didn't, though. She loved you too much to let you pass through Time's Gate unremembered. You passed through too soon. There was no one there to keep the demons at bay when the bullet ended your life on that Tijuana road leading south to the beach. She and Lincoln, newly wed, flew down when they got the call. They had planned to be apart, that week, but Death puts an end to all plans. They spent long days seeking answers, and found instead locked doors and chatter in a language they could not understand. Finally, wrapped in grief and love, your sister became my mother. Time wavers, and your image flickers in my mind like a shadow cast by a candle flame -- caught between the young man you were, and the old man you would have become, if only fate had taken a different turn. And yet, if it had, would I be here at all? I cannot say. Is anyone left on this side of the Gate to remember you? I cannot know. So I will do my best, for your sake, and for hers. So come, sweet uncle, on this night, and join the family circle: mothers, sisters, fathers -- all. Let us laugh, and sing, and speak of loves we share, before the Gate of Time closes for another year. |

Subject: RE: TFTD- Merry Samhain/Halloween 31/10/02 From: Micca Date: 31 Oct 02 - 01:17 PM CYCLE The night weeps gentle tears for the dying day leaves in mourning again the season of dying upon us almost without warning seems only yesterday it was flowers all the way promising a bright tomorrow in its sparkling April showers and now blackberries, in black, burying the year a breath at a time. Harvest moon and first frosts Octobers icy breath announces Funeral games for Samhain Christians "All Hallows" but its worth is known to ancient Celts burying the Sun like gold 'till Spring can summon it forth with Beltane fires. But now rain, punctuating the summer comma, colon: stop. Quiet and unrelenting at the edge of thought time, bleeding down the window, invites the eye back into the past. To dwell on how things were or might have, or might still, be. Resist diversion, Time is now, and now is all you have and rain is only rain, and Autumn glorious and real and here. Blessed be |

Subject: RE: TFTD- Merry Samhain/Halloween 31/10/02 From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 31 Oct 02 - 05:59 PM Passing out candy at the door between checking Mudcat threads and Mudchat, even as we speak. I love Halloween, too. I lived in New York City for four years... the first Halloween, I bought candy and popcorn balls and waited for the kids... I lived in an apartment building, and I saw kids in there all the time. Not a single kid came. I finally got fed up and went out on the street, and there were kids around, but none in costume. I told them that I had bought a lot of candy and popcorn balls and asked if they wanted any. They gave me a fishy look like I was a flasher, and said, "Got any money? New traditions. Ended up throwing the popcorn balls away. I'm sure that the cockroaches enjoyed them.. America.. Jerry |

Subject: RE: TFTD- Merry Samhain/Halloween 31/10/02 From: Peg Date: 01 Nov 02 - 12:46 AM I had a long day--taught 3 classes. Showed horror movies in two of 'em (Carrie and The Wicker Man) and the Australian film Proof in the third one, and now I am wiped out. I have had a headache since about 5:30 pm. Had a quiet glass of red wine with my two friends who live upstairs from me. They told me about the trick or treaters who stopped by today (our other neighbors from the second floor decorate the place to the nines for the neighborhood kids). Left a small goblet of wine and some English cheddar and biscuits for the fairy folk, and a candle for them to see by... Now I am off to bed. Here's to absent friends... Peg |
Subject: RE: TFTD- Merry Samhain/Halloween 31/10/02 From: open mike Date: 01 Nov 02 - 03:23 AM I love the talk of the nation link-thanks Kat! I did not have any trick or treaters- in a really remote rural place, so too far between houses. I did put on a gorilla mask and visit the neighbors. this year both of my parents died, and my mother's 85 birtday would have been next tuesx. so i am thinking of them and feeling like connecting with their spirits since this is the first halloween since their passing. I am hoping that the veil between' the worlds will be thin enough for some communication possibilities..... |

Subject: RE: TFTD- Merry Samhain/Halloween 31/10/02 From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 01 Nov 02 - 11:50 AM Oh yes... we had 84 kids and two dogs. That's right, two dogs. The streets were filled with families... mostly little kids with their parents and often, Grandparents, babies in strollers, and the family dogs on leashes. Two dogs were decked out with hats and capes. Even though they didn't come to the door, I think I'll pick up a box of dog biscuits for nest Halloween. Maybe I can find some in the shape of pumpkins. No kidding... Jerry |
Subject: RE: TFTD- Merry Samhain/Halloween 31/10/02 From: Peg Date: 01 Nov 02 - 11:59 AM awwwww, dogs in costume! that is so cute. My cats would never stand for that. Happy All Souls' Day, all; the energy should be in strong force through the new moon next Tuesday, so think on what you want to manifest this winter season... peg |
Subject: RE: TFTD- Merry Samhain/Halloween 31/10/02 From: Clinton Hammond Date: 01 Nov 02 - 03:37 PM We had a ton of kids, including some "Big Kids" from the rest home across the street... The best was a little guy, ( and I mean little... this dude still had his New Feet on...) who was dressed in a black and white bear costume, that was near exactly the same as a teddy bear from my childhood... had to run and grab it to show to his mom... Off to the gig where there were some few people in costume... but most weren't... the best costume was the bar owner dressed as Hagar The Horrible... though I don't envy him the task of washing the spray-on-red out of his beard... The costume parade came and went... the prizes were given out and the place cleared, so the band sat and chatted away the end of the night, and they cleared out early... me and my chummer tore down the sound system, put everything back in it's place, loaded up the Focus and had a night cap with the staff... A quick stop at Blockbuster on the way home to pick up our pre-purchased copies of Spiderman on DVD, and a rental copy of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and that was a night... Not the best of halloweens, but far far far from being the worst.... So, who's started thinking about their costume for next year already? I know we have! ,-) |
