Subject: RE: Eliza Carthy In Hull (UK) From: Leadfingers Date: 02 Nov 02 - 06:10 PM I hope all the English Trad people will go and support her.Sometimes I think she feels lonely as Eliza and her family are the only people keeping English music alive |
Subject: RE: Eliza Carthy In Hull (UK) From: Harry Basnett Date: 03 Nov 02 - 06:34 AM Hi, Leadfinger...has Eliza upset you at some stage? Scratched your car or kicked your puppy or something? I think we should be told.. I've never heard any of Waterson:Carthy refer to thremselves as the Saviours of English Traditional Music or anything similar...in fact, in the notes to their latest album martin actually states how sick and tired the family are to being referred to as "the first family of folk.." Do you have a problem with the English Tradition or is it just Eliza? All the best............Harry Basnett. |

Subject: RE: Eliza Carthy In Hull (UK) From: Leadfingers Date: 03 Nov 02 - 08:13 AM Harryoldham,Eliza was interviewed on the radio a while ago and that was the impression I got from what she said.I do not in any way try to belittle her undoubted talents nor those of her family,or the good work they do to promote English music.Maybe its the industry hype thats confusing us all. |
Subject: RE: Eliza Carthy In Hull (UK) From: Harry Basnett Date: 03 Nov 02 - 08:31 AM As I said on another thread, if the media wish to use the likes of the Carthy's and Kate Rusby as figureheads of English folk music then that's fine by me just as long as the music is promoted...Kate rusby was recently interviewed on Womans Hour and was criticised on a Mudcat thread for not going on about the general folk scene...she did however try to get her point across about the lack of media attention to folk music in this country. Recently we have had two hours devoted to Martin Carthy on television - - admittedly tucked away on BBC 4; the Kate Rusby interview on Radio 4 and we have the up-coming Eliza Carthy session on Andy Kershaw's programme this Friday. A couple of weeks ago Sandy Denny singing 'Fotheringay' was actually played on the Terry Wogan show on Radio 2...okay, it might be small beginnings but it gives hope of more to come...oh, yes..there was Linda Thompson on the Jools Holland programme but perhaps the less said about that the better! All the best.............Harry Basnett. |
