Ok, here goes

1    I used to be a grave digger

2    My mother worked on the Enigma project during WW2

3    I believe in Twillingsgate

4    I once blew up Thurston Binns (if thats not obscure what is!)

5    My cousin is an actor on TV, played the dopey bike mechanic Malcolm on TV programe "Watching" with Emma Wray and Lisa Tarbuck. Now in the TV cop thing set on Mersyside. (I have never met him but apparently we share many physical characteristics)

6    I have a PURRfect pedegree Persian Pussy called Sally who came from the alley at the back of my house one night and decided to stay.(Unfortunately she forgot to pack her pedegree papers!)

7    I once organised the entertainment at a party for 3000 people lasting 4 days in Scarborough UK.

8    I had a nervous breakdown later that year!! (But the party was great!!)

9    I play my fiddle better between my knees than I do with it under my chin.

10   I once gave up my seat in a pub in Chiswick, London, to Jack Warner (Sgt George Dixon of Dixon of Dock Green and Blue Lamp fame)((the gossip at the bar was that the woman he was with wasnt his wife, shock horror!!!)) (((Dont tell anyone I said that by the way)))

Hope most of them are sufficiently obscure but they are all true (alegidly)

11. I just re-read this whole thread.

12. Ditto most of the peanutbutter combinations... eaten not because of culinary reasons, but I was always hungry as a teenager. When I came home late at night, I'd make toast and milk... there used to be 24 slices in a loaf of bread... I know, because I'd eat a loaf at night, swallowed down with a gallon of milk. I weighed 135 pounds as was 6 foot 1, when I graduated from highscool..

I too have a famous cousin whom I have never met - Nick Barmby who has played football(soccer) for England and is currently with Leeds United. I have traced the Barmbies back to the East Coast near Bridlington in the 1500s and I assume that they came from Scandinavia - anyway they ended up in Hull and all over the East riding.

Well, here's a few from me...

1. I once bit into a custard cream biscuit (UK type of cookie) and found half a wasp. (I'd eaten the other half).

2. I was asked when I was 16 to get married by a fijian man I had been dancing with at a party in London. I could be living in a mud hut on his island by now - foool fooool foooool..... (I said no).

3. I Broke my little finger on my left hand in 3 places, dislocated it, put it back in alignment myself propped up by two lollipop sticks and carried on roller skating.

4. I once appeared in Song of Praise in Liverpool Cathedral, in my brownies outfit - all you could see was my bobble hat. Didn't last long in the brownies as I didn't like sitting in cold churches.

5. I can wiggle my nostrils

6. At the age of 11 I saved a 5 year old girl from drowning in a hotel pool in Florida.

7. At the age of 25 I stopped a young teenage girl from throwing herself off a very tall bridge in my town by talking to her. Which was just as traumatic for me as it was her and very scary.

8. My great grandma came over from Ireland landing in Liverpool with no english and surrounded in mystery.

9. I found a long lost third cousin on the internet who visited me and was the double of my great uncle.

10. I can't stand the sight of cockroaches - shiver!

Ella

Sir Roger--who is Matt Busby? I don't know and therefore am unable to dig it, dig it, etc.

I own a dictionary which does not list Monorchid. Fill in your own joke.

I once met a man from Latvia who had exactly the same 5 scars on his left hand as mine. It's hard to express how weird that seemed, how exactly they matched.

Fred

Matt Busby was the legendary manager of Manchester United (a world famous soccer club, for those who have been living in a cave sine the 1950s)who survived the Munich air crash that decimated the team in 1958 and re-built the team to eventually win the European Cup with a side that featured the best foorballer in the world ever - George Best.

21. A fact that will dramatically change my life that I didn't know about myself until today - I just came back from an allergist/immunologist exam. I had a sensitivity test done to determine allergic reactions. My entire life I have had sore throats and sinus problems and finally I couldn't tolerate the breathing problems any longer. I was once told by an MD that going to an allergist would be a waste of time and money so I put it off until now. Today I found out I am allergic to feathers. I've slept with my head sandwiched between two feather pillows for as long as I can remember. I used to keep a cage of parakeets in my bedroom. I also dust with a feather duster almost every day. God, if I had only known this before, what misery I could have avoided. If you have mysterious ongoing health problems, see an allergist.

Napolion was monorchid! So, is orchid another word for testicle? "Aren't those beautiful orchids" takes on a whole new meaning. I won't be able to see an orchid without giggling.

That will be obsure. Giggling, I mean.

Funny. I tend to think of my life as an open book, but if I think really hard (not easy these days), I can think of a few obscure facts.

Allan, I've told everyone in some thread or other about my days in "The Village".

Amos, I think everyone knows I'm coming out to live in California!

I hate roaches too! Yuch!

Oh, I will lose my job at the end of this month and I've stopped drinking. Well, I still have a glass of wine when I go out to dinner and a cold beer with a sandwich, but that's far and few between.

I'm not upset about losing my job. I see it as an opportunity to finally retire. I'll do real estate and I will have a new web site and I will sell on e-bay AND I will not get up out of bed until I want to.

What fun!

I'm sure theres more obsure stuff but I have to go to work right now.

SOON!

Love, Annamill

Going for 400...

1. My great grandmother was a fur trapper (and a mule-skinner).
2. My High School record in the half mile stood for over 12 years before being broken. (I can still walk briskly for short distances.)
3. Nearly ejected from class as a college freshman for arguing with the visiting Nobel Laureate (Dr Paul Samuelson), who used his own version of my arguments in testimony to the US Senate about a month later (without crediting me, I might add).
4. I was "blackballed into retirement" for refusing to follow my boss's written order to commit a felony.
5. Appeared on television 3 times before my family owned a TV.
6. Never made it to the Met, but did get to play sax in a concert at the Brooklyn Art Museum back in '59.
7. I saw the movie "Strategic Air Command" 138 times (the summer I was a theater usher - it ran the entire summer).
8. When I was about nine, I could pluck, gut, clean, and cut up a chicken in under 3 minutes. (Granddad raised them, and one fall weekend a half-dozen of us would put 350 or so in the freezer.)
9. I hand-built the ultimate tub double-base several years ago. It's been to festivals in at least 3 states by now.
10. Once invited by unknown person to help him "loosen up" while I was standing around watching my (college) dorm's intramural wrestling(?) squad work out. Went nearly 45 minutes with him before he volunteered that - besides being about 45 pounds over my weight - he was on his way to Olympic Trials. Never got his name. He commented favorably on my "moves" and unfavorably on my lack of enough muscle to make use of them.
11. I am noted for brevity and incisive wit (you said obscure, and a lot of people don't notice that one).

John

Alanww,  A Campaign for Real Ale?  Sounds like a worthy cause!  Tell us more.

Miken ("Janis Joplin once vomited on my feet at a party.")  Now that's something to include in your autobiography!

Ella, (6. At the age of 11 I saved a 5 year old girl from drowning in a hotel pool in Florida.
7. At the age of 25 I stopped a young teenage girl from throwing herself off a very tall bridge in my town by talking to her.)
I'd hardly call those "obscure" facts about you.  At least not at all trivial!  Good on ya!

Annamill, are you coming to the San Diego area?

Hey, here's a thought.  Can folks put a link (links) to their posts in this thread into their Profile on the Mudcat Profiles page?  Might be more interesting than the where-I'm-from-and-how-I-make-a-living info.

* I once worked for the nephew of Gordon of Khartoum

* My Great-grandfather (Joesph Smith) was in the founding team of Arsenal Football Team and actually got his work mates to chip in 6d each towards it.

* His brother-in-law (my GggUncle)Charlie Williams - was apocrypcally the first and only goalkeeper to score a goal (from one end of the pitch to the other) before the FA made it illegal.

* I can move my eyes in two different directions at once.

* I decided (wrongly) to get married after being charged and chased by a herd of aggressive African elephants .. in Africa BTW!

* My other GF baked Prince Charles' Christening Cake and the Queen's engagement cake.

* I probably have the biggest appendix scar ever in the World (that was going to be "minute and below my bikini line" according to the surgeon.

* I always want to drink a glass of milk after eating mincemeat pies at Christmas

* My Grandfather and I shared exactly the same taste in degrees and time scale of decaying cheese

* I gave birth to my son on 3/11/89 on a carpet that I subsequently gave to Trevor Crozier, folk musician, who's birthday is also the 3 October.

Genie...

I just happened to be in the exact spot at the time someone needed help. On both cases no one else had known it happened. With the little girl, she was on her own in the pool and got into difficulties, and she was so terrified her parents would go mad with her we decided we wouldn't tell, as long as she didn't go in the pool on her own again.

With the teenage girl, it was late in the eve, and not many people about, just me and another person saw her. She was so embarassed and once again scared her parents would find out, that once we'd talked to her, and reasoned with her. She came to the decision she didn't want to do it anyways. So we just took her home and she was ok.

It tends to be quite often I get into these situations, somehow it just happens. Last winter I was travelling on a road at 1am, no other car, when BAM a car came wizzing from the other direction and crashed itself into the barrier.

I don't know why - but I seem to be around these things when they happen. I'd actually prefer not to be as I get pretty shaken up each time. I think alot of it is because I'm usually travelling home late in the eve or the early hours of the morning after gigs and sessions and well, that's when alot of these things happen.

Here's some more...

11. My grandfather had harmonica lessons with Larry Hagler

12. I'm learning Welsh at the moment. (Dw i'n dysgu Cymraeg)

13. As well as roaches, slugs come near the top of my hate bug list

2. I shot a house cat when I was ten, while training cougar hounds with my father. (..........sorry..........)
3. Not surprisingly, apparently my first words as a baby were not "Mama" and "Dada" but "pardon me" when I was being burped
4. I can dredge up more facts from my head about microscopic worms than most people would care to know.
5. In Grade 9, I was expelled from school for wearing mascara.
6. I breastfed my first child for two and a half years.
7. Brownie McGee accused me of wearing shoe polish for perfume.
8. In Grade 6, I raised my hand in class and asked the teacher if I could be excused so that I could go home to let the budgie out of the refridgerator.    She let me.
9. I installed a 200 Amp service and did all the electrical wiring for our house.
10. I pierced my brother's ear when he was young using a potato and a sewing needle sterilized in candle.

Hi Genie.
CAMRA is a consumer pressure group established in the 1970s when all the big breweries were buying up and closing down the small ones and were pushing pasturised gassy beer on us rather than wanting to take the trouble of letting the beer mature naturally in the barrel (its not so gassy then!). Its been very successful but there are still many battles to fight such as ensuring the pubs get back the right to not be tied to having to take beer from only one (big) brewery. Many are independent but unfortunately most are not.

"Come landlord fill the flowing bowl ...!" Hicc!!

Why can't i stay away from this thread? It's ridiculous on a dialup connection.

Worse yet, having gotten it all loaded I don't feel right about not posting to it.

I saw the Rolling Stones in Toronto, during the tour that Rolling Stone magazine assured its readers, would be their last ever. In the same sentence the writer pronounced that Dylan would never tour again.

The year was 1975. If you're going to be wrong, be REALLY wrong.

I have been living in a cave since the 1950's. (Thanks Sir Roger, now I can dig it.)

I find appendix scars attractive, ever since my Russian hippie babysitter showed us hers, causing a 15 minute puberty, comparable to spontaneous combustion, or the Lon Chaney Jr. werewolf transformation. She asked me if I needed an aspirin.

Junior Wells once stopped by to see my father-in-law, who wasn't home. My wife was a child but tried to mix him some sort of drink,   and he was merrily dancing with her and her sisters in their basement when my wife's grandmother arrived and was scandalised.

The only stitches I've ever had were in the orchids area, near the peonies.

Metchosin, hats off to you! We have much in common. Sad to have to make the point, but it shouldn't be unusual to nurse your children that long (it's not like you're the only source of nutrition that whole time!). It was the same with me and my two children. Love the story about the budgie, and I'm in awe of the electrical wiring! I'm tackling rerouting and wiring the television cable and telephone wires, but I haven't tried the electrical system. I need a fan installed, and would do it myself but for figuring out where the juice would connect (it'll be a new outlet, not replacing something in that part of the ceiling already) and installing the switches. . .

Anyway, nice to read your list! And Ella, I have a number of first aid stories that your list reminds me of. I was a member of a Mountain Rescue team, for those occasions when rescue and first aid were necessary for people in the mountains where technical skills were required to reach them. More than once, on my own hiking, I came across individuals who weren't going to make it out of their hike on their own. For example, on the trail from Kennedy Hot Springs that comes down from the Pacific Crest Trail I one time talked total strangers into carrying the backpack and gear for a fellow suffering from disorientation and dehydration and other health problems. I stayed with him and slowly walked him out, practically force-feeding him water along the way. When we reached the trailhead a couple of hours later everything was there and others in the parking lot were able to help him with salty food, etc. I'm afraid if I'd just walked past him, I'd have been called out later anyway, with the entire group, so we could carry him out. The only disadvantage to this kind of good deed is that my employer (the Forest Service) didn't pay me the overtime for the day because no official call for help had been issued.

maybe even more in common than you might think SRS and actually for the first seven or eight months I was her only source of food, although I think at the time, my nursing became extended not because of any health or comfort benefits for my child, but because for a long while, nobody explained to me me how to actually stop.

I did work as a Park Naturalist for a couple of years. However the only ropes I came close to using then, would have been in order to garotte small boys who insisted on jumping up and down on chum salmon carcasses so they could watch the eggs pop out. Never actually show children how salmon reproduce. I also recall spending an inordinate amount of time demonstrating the trick of getting bananna slug slime off your hands.

True--at first they're dedicated nursers. I never used babyfood with my two, as they watched us eat they wanted to try it, so I cut or ground up a lot of stuff and fed them that way. No acclimation from jars of baby food. Ugg! They say that kissing might be an offshoot of an activity where mothers chewed up food then pushed it into baby's mouths. That would be BG--Before Gerber. :-)

Looks like Deckman was right--I missed a few of my own obscure facts. (Like knowing that one can remove slug slime from the bottom of one's feet with hot water, soap, and a Dobie pad).

ooh, never, never put water on slug slime, it just exacerbates the problem, just rub it with dry hands and it rolls off like little dry snot balls. It also leaves your hands and feet amazingly clean and stain free.

I think I always enjoyed the challenge of scrubbing it off. I never tried a dry removal method. Scrubbing of slug slime also gave me a nice opportunity to (with hot water and the nylon scrubber) grind off callouses. ;-)

Say, maybe they use something like slug slime to help Moleskin stick so well to feet? Ha!

Just keeping the thread simmering, in case somebody wants to post message number 400 ...

15. An uncle, on my father's side of the family, was once a magistrate (in Gateshead, North-East England). I haven't spoken to him for many years, now. Partly, we have all drifted away, and I like to think that we "black sheep" of our families, have some principles to uphold [tongue firmly in cheek].
16. Another uncle, on my mother's side this time, emigrated to Australia and died there a few years ago.
17. I recently achieved a long-held ambition, and played guitar along with "Guitar George" Borowski, all right, a mere half dozen chords before somebody snatched it off me, at a friend's "house-microwaving" party (she got the house after a contested divorce, this was its "re-warming"); but it still counts, in my book.
18. I once travelled thirty miles in a coffin. (My little brother owned a BSA C11 motorcycle, at one time. It had a sidecar, the body of which had rusted away, and been replaced with a plywood coffin.)

Deceased animals- Diamond (in the rough), Topaz, Jet, Jasper.
12. I sang to Shawn Phillips on his stage while he was tearing down from a show. I was more than half drunk on tequila. He autographed all my old album covers and said he would come to play at my place for $1,500.00. (He is now a fireman down in Texas)
13. (This is the last one I will post to this, I swear it is!) I played harp for Jonny Lang when he was just starting out. I think he was about 14, at a tavern in Northern MN. Then I pissed him off when I told him I had always wanted a virgin.(he claimed he wasn't one)
what post number are we at now?
Peace, Rustic

in response to Fred Miller WAY back up there..(I had not read the rest until tonight)

"Bill D, the greatest per capita concentration of unusually attractive people seems to me to be in Lawrence KS. What's going on there?"

well, Lawrence is a bit like Fort Collins, Colorado(where the coeds I saw nearly made me step on my tongue)...it is a college town, and LOTS of attractive young folk are about...other than that, I can't say....(Now in Omaha, they all seemed to be farm girls and WELL fed on corn....)

Oops, Genie! I lost track of this thread and didn't see your question until just now.

I was a wildlife rehabilitation worker and after that, a zookeeper back in the 1970s. With species like raccoons that were native to the areas where I was living, I would take in orphaned babies, raise them, and then release them when they reached maturity.

The idea was to try to imitate the way a mother raccoon would raise her young as much as possible. So what the babies were telling me was that they were hungry or scared or just checking to make sure I was nearby, or whatever, and I would use the sounds a mother raccoon would make to communicate things like "get over here", or "everything's ok", or "Danger!", etc.

;-)

I can verify what Celtic Soul has said about her age, but only as a probibility. We found her in the cabbage patch (I think the Stork brought her or something), so we're not exactly certain.
