Subject: Tune Add: La Espero (Esperanto movement anthem)
From: Haruo
Date: 11 Nov 02 - 09:08 PM

"La Espero" is the nonnational anthem of the Esperanto movement, formally played at our world congresses etc. If Esperantism had its own Olympic laureates, it would be played at the medal ceremonies. The tune normally used, which I think has been virtually universal since maybe 1920, is by Félicien Menu de Ménil:

Prior to the universal adoption of this rather jauntily militaristic-sounding tune, however, there were other tunes in use, of which I think the best and earliest (1891, I think) was by a Swede named Cl. Adelsköld ("La Espero"):

Another "patriotic" or "religious" Esperanto hymn tune is "Preĝo", composed for Zamenhof's "Prayer beneath the green banner": (Esperanto | English)

I'd be interested in hearing of other tunes to the same meter.

The "La Espero" link has the lyrics. Is there an English translation?

I've never seen a singable English version of La Espero. Somewhere on the Web there's a version posted by a Spaniard with an insufficient command of English to make it work. Can't find it now, though I did just locate by Google this unsingable (and well-nigh incomprehensible, if you ask me) version of the first stanza from a Dutch source:

A new feeling entered the world
Through the world a loud cry sounds
May it now with wings on an easy wind
Fly from place to place
Not towards a bloodthirsty sword
It drags the human family
Nevertheless, it promises a sacred harmony
To the eternally war-waging world

I just added a third tune for La Espero, this one by Achille Motteau (whom I had previously known mainly as the author of an early version of Auld Lang Syne (beginning Malnovajn gekonatojn or Pasintajn gekonatojn); the best such version is Reto Rossetti's La Iamo Longe For (in the left column; Motteau's is on the right).
