Subject: Lyr Add: PRETTY CROWIN' CHICKENS From: masato sakurai Date: 12 Nov 02 - 11:20 AM It's a "Grey Cock" (Child #248) version. The last stanza is posted at this thread: Penguin: The Grey Cock. PRETTY CROWIN' CHICKENS (Hattie Hicks Presnell, 1951) The moon it shines bright, and the stars they give light, While this fair miss she worries alone. There's something in the way that is causing him to stay, It's I am worried alone, 'lone, 'lone, It's I am worried alone. Her true love come at last, and he come very fast, Come tripplin' through the plain. This fair miss she rose, and she threw on her clothes, For to let her old true lover in, in, in, For to let her old true lover in. "My pretty little chicken, my pretty crowin' chicken, Say, don't you crow before day. I'll make your wings of a yeller beading gold, And your comb of the silver so gay, gay, gay, And your comb of the silver so gay." This chicken proved false-hearted to her, And crowed one hour too soon. She sent her love away, before it was day, And he traveled by the light of the moon, moon, moon, And he traveled by the light of the moon. She saddled up her milk white horse, And also her dapple grey. She rode through the dark wilderness, At the length of a long summer day, day, day, At the length of a long summer day. "My old true love, my sweet turtledove, Oh, when shall I see you again?" "When the moon and the stars enters in yonders green, And the sky, it shall shed no more rain, rain, rain, And the sky, it shall shed no more rain." Subject: Lyr Add: PRETTY CROWING CHICKEN (Frank Proffitt) From: GUEST,Brendan Davis Date: 18 Jul 11 - 02:46 PM Here is Frank Proffitt's version. I don't know if Hattie wrote this song or if it is is older. Many of these songs originally came from Sam Hicks and he passed them down to his children. PRETTY CROWING CHICKEN Oh, the moon shines bright, and the stars they give light, While this fair miss she worries alone. There's somethin' in the way that causes him to stay, While this fair miss she worries alone, 'lone, 'lone, While this fair miss she worries alone. Her old true love come at last; he come very fast, Come a-tripplin' through the plains. The fair miss arose; she drew on her clothes, For to welcome her old true lover in, in, in, For to welcome her old true lover in. "My pretty little chicken, my pretty crowin' chicken, Don't you crow before day. I'll make you the wings of the beaten yellow gold, And your comb of the silver so gay, gay, gay, And your comb of the silver so gay." This chicken proved falsehearted, And crowed one hour too soon. She sent her lover away, before it had come day, And he traveled by the light of the moon, moon, moon, And he traveled by the light of the moon. She saddled up her milk-white steed, On the tow her dapple grey. And she rode through the dark wilderness, At the end of a long summer day, day, day, At the end of a long summer day. "My old true love, my sweet turtledove, When shall I see you again?" "When the moon and the stars enter in yonder stream, And the sky shall shed no more rain, rain, rain, And the sky shall shed no more rain." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: My Pretty Crowing Chickens From: Rumncoke Date: 19 Jul 11 - 12:30 PM A crowing chicken? Must be written by someone unfamiliar with the ways of poultry. The chicken she goes tuck tuck tuck. The cock he goes uck a ooo. Anne Croucher |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: My Pretty Crowing Chickens From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 19 Jul 11 - 01:00 PM I don't think so, Anne. The hen goes cluck cluck. The chick goes peep peep. The rooster (or cock) goes cock-a-doodle-doo. But they are all chickens. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: My Pretty Crowing Chickens From: GUEST,Arkansas Red-Ozark Troubadour Date: 25 May 13 - 02:29 PM Well, is it really that important that the "false-hearted" chicken said, "cock-a-doodle-doo" or sent a text message? The idea is still there that it warned the lovers too soon. Great story. Frank Proffitt's version is the best I've heard. No fancy chords or fancy arrangements. Just "salt of the earth" pickin' and singin'. Makes me hungry for fried chicken, biscuits and gravy. |
