I havn't even tried to sing since the Getaway, until last evening. Got together with an old friend, and we made music all evening. I was able to sing half a dozen songs, and my friend said "WOW! Your voice is awsome! I love it."
Looks like it is going to be permanently lower than it was; I used to sing "Arbutus" in "A", and I now do it in "F".

Sounds mighty encouraging, Cap'n. You might see your range shifting higher as you get the throat muscles back in shape. They are probably very relaxed now, giving the lower range. Should be interesting to hear what happens. All the best.

Kendall, I am glad it's coming back. I'm glad you were quiet for a while and gave the irritation a chance to calm down - I didn't think you could keep it up very long! The quietness, that is.

Your vocal chords may be permanently thickened and voice lower or you might still have some irritation. If permanent - well, your friend sure sounds like he enjoyed the new voice!

Lemme see - the next time I'm likely to hear you is...urp - Old Songs??!! Maybe I'll make it to the Shanty Swap in Portland. Haven't decided yet. Are you going? If so, I might commit and I'll warm up the fiddle for back-up. Faded Roses and Loreena and...and if you now do those in E or some equally silly key, I'll see what I can do to make your voice higher! (What key are you singing Faded Roses in now?)

Thanks folks. This is such a relief. It's been a whole year since I lost my voice. Funny thing, the progress was slow until I caught cold at the Getaway, then since that cleared up healing has speeded up to the point where I am happy with the improvement.
Jeri, I will be at the shanty sing. I'm now doing Loreena and the Faded Roses in "F", but, I think I have enough flexibility to do them in "G".

By the way, what did you have in mind to "Get me to sing higher"? In any case, I'd love to have you help me on those songs.

That's great news!

The deepening of the voice might just happen anyway. I've noticed in recent years that most of the keys I used to sing in seem a bit too high for me now, but I've developed a couple of good notes on the bottom that I could only growl before. The only problem is that I have to change a lot of my guitar accompaniments.

Those are great news, Kendall. After all, when I try some "grand tenor" aria just for amusement, I bring it down a full tone and nobody notices as long as I keep a light timbre and don't try to play the "macho". But if your voice is deep enough, why not taking advantage of a new range, more warm and obscure, which could open a full new world of expression ?

At this point, I intend to visit Utah Phillips in the spring, and, if I'm going to travel that far, I will want to visit some Mudcatters too.

Warm and Fuzzies:

Kendall sang at the Side Door Cafe last night in Brunswick and was warmly greeted and applauded. He perfomed two songs perfectly and chose not to do a third although he was invited to. His voice is in better shape than his fingers. Practice! Practice! Practice!

One young man who runs the sound system for the cafe played on his "new" old Epiphone (Epiphany!...joke). He rambled a bit before he played about how it may not seem appropriate to play what he was about to play but he didn't know that a friend would be there tonight, etc. In short, he dedicated his performance of a blues/rock number to Kendall whom he obviously admired - another Kendall groupie. Later he asked me if he had embarrassed Kendall because he didn't have something more "folkie" prepared. The respect and admiration was touching.

There were of course the usual number of women young and old checking the old guy out. Sorry, Joe. If we can figure a way to bottle it, we could have the next hula hoop. And a lot of friends who were just glad to have him back and healthy. On the whole a very satisfactory "coming out party".

I am of course glad Kendall's well and back, but he already knew that so I've just been reading along.....and, uh.........Well look, I really need to make a buck and I'm fascinated with the concept of bottling Kendall.

I think what's required here is to start witha list of ingredients, proportionate quantities, fermenting times....that sort of thing.............Hmmmmmm..........First and fivemost (I've already conquered foremost so I'm on to bigger things) we need to decide on the overall ambience (read:flavor) we're looking for. I mean I don't see kendall as a fizzy soft drink nor do I see him as any sweet wine....perhaps something on the dry side with a touch of sweet aftertaste.

But wines don't have enough fire to them, ya' know? Hmmmm......I can't see a Bourbon as Kendall although there is some potential in Brandy.......maybe a liqueur..........I dunno'....too artsy-fartsy............My brains heating up. Anyone got any ideas that would help? I'm gonna' turn on my floor model Gordon Bok Fan and see if I can cool down a bit.............

Good things are still happening, still getting support messages from all over. Met with Gordon Bok today and discussed future performances together.
Later on, I got a phone call from one of my heros, Tommy Makem, checking to see how I'm doing.
It still amazes me to know how many friends I have.

I'm so damn lucky, and grateful to be getting mine back. We are both blessed with great friends; This Mudcat community has been a source of priceless support and healing for me.
