Let's drink to your coffin.
May it be made of the wood of a 100-year-old oak.
And may ye plant the tree tomorrow.

My father used the following, called An Irishman's toast to an Englishman"
" Here's to you, as good as you are; and here's to me, as bad as I am. But as good as you are, and as bad as I am - I'm as good as you are as bad as I am"

This is a bit of a Gaelic tongue twister

Na bac le mac an bhacaigh is ni bhacfaidh mac an bhacaigh leat.

Pronounced :
Naw bock leh mock an wockie iss knee bockie mock on vockie lath

Don't trouble trouble and trouble will not trouble you.

Bacach is literally the lame man or the beggar. Mac an bhacaigh is the beggar's son.

or try

Sliocht sleachta ar shliocht bhur shleachta (basically may your family live for many generations) - don't try this one at home, at least not with drink taken.

Driving round the roads of the Vale of Avoca, when I was about 12- not me driving you understand- my dad asked the way to the meeting of the waters, and the chap we asked said " well now if I were you I wouldnt have started from here" I'm sure I really do remember it.

My father constantly used the expression."what Paddy shot at". The context was ..what did you get..What Paddy shot at...meaning nothing. Has anyone else ever heard this expression. I have always been curious as to its' origins.

I don't know if it's really Irish, but I always liked how the SF writer Ray Bradbury has one of his characters reply to an offensive tourist:
Tourist: "The top of the morning to you"
Surly native: "The backside of somethin'er other ta you"
Blessings,
Barbara

Big Mick's are both French, too...

My favorite was a toast I saw somewhere on a plank
"May all your foes be your friends, and if they aren't your friends, may God turn their hearts, and if He don't turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles, so you'll know them by their limping."

I always liked "He's enough to give an aspirin a headache"....and my grandma always said of, well, me usually,"She was vaccinated with a gramaphone needle".I must know loads of them but because they are part of everyday conversation, it's hard to call them to mind.

"May the road rise before you and the wind be at your back"

or " before I disagree with a man I like to walk a mile in his shoes.
that way, if he gets angry, he is a mile away and barefoot" OK the last one isn't traditional irish but I like it.Cllr

From an Irish Flute player many years ago; about age "May you never die till the skin of a gooseberry makes a nightcap for ye"
:and - "May you never die till I kill ye".

Breaks me to bits even now .... and this guy could pulay as well.. even if nobody in those days had the slightest idea what Irish Trad was, but they sure liked to kick the floor to it.

Here is an online archive of Irish proverbs which also has downloadable .wavs of native speakers saying them, for those of us who don't know Irish by sight.

It was on that page that I found this saying:

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.
A friend's eye is a good mirror.

Working in Ireland about 20 years ago I hears the expression "Yer man has a neck like a jockey's bollocks" use in a meeting.

Checking up later I discovered that it meant he wqs "thick-skinned"

"If the world made sense, men would ride sidesaddle." ;-)

WHAT SHALL I SAY ABOUT THE IRISH??

THE UTTERLY IMPRACTICAL,NEVER PREDICTABLE,SOMETIMES IRASCIBLE,QUITE INEXPLICABLE,IRISH. STRANGE BLEND OF SHYNESS,PRIDE,AND CONCEIT,AND STUBBORN REFUSAL TO BOW IN DEFEAT. HE'S SPOILING AND READY TO ARGUE AND FIGHT,YET THE SMILE OF A CHILD FILLS HIS SOUL WITH DELIGHT. HIS EYES ARE THE QUICKEST TO WELL UP WITH TEARS,YET HIS STRENGTH IS THE STRONGEST TO BANISH YOUR FEARS. HIS HATE IS AS FIERCE AS HIS DEVOTION IS GRAND, AND THERE IS NO MIDDLE GROUND ON WHICH HE WILL STAND. HE'S WILD,AND HE'S HUMBLE,HE'S HAPPY AND SAD.HE'S IN LOVE WITH THE OCEAN, THE EARTH,AND THE SKIES,HE'S ENAMOURED WITH BEAUTY WHEREVER IT LIES. HE'S VICTOR AND VICTIM,A STAR AND A CLOD,BUT MOST OF ALL HE'S IRISH,
IN LOVE WITH HIS GOD!!
-------------------------
ST.PATRICK WAS A GENTLEMAN, WHO THROUGH STRATEGY AND STEALTH, DROVE ALL THE SNAKES OUT OF IRELAND,HERE'S A TOAST TO HIS HEALTH-BUT NOT TO MANY TOASTINGS OR YOU WILL LOSE YOURSELF AND FORGET THE GOOD ST.PATRICK-AND SEE ALL THOSE SNAKES AGAIN!!
----------------------------
MAY GOD GIVE YOU MANY YEARS TO LIVE, FOR SURE HE MUST BE KNOWING, THE EARTH HAS ANGELS ALL TO FEW AND HEAVEN TO OVERFLOWING!!!!
----------------------------
IN PRAISE OF STRONG WHISKEY-"IT FELT LIKE A TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION GOING DOWN MY THROAT!!!
-----------------------------
DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND WEEP-I AM NOT THERE...I DO NOT SLEEP.
I AM THE THOUSAND WINDS THAT BLOW...
I AM THE DIAMOND GLINTS ON SNOW...
I AM THE SUNLIGHT ON RIPENED GRAIN...
I AM THE GENTLE AUTUMN RAIN...
WHEN YOU WAKEN IN THE MORNING'S HUSH, I AM THE SWIFT UPLIFTING RUSH OF THE GENTLE BIRD'S CICLING FLIGHT...
I AM THE SOFT STAR THAT SHINES AT NIGHT...
DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND CRY-
I AM NOT THERE...I DID NOT DIE...

GOD BLESS ALL!!-
LOVE-WILD IRISH ROSE

Warning: Going to stretch the Category to the breaking point, here. (But, why change now? :) -

Definitional: Irish diplomacy: the ability to tell a man to go to Hell in such a way that he enjoys the trip.

Geographic: County Mayo, God help us.

Family -
Ecclesiastical: "There's no delayin' the priesht!" - my grandmother McNamara, setting off for Sunday Mass in a blizzard.
Responsorial: "Balls to you, Mrs. Murphy." - grandfather McN.
Haberdashiell: "I had a Hat when I came in and by God I'll have a Hat when I go out." - no idea derivation nor deep meaning, but always liked it.

Literary: "The seals are great family people, always were." - Myles na gCopaleen

Folkmusical:
"And I sang like the lark in the morning"
"Oh God bless England is our prayer"
