Can you remember any fragments from the song? Tunes are often misleading. The Child Ballad Fair Annie and Sweet Willie is about the wedding of an Annie.

Guest seems to think this is a tune, so I went on that basis.

I haven't ever heard of it before. Must be Ontario or Quebec

Heard a version of the song in a jam in Maine a few weeks back. A singer from New Brunswick introduced it from a Nova Scotia writer but I'm lost for the name. I can't make contact with the singer as his email is a dud. It seems it won some sort of regional song contest a few years back. The story was to do with a maiden her mother and a sailor who wants to marry her.

I'm the quest. Sorry I didn't leave my contact in the initial post. Thanks for the help.

Ike

Bonny Woodhall features the line "I would wed with my Annie". The words are in the Forum if you do a search. This is Scottish and not Canadian. Annie and Willie are two of the most common names in folk songs and he seems to ask him to marry her in a lot of them as well, so there area lot of candidates.

Subject: Lyr Add: ANNIE'S PROMISE
From: Songsmith
Date: 20 Nov 02 - 08:51 AM

Hello Ike,

I think this is what your looking for. I'd also bet the singer was a tall burley fisherman from Campobello named Gary.

"ANNIE'S PROMISE"

Here's a song of Anne Cleary and William O'Neil
A song of the ocean of the power it yields
A song of young lovers of love lost to the sea
A song of the promise young Annie believed.

Now young Annie Cleary lived down on the strand
And many a sailor had asked for her hand
But Annie's mother denied them saying Annie please see
The love of a sailor is his love of the sea.

Young William O'Niel was a sailor by trade
And one fine morning to the strand he came
And he met Annie Cleary as she strolled on the pier
He knew he must have her so he promised her there.

Chours
If you'll marry me Annie if you'll be my bride
If you'll marry me Annie I'll stay by your side
I promise I'll love you I'll stay on the strand
I promise you Annie if you'll give me your hand.

If I married you William if I gave you my hand
If I married you William denying mother's command
Would you swear to me William this promise you'll keep
That I'll never lose you to that briny sea.

And so a wedding oh a wedding so grand
And so a wedding denying mother's command
As the mother cries Annie I pray the cruel cruel sea
Won't take your William like your Father from me.

But a year had past since Annie's promise was made
Half as long since William has been lost to his trade
And the mother holds Annie as young Annie she weeps
For her broken promise her love lost to the sea.

Chours

Young Annie O'Neil lives down on the strand
She has a young daughter she takes by the hand
Annie shows her the ocean warns of the power it holds
She warns her of sailors and of their promises bold

You are enclosing it in angle brackets, which causes it to be interpreted as an html tag which is not displayed. Never use angle brackets for punctuation in an html page!

You beat me to it, Songsmith. It's a great song with a beautiful chorus. When I picked it up from Gary (the burly guy from Campobello) last February, he dictated it to me, beginning: "Here's the song of Anne Cleary."

"Okay," I said, "I'm ready."

"Here's the song of Anne Cleary."

"Yup, go for it."

"Here's the song of Anne Cleary."

And it finally dawned on me that that is the first line.

The songs ends on the line "I promise you Annie," repeated three times, without the second half of the line. It's very powerful.

Dan

Hello Dan,

I can relate to your post. Gary and I talked about the evening in mention where he sang the song in Maine. I understood it was some time ago however so perhaps he's returned to the jam location again. I hope he has as he's a jam junkie to say the least.I was thrilled to have a person in here looking for one of my songs.

Gary and his wife Mary are treasures as are the others on the island like R Fitch and Faye. Those folks are second to none and made me feel so welcome during my time there.

Gary also writes and I love his material. The times oh the times with gary and Fitch. The Campobello clan all head to Canso for the Stan Rogers festival each year. It's a time I look forward to each year. You always know when you've made a great friend when you pick up where you left off as soon as you have the chance to get together again regardless of how much time has passed.

I'm so happy Gary has learned the song and helps share my music with others. If you see him please send my warmest regards and ask him if he's ever found a lobster in his guitar case. He may have a few pictures to show and great tales to share.

Thanks,
Jim Hanlon

Jim,

I hadn't realized it was you. Gary was singing several of your songs last February (hopefully he'll be back again this year), and all of them were excellent. Please let us know if and when you have a recording.

In the meantime, I've been enjoying singing "Annie's Promise" for the last eight months (with proper attribution, of course). Thanks for the beautiful songwriting.

Dan

Hello Dan,

Thanks for the kind words. I started a new project with Paul Mills in july. Annie's Promise is included. I don't think we'll get it finished this year. Time will tell. I'll give Gary a box of CDs when it is finished. He'll get one to you.

Thanks again.

Jim
