Two years ago, I subscribed to "The Old-time Herald." Are there other periodicals like the "Herald?" I'm considering "Sing Out" too.

Other monthly periodicals are: Banjo Newsletter (great if you like banjo) has some articles mostly just banjo TAB's)

There are several bluegrass publications including 'Bluegrass Unlimited' which I occasionally publish articles.

Lots of guitar magazines: I get "Fingerstyle Guitar" or 'Acoustic Guitar.'

Although UK based, rather smaller and with more local interest than tab etc. there is the "Old Time News", quarterly magazine of FOAOTMAD (Friends of American Old Time Music and Dance). Members are mainly but not entirely from the UK.

For more information check out

FOAOTMAD

Thanks for the link nickp. I'd love to visit your festival sometime. The Shivers would like to travel over in 2003 to visit Micca and all our UK friends, maybe February is possible. Where is your festival held, and what's the weather like in February? best regards, Chance.

Hi Fortunato

This gives me an opportunity for a shameless bit of advertising....

Our next festival (weekend of 21 to 23 Feb 2003) features Dan Levenson's band (The Hippie Billies), the Reed Island Rounders and Rayna Gellert amongst others from the US and some UK input too.

Gainsborough (pronounced Gainsboro as you might guess) is 140 miles north of London, 30 miles east of Sheffield, 60 miles east of Manchester, 20 miles northwest of Lincoln and 40 miles southwest of Hull (and the less said about that the better!). All distances approximate but should help pinpoint it on a map.

Ticket price - on the assumption that you must be from the States works out at about $56 (£35).

Any further questions feel free to email me from the link on the web page.

Nick

Wilco48,
I get the Old Time Herald also. You didn't mention what you like about it in particular, so I'm not sure what I'm recommending here. For myself, I especially like that the articles are often very in-depth, more so than in some other magazines.

If you're interested in fiddle music, Fiddler magazine is another good one. Also non-slick, with interesting articles. I do play fiddle, but I think there's quite a bit of "general interest" material in there as well. Here's a link to check it online.

Fiddler Magazine

For general interest, I would definitely go with Sing Out!. There's so much in there, that no matter what your current interests, you're sure to find a lot there. And it's great for discovering new performers, songs, in fact entire genres of music as well.
Zhenya
