Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Mark Cohen Date: 23 Nov 02 - 10:15 PM Thanks, Haruo, for starting a thread all those cricketers will be scratching their heads at! Good luck in the stretch! Aloha, Mark (ex-Seattleite) |

Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Haruo Date: 23 Nov 02 - 10:26 PM Actually, I won't mind if the Cougars win the National Championship, but it sure was nice to force 'em into OT. Haruo |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Bobert Date: 23 Nov 02 - 10:29 PM Danged, I thought baseball season just ended.... Geeeeze.... Bobert |
Subject: BS: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Haruo Date: 23 Nov 02 - 10:30 PM Sorry to have left off the "BS" designation; I was all excited and in a hurry to get back to the game. But I would indeed be interested in knowing of any pertinent songs (aside from Bow Down to Washington, of course). Haruo |
Subject: BS: 23-23 in OT From: Haruo Date: 23 Nov 02 - 10:37 PM So catspaw, if the Cougs have to make do with the Rose Bowl (the only Bowl that counts where I come from), who do you face in the Fiesta? Haruo (shows how much I follow foreign [i.e. non-deutero-Washingtonian] sports!) |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Haruo Date: 23 Nov 02 - 10:57 PM 29 - 26 Final! We did it! Haruo who only took two courses at the U Dub and didn't complete either one (Norwegian by Correspondence and First Quarter Hindi) |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: catspaw49 Date: 23 Nov 02 - 11:11 PM A lot of us here still hate the Bowl Championship Series as well and we have played the Rose bowl as the Big 10 rep many times. Sadly now, whichever of the major bowls have the National Championship is where the #1 and #2 teams meet. We have to wait til next week to see what Miami does, but my guess is it will be Miami. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Miken Date: 23 Nov 02 - 11:30 PM Haruo, I don't watch a lot of footballsince my ex absconded with the season tickets to the Dawgs, but that was one of the strangest games I've seen the Huskies play in years. Lots of gunshot wounds to the foots and stuff, and then three overtimes!!!! Great fun. Mike |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Leadfingers Date: 24 Nov 02 - 08:38 AM I freely admit that this meant absolutey nothing to me.It must be some obscure Colonial fertility rite,I imagine. |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Hrothgar Date: 25 Nov 02 - 02:39 AM And what's wrong with cricket threads? This one might as well be in Swahili ... :-) |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Haruo Date: 25 Nov 02 - 08:50 PM Hrothgar, unadokeza kuwa wasema wa Kiswahili hawanafahamu kuhusu chenene?! Translation/Tafsiri: Hrothgar, are you suggesting that Swahili speakers can't fathom cricket?! Haruo | Lilendi |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Benjamin Date: 25 Nov 02 - 10:18 PM WE WON!!!! For the 5th year in a row. Seriously though, I wasn't aware that there would be any other Husky fans around here! I'm currently a guitar peformance at the University of Washington. |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Haruo Date: 27 Nov 02 - 02:04 AM Benjamin, I trust you're a guitar performance major, not a performance per se! ;-) I live in Fremont; both of my parents graduated from the UW. I was raised in Seattle back in the days when the Huskies were the only game in town (well, except for the hydros), and I'm just enough of a nostalgia buff to get all excited during the last quarter of each Apple Cup, and also to watch whatever bowl game they're in (if any). And I have a webpage for Esperanto-speaking Husky fans celebrating their 2001 Rose Bowl win, which gets four or five hits a month ;-). (The page title, "Kiel pri tiujn huŭndoj!!??", is Esperanto for "How's about them DAWGS!!??") fwiw - so yes, I guess I am, however eccentrically, a Husky fan of sorts. Haruo |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Mr Happy Date: 27 Nov 02 - 06:03 AM i thort it were about someone leaving their drinking vessel behind after a session in a pub somewhere. has the missing apple cup turned up yet? we could have a quest- like the wholly grail! |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Hrothgar Date: 28 Nov 02 - 03:21 AM Can somebody confirm, preferably in English, that this is about American football? Re-read the posts, and you'll notice that in only one post is there a clue for an outsider. |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Mark Cohen Date: 28 Nov 02 - 03:57 AM Oh, all right, then. The Apple Cup is the annual football game between the University of Washington (which is in Seattle, in the Western, civilized part of the state) and Washington State University (which is in Pullman). It got its name from one of the major crops of Washington State. The UW team is the Huskies, affectionately called the "Dawgs", and the WSU (or Wazoo) team is the Cougars, affectionately called the losers. Aloha, Mark Apologies to any Cougs fans out there. Your day will come. Maybe. |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Haruo Date: 28 Nov 02 - 09:02 PM Sorry, Hrothgar, yes, it's more or less about American football. I was just having a bit of fun with your employment of "Swahili" as a synonym for "Greek" (which itself has a different meaning in American collegiate contexts, oft enow). Haruo |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Hrothgar Date: 29 Nov 02 - 03:42 AM So what does "Greek" mean? |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Mr Happy Date: 29 Nov 02 - 05:04 AM & what have the greeks ever done 4 us? 8-] |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Haruo Date: 29 Nov 02 - 10:07 PM Hrothgar, "Greek" means a lot of different things in a lot of different contexts, but the synonymy I saw was between the fossil "It's all Greek to me" and your "this [thread] might as well be in Swahili". In US college circles "Greeks" often means collegians who hold membership in (and typically reside at) fraternities or sororities denominated by Greek-alphabet abbreviations (like ΔΤΔ or ΚΚΓ). Mr. Happy, too much to even contemplate listing. Haruo |
Subject: RE: Apple Cup 3:03 left in fourth From: Hrothgar Date: 30 Nov 02 - 05:12 AM Thanks. It was the fraternity thing I couldn't get. They don't exist to any great extent in Australian universities. |
