This question is for UK catters. My friend in Scotland just bought his first computer. We're looking for recommendations on the cheapest internet provider over there? He doesn't have much money to spare but can't wait to get on the internet. Maybe he'll even join Mudcat!

Create a Dial up Network using Totalserve as user name and Totalserve as password. Telephone number 0845 2066050. He can then use any Web based email program like Hotmail etc..

Depends on how much surfing he does.

If he doesn't do much, absolutely any "free" ISP will do. They all charge 1p/minute for dial-up access. If they charge for access, don't bother.

There's also some "unlimited time" deals, mainly done by the cable companies. NTL do unlimited time dial-up for £10/month, which breaks even with normal dial-up at 17 hours a month (average 32 minutes a day). If you tend to log on several times in a week and spend more than an hour connected each time, it's worth considering this; if not, don't bother.

Graham.

Tesco's do a good deal for about £12:99 a month. Pick up a free disc at the checkout in your local one.
