From: Fibula Mattock Date: 29 Nov 02 - 11:21 AM Me an' some reprobates in the chat room were just wondering about a Mudcat Meet in Ireland, mainly because they want an all-night session on a ferry. Anyway, we raised the possibility of a Mudcat Gathering in my fair home spot of Portaferry, Co. Down. (That's about 30 miles south of Belfast and on the end of the pointy-out Ards Peninsula - bclicky.)

Belfast City airport is only 10 minutes from the city centre. The bus service to Portaferry is less good. Much less good. But there are buses, and that's the main thing. It takes about an hour or more to go the 30 miles from Belfast by the direact route. The indirect route (serves the other side of the peninsula) takes a good bit longer. From Dublin, it's probably easier to get to Belfast first, and then go to Portaferry, although it's theoretically possible to go Dublin --> Newry --> Newcastle (where the Mountains of Mourne Sweep Down to the Sea) --> Downpatrick --> Strangford --> ferry boat (takes 10 mins) to Portaferry. The hardest part there is probably the very poor Downpatrick to Strangford bus service. |

Have you got a specific date in mind yet? Personally, I couldn't make 21 to 23 Feb (or 21 to 23 March for that matter) but obviously everyone will have some other commitments which would take precidence. Its usually possible to hire a whole youth hostel cheaply if there are enough takers. But I guess that that would be quite a financial risk and anyway maybe it would be too late to do it for this winter season. The key thing is getting a good base, as there were for Llanfair and Stony Stratford. Good luck with your "preliminary investigation prior to potential planning". (Did you get a chance to see the Fleadh brochure this year, and did you notice that inside the front cover; they had a picture of me and the Shepherdstown folks playing to a crowd on the church steps in Listowel). It only opened a couple of years ago, in fact, I don't think it was open all that long before I left Belfast, because I worked not far from there. It has good sessions apparently! |

Incidently, the $198 fares also cover Chi Town and Bean Town. So Fib, since it's the day you leave that sets the fare, for the US crowd, please keep the above dates in mind. And don't mind the comments about the cold, I bet Mick and I would spend the day in a sport shirt and vest. As my Dad used to say, "We Moores have the body shape that won Northern Europe". The dates I'm going to enquire about are: The weekend Friday 28 Feb - Monday 3rd March and The weekend Friday 7 March - Monday 10th March I think they can sleep up to 50 there (or maybe it was 30 - can't remember!). Anyway, I'll get the details and report back. I'm not sure how we'll go about booking. It's possible I could maybe ask them to hold a block of bookings provisionally for us, and then people could phone up individually and make arrangements directly with the hostel. So - last call - these dates okay...? |

To: Portaferry from: Belfast Follow the A20 through Newtownards, Grayabbey, Kircubbin then Portaferry. To: Portaferry from: Dublin Follow signs for The North/Newry, then through Downpatrick to Strangford - a 5 minute ferry crossing then takes you to Portaferry. Ferry Crossings from Strangford - a half-hourly service runs every day, except Christmas Day - only very extreme weather conditions affect crossings. Times are as follows: - for departures from Portaferry ADD 15 minutes. First Sailing - Mon-Fri 07:30 Sat 08:00 Sun 09:30 Last Sailing - Mon-Fri 22:30 Sat 23:00 Sun 22:30 Airlines: Buzz British Airways Easyjet aer arann British European Ryanair BMI (Bristish Midlands) BMI Baby Go Aer Lingus Sceptre Tours - as Claymore mentioned Ferries: Irish Ferries Stena Ferrybooker - an online ferry booking company Buses: Translink, the main (or rather, the only) transport company in N.I. runs Ulsterbus, the N.I. bus company. The first weekend gathering was the time I first encountered the versatile fiddler Geordie McAdam, a real character. He wasn't part of the gathering, but most of us who were would have heard Geordie playing at a pub session. The last time I saw Geordie was at the bluegrass and old-timey fest at the Ulster American Folk Park in the autumn of 2019. From: Felipa Date: 13 May 21 - 07:54 PM I did a Mudcat search re Geordie McAdam Peter K. aka Fionn asked whether Dianne Boulier and Geordie McAdam were at the session in Portaferry. So thanks to that I remember Dianne's surname; I knew her by the surname Skillen - her brother Norman Skillen and I both got a start in learning Irish language in the same course. Dianne's husband is also a musician and they were both at the session with the late Geordie McAdam. I wonder where Peter K. and his daughter Sorcha are these days, and "Fibula Mattock" for that matter; all no longer posting on Mudcat. At Portaferry Loughstock 20o3 also first met Micca (deceased 2020) and Leadfingers (partially incapacitated this year) and Noreen (we've renewed our acquaintance via Mudcat singarounds this year) and Skarpi (still posts on Mudcat). |
