Subject: Mudcat Gathering, N. Ireland, 2003?
From: Fibula Mattock
Date: 29 Nov 02 - 11:21 AM

Me an' some reprobates in the chat room were just wondering about a Mudcat Meet in Ireland, mainly because they want an all-night session on a ferry.

Anyway, we raised the possibility of a Mudcat Gathering in my fair home spot of Portaferry, Co. Down. (That's about 30 miles south of Belfast and on the end of the pointy-out Ards Peninsula - bclicky.)

It's a very scenic, nice wee spot. It has a lovely tourist hostel, a small caravan park, potentially the use of a garden for tents, 11 or so pubs (2 of which are especially great for sessions), pontoons for boats for anyone brave enough to sail into Strangford Lough, and there's all manner of music and festivals that have happened there, so there'll be no startling the locals!

Only drawback is ye have to get there. But it'd be nice to meet up with the Irish catters. Oh, and I'd get to visit my family at the same time.

Any interest?

Oh, and the proposed timing was February 2003. Someone mentioned that Stoney Stratford might not be happening, y'see. But I'll happily got to Stoney Stratford instead!

Interested in principle, but February wouldn't be a runner for me. Anyway if I wanted an all night session on a ferry (and I'm not sure I'd want to repeat some previous experiences of that type) I'd have to go from Dublin to Portaferry via the "Mainland" (sorry wrong thread!).

How is public transport from Belfast Airport to Portaferry? Is there a bus line?
Alternatively, from Dublin?

There's a good bus service from Belfast International to Belfast itself.
Belfast City airport is only 10 minutes from the city centre. The bus service to Portaferry is less good. Much less good. But there are buses, and that's the main thing. It takes about an hour or more to go the 30 miles from Belfast by the direact route. The indirect route (serves the other side of the peninsula) takes a good bit longer.

From Dublin, it's probably easier to get to Belfast first, and then go to Portaferry, although it's theoretically possible to go Dublin --> Newry --> Newcastle (where the Mountains of Mourne Sweep Down to the Sea) --> Downpatrick --> Strangford --> ferry boat (takes 10 mins) to Portaferry. The hardest part there is probably the very poor Downpatrick to Strangford bus service.

Noreen, what happened to the nose of your smiley?

Fibula, thanks for the fast answer!

I know about the ferry, I used it already (1999).
While waiting for it, I parked my bicycle with its red panniers next to one of these red post office columns - and some passer-by asked me whether I worked for the Royal Mail ;-)

1 hour is not too bad for going from Belfast to Portaferry by bus...

1 hour...minimum!!
I think it's probably 1hr15 mins, and more than likely 1hr45mins given the state of the roads once past Kircubbin (local village where tarmac seems to stop).

Just realized - February wouldn't work for me either. Folk music conference on the 8th, and my works conference on the 21st/22nd. And ... camping in February?

Funding? Yeh, if we had more time, and if we left from a Welsh port, there might be some Interreg money. Bet between the 2 of us, Patrish and I could write an almost credible application! Think it takes a few months though... (and I have an 'orrible feeling that we'd be found out!)

Count me in as a probable, FM!
Sounds like there should be some interest. Have you got a specific date in mind yet? Personally, I couldn't make 21 to 23 Feb (or 21 to 23 March for that matter) but obviously everyone will have some other commitments which would take precidence.
Its usually possible to hire a whole youth hostel cheaply if there are enough takers. But I guess that that would be quite a financial risk and anyway maybe it would be too late to do it for this winter season.
The key thing is getting a good base, as there were for Llanfair and Stony Stratford. Good luck with your "preliminary investigation prior to potential planning". Let us know if we can help in any way.

I'm truely interested, but I will have to check with the Sceptre Tour folks for cheap dates and car rentals. As you know, I'll need one of those famous disposable cars that they rent in Ireland. But I would love to see you and Ms. Moore again.

Final question, do you know if they plan to hold the Fleadh in the North this year? I've heard Newry, but nothing is confirmed. Any information would be appreciated. (Did you get a chance to see the Fleadh brochure this year, and did you notice that inside the front cover; they had a picture of me and the Shepherdstown folks playing to a crowd on the church steps in Listowel). What a hoot!

Claymore! I think you're banned from every car rental place in Ireland, North and South! Haven't heard anything about the fleadh, although every year they say they'll think of the north, but it's never there...
Glad there's a positive response so far. I'm flexible with dates, so most weekends in Feb/March are good for me. I'll give my folks a call over the weekend and see what they think of the whole idea.

PS Do kazoos have a similar reproductive capacity to bodhrans? Is there a wild population in Ireland, or are they a controlled species? Will mine be impounded at Larne/Aldergrove?

forty two, sounds like a good idea - but what is John Hewitt? A Pub? And almost as important: where?
I'd be interested in transport, as I fly in - if I come...?

I've been to Belfast, but I can't remember very much, certainly not a John Hewitt...
The only "Hewitt" I could locate on my Belfast street map is "Hewitt Parade" (between Strandtown, Bloomfield and Ballyhackamore)

Mudguard - the John Hewitt is a pub on Donegall St. in Belfast (round and about the "Cathedral Quarter" area in the city centre - the oldest part of Belfast). It only opened a couple of years ago, in fact, I don't think it was open all that long before I left Belfast, because I worked not far from there. It has good sessions apparently!

Well, I was planning to treat myself to a trip to Ireland to celebrate my 40th birthday in July 2003 -- any chance of doing it that time of year either instead or again? :-) I haven't really figured out how I would structure my trip, but it MUST include lots of music and good company...

I've never been to Ireland or anywhere in the UK, so I'm open to suggestion.

Peace,

JudyO

Hallo Claymore!

Well, the fleadh this year is in Clonmel - not the north (No surprises there then!) Twould be nice to meet up in Portaferry - and I've a few friends over there I'd persuade to come along.

Going to have to have a look a my leave, work - and other things before I can consider it properly though....

And Claymore - me thinks you may be better buying an old banger rather than a brand spanking new rental.... ps everyone - Claymore should have a five mile restriction zone - infact, we'd better synchronise watches to make sure we're not around - witness - anywhere near Claymore, sheep, or walls when he's out and about...

Sounds good!

Mick, the agency I usually book through, Sceptre Tours, (secptreireland.com) is offering $198 round-trip out of NY on Aer Lingus, for three periods, Nov 15-Dec 17, Dec 27-Dec 9, and Mar 23-Mar 29. the period Dec 18-Dec 23 is $509. and the period covering St. Paddy's, Mar 10-Mar-22 is $318. Incidently, the $198 fares also cover Chi Town and Bean Town.

So Fib, since it's the day you leave that sets the fare, for the US crowd, please keep the above dates in mind. And don't mind the comments about the cold, I bet Mick and I would spend the day in a sport shirt and vest. As my Dad used to say, "We Moores have the body shape that won Northern Europe".

(And Ella, that comment only applies to the Newtonards-to-Nova Scotia-to-Boston, branch of the Moores...)

Finally, yes, two of the three accidents I had were in the North, but in the first case, the gal with the baby carriage stepped out just as I hit the top of the hill and she should have heard my motor, and in the second, that damn sheep didn't move at all. You know, every evasive action skill an American develops in the course of forty years of driving (18 in police pursuits) goes out the window when you start the action from the wrong side of the road to begin with...
