Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Gloomy Winter' Dougie Mc Lean From: GUEST,noddy Date: 03 Dec 02 - 08:40 AM for info on Dougie Maclean visit his website, "taybank" will get you there. That is the name of his hotel in the tiny city of Dunkeld.,and is well worth a visit any night or day for music . Friday night has a club in the upstairs room and Occassional guess on a Sunday. The Crown in Aberfeldy is well worth a visit on a Thursday night. The best place tho is Castle Menzies. This is a REAL CASTLE and has occassional concerts in a superb room. The Laird is usual serving behind the bar. Dougie appears in the hotel every now and then and sings, plays. He has a concert in the Birnam Institute soon ,I think Sat 7th Dec so he should be around. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Gloomy Winter' Dougie Mc Lean From: Jim McLean Date: 03 Dec 02 - 02:04 PM I noticed in some threads attached to this song that R A Smith is credited with writing the music. Smith wrote that he married the tune 'Lord Balgownie's Favourite' with Tannahills words at the behest of a young lady who was 'particulary fond of the Scottish melody'. He arranged it 'with symphonies and accompaniment for the pianoforte'. Jim McLean |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Gloomy Winter' Dougie Mc Lean From: Nerd Date: 04 Dec 02 - 03:24 AM The tune to which most people sing this song was ripped off by Michael Nyman as the main theme to "The Piano." I don't know if it's the tune Dougie sings, though... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gloomy Winter's Now Awa (Dougie MacLean) From: Jack Campin Date: 29 Apr 11 - 01:29 PM The tune was originally the guild march of the Corporation of Tailors (probably of Edinburgh, if they differed between cities), published by James Aird in Glasgow in 1781. See my discussion here: Embro, Embro: tunes about work My favourite version is Daniel MacLaren's strathspey (which also predates Smith and Tannahill) - not very singable. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gloomy Winter's Now Awa (Dougie MacLean) From: GUEST,George from Hamilton Date: 02 May 11 - 09:07 AM The Tuning for Gloomy Winter is actually CGCGCEb, not CGCGCD as I said in my previous message, so apologies for the error. George |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gloomy Winter's Now Awa (Dougie MacLean) From: GUEST Date: 15 Sep 11 - 08:13 AM Can anyone send me the full translation of the song? Or a full description of what the song is about? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gloomy Winter's Now Awa (Dougie MacLean) From: GUEST,Wee Jock Date: 15 Sep 11 - 10:27 AM Just to reiterate this song was writtenby Robert Tannahill who was born in Paisley 1774 and died in 1810, of a weaving family and was a contemporary of Robert Burns. At present they are 2 CD's containg Tannahill's poems. Despite what some people think, Dougie Maclean did not write all the stuff that he recorded. PS Scotland has produced many writers of song not only Dougie Maclean, but Archie Fisher and the late Lionel Macleland, to name but two. Regards Wee Jock |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Gloomy Winter's Now Awa (Dougie MacLean) From: Jim Dixon Date: 19 Sep 11 - 08:02 PM It's unfortunate that this thread got grouped with Dougie MacLean's songs. It would have been better to group it with the two other threads about this song: Lyr Req: Gloomy Winter's Now Awa' Lyr/Chords Req: Gloomy Winter's Now Awa (Tannahill) Both of those threads contain lyrics. |
