It was great to have Andy Vine visit us at The Bromborough Folk Club in Port Sunlight tonight and sing this wonderful song of his:- Woman of Labrador.
Andy has lived in Canada for over 35 years, and wrote the song after reading this woman's story in a book. It is very direct, simple, and powerful.
Apparently Andy was a key figure at the old Black Horse Folk Club, (where the Tom Topping Band also used to play) more years ago than he'd care to be reminded of! He was over here on a brief visit, but took time to pop in for a couple of songs - one of which had an amazing rhyme scheme:- licensed premises/ nemesis/ Genesis.
I hope it won't be too long before he returns.

A piano/vocal/guitar arrangement of Woman of Labrador can be found in the folk song anthology Sing Around This One (Vinland Music 1997) here

In a note on the song Andy wrote:

"I was working in St. John's and I rented a room in an old section of the downtown. The house had a fireplace, so I bought some coal and settled in to read a book - Woman of Labrador by Elizabeth Goudie. I felt the spirit of the land and the people come into me, and the song just came out. At first I was shy about singing it. The song is so simple I was afraid I would be laughed at. But it has become my most popular song. Some songs just cannot not be written!"

Wonderful song... a relative's research brought up a similar story of an aristocratic young woman from France who came over with the Kings Brides to Quebec in the 1600's and kept the growing family going while dad kept hiking off to Green Bay and ohter far flung areas. He has dedicated statues. I always felt she deserved more. This song brought it all home. Thanks

Kathy

My thanks to Matthew and others for the nice things said about my song, Woman of Labrador. The other song with the amazing rhyming scheme is "The Errant Apprentice" and yes it is in the DT database. I learned it from the singing of Andy M. Stewart and it has become my facourite party piece.
