Subject: Looking for stray Xmas songs From: GUEST,maire-aine at work Date: 10 Dec 02 - 09:29 AM I'm in the process of collecting Christmas songs from non-holiday albums, and I'm looking for suggestions. Can you suggest any good songs that may get overlooked this time of year? I found the three Jethro Tull songs (Christmas Song, Solstice Bells, Another Christmas Song) and Emerson Lake & Palmer (Nutrocker) and Dar Williams' Christians and Pagans. Any others? |
Subject: RE: Looking for stray Xmas songs From: Clinton Hammond Date: 10 Dec 02 - 11:32 AM There's another KILLER Jethro Tull X-mas type song called "Jackfrost And The Hooded Crow" It's off one of the albums in the 20 Years Of Tull set... If ya find it, I love a copy! :-) |

Subject: RE: Looking for stray Xmas songs From: Geoff the Duck Date: 10 Dec 02 - 09:41 PM I seem to recall a thread about 12 months back which covered a lot of this material, but for a different reason. Unfortunately I can't recall the thread title to do a search for it. Somebody wanted seasonal songs but not carols or specifically Christmas stuff. Not the one I have mentioned.... here is a thread to check! Also Mike Harding's Christmas in the trenches, about the First World War. |

Subject: RE: Looking for stray Xmas songs From: Chris C Date: 10 Dec 02 - 11:29 PM I don't think these show up on the threads suggested above (I just looked quickly): I remember a real pretty one on the Pretender's "Learning To Crawl" album. And (although this has NOTHING to do w/ Christmas) Robert Johnson makes a passing reference to Christmas in "Hellhounds On My Trail". Happy Holidays |
Subject: RE: Looking for stray Xmas songs From: Clinton Hammond Date: 10 Dec 02 - 11:39 PM If it's the same "Christmas in the Trenches", then it's a John Mckutcheon song... Mike Harding may have recorded it, but that doesn't make it his... :-) |
Subject: RE: Looking for stray Xmas songs From: SlickerBill Date: 10 Dec 02 - 11:53 PM Bruce Cockburn's got a couple of gooduns. One from his Christmas album called Early On One Christmas Morn is great. There's one from an earlier cd, I think it's Nothing But A Burning Light, and the song is .....shoot! can't think of the title, but it's a great telling of the Christmas story with lines like: "joseph comes to mary with his hat in his hand. he says'forgive me, I thought you were with another man.' She says, 'What if I had been, but I wasn't anyway. But guess what? I felt the baby move today ...'". Just some great stuff. There's another couple of tunes by Randy Stonehill that I think are pretty cool and relatively obscure. One's called the Christmas Song, I think from an album sometime in the '70's called Welcome To Paradise. Then he's got one from a record called Stories, titled "Christmas At Denny's" which I just love, but have never gotten around to figuring out, so if you get this one let me know how you do it. Cheers, SB |

Subject: RE: Looking for stray Xmas songs From: An Croenen Date: 11 Dec 02 - 05:14 PM Joni Mitchell sings on her album Blue a song that is not exactly expressing enthusiasm for the festive season (with the lyrics 'I wish I had a river I could skate away on'), so a different slant but probably not what you're looking for! Subject: RE: Looking for stray Xmas songs From: Tig Date: 11 Dec 02 - 07:40 PM Bet you've not heard Christmas in Australia by Roaring Jelly! We sent a tape of the record 'In the Roar' with it on to Alison as part of her SS prezzies. |
Subject: RE: Looking for stray Xmas songs From: dwditty Date: 11 Dec 02 - 08:07 PM I have been singing a song called Pretty Little Baby that Harry Belafonte recorded in the 1950's. It has a swing/spiritual feel, and has been well received on Paltalk. |
