Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: murray@saltspring.com Date: 25 Jun 98 - 03:35 AM I expect you'll be inundated with stuff, tho I must admit I would have thought Australia already had enough rude things going around. We've had a number on this Forum, and I suppose if you browse long enough you'll find them, There's a lot on the Digital Tradition database: look for "bawdy", I expect [right, Max?]-- I'll probably be in touch emailwise personally, though, since I've got quite a few of these unconsidered trifles in my luggage. Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: kiwi@unagi.cybernothing.org Date: 25 Jun 98 - 08:58 AM Well, I don't know how well-known the tunes are, but they're certainly well-known enough to raise a groan of protest (and maybe a few daggers flying in your direction) if you were to sing "The Ball of Ballynore" or "Roll Your Leg Over" at a Renaissance Festival. If you'd like some of the lyrics, EMail me privately. They're the type of song where there are about 50 verses that everyone knows, and a bunch that are native to each Faire. :) Sla/n, Kiwi |
Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: Bo Date: 25 Jun 98 - 11:27 AM Why dont you folks post them to the forum? With a thread heading like this anyone who is offended can easily ignore the songs and those that are interested can listen in. I always imagine that every private Emailed song is a perfect jem, and I wont get to see it. :( bo |
Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: Bert Date: 25 Jun 98 - 03:15 PM Murray is right. Search for @bawdy. DT has a fabulous collection, all you could wish for. |
Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: Chet W. Date: 25 Jun 98 - 07:43 PM I have often included virtual objectionable lines in traditional songs. For example, from the Yellow Rose of Texas: O, I sure will be happy when I get to that place, So the Yellow Rose of Texas can sit down on my lap. It doesn't rhyme, some people get the joke and enjoy it, and others have nothing to complain about. Chet W. |
Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: Date: 26 Jun 98 - 04:13 AM I seem to remember folks complaining about the inclusion of unseemly things on a forum that could be accessed by the impressionable. Which includes children, I suppose; but they'll be drawn by a "bawdy" heading anyway-- and if I remember rightly, Bo you yourself said you wouldn't want to see filth for filth's sake. From my own point of view, these are perfectly valid folksongs, and so worth my study. I do admit some of them are a bit manky (to coin a Scoticism) but then, I've been trying to save these orphans for a long time, and have compiled me a collection called < |

Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: Doctor John Date: 26 Jun 98 - 09:18 AM Oscar Brandt and Ed McCurdy have recorded several albums but I guess they're hard to obtain now. What about the other way round? Woody Guthrie wrote "Union Maid" to the bawdy "Redwing"! |
Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: kiwi@unagi.cybernothing.org Date: 26 Jun 98 - 05:14 PM Bo,
Done deal. I'll be back later to post the lyrics to the forum. Oh, and by the way, "The Ball of Ballynore" is essentially the same as "The Gathering of the Clans", but with a bunch of different verse, mostly Renaissance Festival oriented.

Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: Date: 27 Jun 98 - 02:32 AM Please, please, folks, it really bothers my pedantic old soul when you talk about "The Ball of Ballynoor" or "The Gathering of the Clans" etc. etc. The original is a bawdy Scots song, "The Ball of Kirriemuir", which is a real place in the east of the country. If anyone wants chapter and verse and background and all that, let me know. These other titles are often the result of some catchpenny rogue putting the thing into a book and deliberately changing the title (and the words, not to mention fiddling with the tune) so as to be "original", complete with royalties. Case in point: our Canadian balladeer, Oscar Brand. Cheers Murray@saltspring.com |
Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: Kiwi Date: 27 Jun 98 - 07:18 AM Terribly sorry, Murray. That one slipped my mind, and I should know better, because I SAW the lyrics to "The Ball of Kerremuir" last year and even sang a few of them. But again, it's a spinoff of said song, with different verses. Sla/n, Kiwi |
Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: Murray@saltspring.com Date: 28 Jun 98 - 02:46 AM It might be an idea to maintain this particular thread for talking about the whys & wherefores, theory if you like, and start new threads for entry of the various songs. I suppose that's in folks' minds anyway. See the new thread on "The Ball of Ballynure" (ugh!). But Brad's query also has to do with bawdy words to perfectly innocent tunes. Parodies, most like, but some probably original (in the sense of being an independent poem fitted to the tune). In fact, somewhere I'm sure I've heard a smutty masterpiece to the tune of "Waltzing Matilda". Is my memory correct here?? |
Subject: Lyr Add: BLACK EYED SUZIE From: Frank in the swamps Date: 28 Jun 98 - 06:57 AM I'm blasting the forum with a pretty comprehensive volley of The Holy Modal Rounders this morning, 'cuz it all seems to fit. This is what I remember of their rendition of "Black Eyed Suzie.” I don't have a turntable, so I can't check the old vinyl discs, but here goes...
My pretty little Suzie's just half grown,
[CHORUS] Hey, black-eyed Suzie, hey, pretty little black-eyed Suzie,
I gave your little brother a big silver dollar.
Your momma she's gonna tan your hide. Now comes the real dirty verse. If you've never heard this recording, it's hard to describe how funny it really is. On the printed page (or monitor) it looks simply puerile, but it is sung so that it sounds like all nonsense syllables. I had this record for years before it hit me what they were saying.... TheonlythingIliketodobetterthanmydoodlingispokemyheadbetweenherlegsanddoalittleyodeling.
Hey, black-eyed Suzie, Hey, pretty little black-eyed Suzie,

Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: Pete Peterson (lutrine@itw.com) Date: 30 Jun 98 - 11:22 PM The Holy Modal Rounders had whole BUNCHES of dirty parodies, some of which they recorded & some of which are only passed down through oral tradition. Does anybody know their extra verse to Poole's Baltimore Fire? |

Subject: RE: Any rude/dirty lyrics to any folk tunes? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 11 Mar 02 - 07:25 PM No need for parody - just listen The Cuckoos' Nest or The Bonny Black Hare to get enough bawdy stuff to last a lifetime! Mind you, I've always said, in Folk music, if you can understand the words it's about death - if you can't it's about sex!!! Cheers DtG |
