I don't know any songs that share a tune with Star of the County Down, so I decided to post in a different thread. :)

Is anybody familiar with "Over the Hills", a love song to to the tune of "The Foggy Dew"? I'm curious as to which came first...

And the song "Stone and Dove".. I've been trying to figure out for the past year why the tune is so familiar. If anyone would like to help me out, I can send you the lyrics. ;)

Sla/n, kiwi

Kiwi

Have a look at the "Foggy Dew" thread some time back. Your "Over the Hills" sounds like the John McCormack one - and would pre-date the "revolutionary" one which refers to the 1916 RIsing in Dublin.

Regards

The Canadian folk song, Scarborough Settler's Lament, is to the tune of O' A' the Airts the Wind Can Blaw.

The beginning of "Jack Tar", a song that seems related to "Jolly Roving Tar", sounds like the beginning to the Ballad of Jesse James.

There is a Scottish fiddle tune, also played in Cape Breton, which sounds to me like the tune of Seven Nights Drunk.

Incidently, I still can't hear any resemblence between The Star of the County Down and any version of The Banks of Newfoundland I have ever heard.

Oh, and I should have mentioned that Stan Rogers's "Watching The Apples Grow" is to the tune of "The Cherokee Shuffle", although the liner notes don't mention this.

Tim, do you know anyone who recorded the Cherokee Shuffle?

Search for the song you want
Notice the name of the tunefile
then search for the tunefile name
this should pull up those other songs that share the tunefile
this is not foolproof - sometimes Dick enters a tune, listens to to it, and then says "Oh, that's the same tune as X" but since the he has just entered the tune, it will get its own tune name.
