Subject: Working Over Christmas From: GUEST Date: 22 Dec 02 - 08:51 AM Eh up all you mudcatters, spare a thought for all those people who have to work over the jolly Christmas break, e.g nurses, policemen etc How about posting them a cheery xmas message to show how much we appreciate them? |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: mack/misophist Date: 22 Dec 02 - 09:23 AM I always fought to get to work on Xmas - the one day a year when the pay was really good. On the whole, it's a nice day to work, too. |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: jets Date: 22 Dec 02 - 10:37 AM Before I retired ,I had Christmass and every other holiday off, once every seven years. I was on that job for 23yrs so in those 23yrs ,I had three work free Christmass days. |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: GUEST,COCO Date: 22 Dec 02 - 10:44 AM I used to work on Christmas mornings in hospice care. The nature of the work made it worth while. There are always people less fortunate than ourselves. As for thse people who are working on Xmas day a big thank you as you are helping someone,somewhere.....MERRY CHRISTMAS and all the best for the NEW YEAR. |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: Sorcha Date: 22 Dec 02 - 12:51 PM I can't remember the last time Mr. had Christmas off. He is one of the cops. We don't mind, our kids are grown and we are happy to let the guys with small children have the day off. |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: Amos Date: 22 Dec 02 - 01:04 PM Well, I am of the opinion that Christmas could use a good working over, and I think the 'Catters of the world are just the folks to do it, too!! A |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: Gareth Date: 22 Dec 02 - 01:08 PM Oh I don't know, working over Xmas ha its advantages, no need to visit the relatives, an excuse for avoiding the pubs when they are full of amature drinkers, enhanced pay. Gareth - On duty in the control room 2200 hrs 24th till 0800 25th, 2200 25th to 0800 26th. |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: Ebbie Date: 22 Dec 02 - 03:51 PM I may have reported this before: In Portland Oregon, for the last 25 years or so, some members of the Jewish community annually relieve people in some essential community services on Christmas Day. Someone told me recently that the favor is reciprocated on Jewish holy days by the gentile community. Things like that give me hope. Think Palestine and Israel! |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: Lin in Kansas Date: 23 Dec 02 - 02:15 AM Huh. I live with Scrooge AND The Grinch, so the fact that I'll be working on Christmas Day actually makes my life easier. Scrooge will be cooking, The Grinch will be sleeping, no relatives present unless the stepson and his girlfriend show up--couldn't be better! And as a freelancer for 17 years, I usually worked either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day anyway. At least now I get to stay home to do it. Lin |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: Liz the Squeak Date: 23 Dec 02 - 03:04 AM This Spring 4 biggish offices merged, making one huge one. Our workload quadrupled but our staffing only doubled. I booked my Christmas leave in August! We only have public holidays plus 1 priviledge day, and no enhanced pay so what's the point. I've always admired those who continue to work throughout any public or general holiday, not just Christmas, having done it myself, I know how much joy it can bring. I've also seen the misery and disappointments too. Blessings on all of them. LTS |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: Amos Date: 23 Dec 02 - 10:10 AM Well if anyone is planning to give Xmas tis well-deserved working over, how about working over the whole work-week calendar, while you're at it. It hink four on, three off would run much more smoothly than the present 5/2 arrangement. And we really ought to reshuffle some of those silly commercial days like Valentine's, Cinqo de Mayo, Father's and Mother's Days, and perhaps add a few like Secretary's Day -- say, System Administrator's Day, Programmer's Day, Transport Person's Day, Elevator Operator's Day, Documentation Specialist's Day, Ad-Writer's Day, Heavy Equipment Operator's Day, Nose-Flute Player's Day, Busker's Day, Opera Singer's Day, String Player's Day, Dugout Occupant's Day -- the list could go on to several thousand items, which would mean we would have to double and treble them up. With that much observance required of each calendar day, we would probably not have any time left to work! 'Course all those days would then become unnecessary and irrelevant, but what else is new? :>) A |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: GUEST,jaze Date: 23 Dec 02 - 06:43 PM I'm with you,Amos. Whoever thought up this 5/2 deal anyway? 4/3 has many advantages. Moral would be higher. Businesses could save on utilities. And we could consume less oil with less driving and commuting. We should start a movement. |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: Leadfingers Date: 23 Dec 02 - 07:06 PM I'm all in favour of the two day week and the five day weekend(with no reduction in salary,of course)which would mean we could go to ALL the festivals without booking holidays. And what happened to the idea that with computors we would have paperless offices and far more liesure time? Not in the company I do the day Job in. |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: Nancy King Date: 23 Dec 02 - 07:50 PM Amos, I think you're on the right track. But as far as giving Christmas a working-over, it seems to me the Mudcat Tavern Christmas thread is doing a fine job of that! Hilarious but twisted -- or twisted but hilarious -- or... My brother, who now works for the new Transportation Safety Adm. at Dulles Airport, still doesn't know whether he'll have to work his regular noon-to-nine stint on Christmas Day or not. Hope he finds out soon. Bless all those good folks who keep things running while the rest of us enjoy our friends and families. Cheers, Nancy |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: rock chick Date: 24 Dec 02 - 09:39 AM I will be working over Christmas' in the kitchen' I would rather be out at work but as I freelance from home there is no escape. Will have the whole two days with 'the mother in law' still can look forward to the rest after the holidays. Happy holidays to one and all mudcatters. |
Subject: RE: Working Over Christmas From: Art Thieme Date: 24 Dec 02 - 09:19 PM Carol has religious convictions against celebrating Christmas, so not much happens here. I used to make it a point to be on the road playing music somewhere for that and other holidays. There were always quite a few good people who were glad to have a show to listen to on Christmas eve and night. Same went for Thanksgiving etc. Having a coffeehouses to hang out in on those nights was especially appreciated by those who were alone and didn't want to have to go to a bar. We could've done a full-blown AA meeting I think. Art Thieme |
