This song was sung to me by Dear Hubby's father, who learned it from his grandfather; so, I'm guessing the song is at least post-Civil War, circa 1880's. I can't remember all the words (of course), but the refrain/chorus has the line -- 'Is there someone waiting for me' OR 'will someone be waiting for me', or something to that effect.

I'm trying to get in touch with my father-in-law for some more lyrics; but, he lives in the country and was 'gone to town' today. ;-)

The storyline is about two sisters, sitting beside a river bank, with one sister lamenting her lack of a lover. While she is singing, a lone horseman rides by and answers her lament, replying 'Yes, there is someone waiting for you' -- who, of course, turns out to be himself. Strike any chords, 'Catters?

I know it's not much to go on; but, I'm betting on that Ol' Cat Magic to work once again ;-)

Even I know the song. It was popularized in Cape Breton by a fellow named Charlie MacKinnon. He sang it on a recording in the 60s or late 50s.

Apparently Grandpa Jones sang it and it's on a Camsco 5 CD collection.

Sam McGee recorded this song in 1926 as "In a Cool Shady Nook". It's on Sam McGee: Complete Recorded Works 1926-1934 (Document DOCD-8036). This is the earliest on the list in Meade et al.'s Country Music Sources (p. 241).

The earliest recording by an old-timey artist was by Sam McGee under the title 'In a Cool Shady Nook'. I reckon it is different enough to warrant posting here. There were other recordings by old-timey musicians - Riley Puckett, Stapleton Brothers, Bradley Kincaid, Pie Plant Pete, and Carlisle Brothers, mostly under the 'Somewhere Somebody's Waiting For You' title.
