Subject: Tech: OPT OUT Of Yahoo Web Beacon snooping From: Alice Date: 03 Jan 03 - 06:44 PM FYI if you use Yahoo for anything: Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track Yahoo users around the net and see what you're doing - similar to cookies. Take a look at their updated privacy statement: http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us/pixels/details.html About half-way down the page, in the section "Outside the Yahoo! Network", you'll see a little "click here" link that will let you opt-out of their new method of snooping. I recommend doing this. Once you have clicked that link, you are opted out. Be careful because there is a "Cancel Opt- out" button that, if clicked, will *undo** the opt-out. Feel free to forward this to other groups. |

Subject: RE: Tech: OPT OUT Of Yahoo Web Beacon snooping From: rangeroger Date: 03 Jan 03 - 10:34 PM Thank you Alice. I just went through the procedure. I have been getting far too much spam with a yahoo address. I hope this may stem some of it. rr |

Subject: RE: Tech: OPT OUT Of Yahoo Web Beacon snooping From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 04 Jan 03 - 06:03 AM thanks for the info - another folk club I belong to has a yahoo group & I've sent it to our techo person who organised it in case it affects the list. |
Subject: RE: Tech: OPT OUT Of Yahoo Web Beacon snooping From: mack/misophist Date: 04 Jan 03 - 11:06 PM Yahoo has no services that cannot be found elsewhere. When a big company offends, we have no choice but to kick it in the crotch. It won't notice anything else. Go elsewhere. And remember; this is the company that was in the news recently for refusing to allow their janitors a living wage. |
Subject: RE: Tech: OPT OUT Of Yahoo Web Beacon snooping From: Genie Date: 04 Jan 03 - 11:16 PM Funny, but I hardly get any SPAM at my yahoo mailbox, and very little at onebox.com, but I get TONS of it (mostly smut, with some "financial opportunities" thrown in) at both Hotmail and AOL. DK why. I never respond to any of it. Thanks for the heads up, though. Genie |
Subject: RE: Tech: OPT OUT Of Yahoo Web Beacon snooping From: Alice Date: 05 Jan 03 - 02:17 PM The info I posted was provided on one of the Yahoo discussion lists that I belong to. Even if you don't have a Yahoo email address, they will use web beacons on your discussion list membership information. |
Subject: RE: Tech: OPT OUT Of Yahoo Web Beacon snooping From: Bill D Date: 05 Jan 03 - 05:56 PM There are many Yahoo 'groups' for discussion of everything from cooking pasta to ....well, some pretty jaw dropping themes.....and in EVERY case, when you join a group, there are default settings at the signup allowing email contacts to you by the group and by commercial interests. This means that, unless YOU read carefully and uncheck the boxes, you will get deluged by spam...Yahoo lives by the carelessness of those who pay no attention. |
