Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 10 Mar 03 - 03:07 AM Hi Letty, hereby I confirm my mail of Jan 20, 2003. I have some questions about the hostel (never used one before, only tents or barracks): Do I need a sleeping bag there? Or do they let bedsheets? (presuming there are beds.) In the worst case two trees, distance m 2,5, will do for a hammock. Wilfried |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 10 Mar 03 - 08:01 AM Hi there! Sorry for the late response, but I've had a lot to do (including finding a new job) lately. However, now it's (almost) back to normal and I've found the time to sort things out. This is the first post in a series (accommodation, how to get there, what to do). Also, don't forget to check out the previous thread for more tips! First of all: since the response to my question about the youth hostel hasn't been overwhelming (only Wilfried confirmed he wants to stay there), I've decided not to do a block booking. This means, everyone will have to book for him/herself, although I'd be more than happy to assist you with this (most hostel and hotel staff speak English, though, so don't worry) I've included a list of people attending at the bottom, and where they are staying (so far). So, secondly: where to stay? Basically, there are 4 options: -The youth hostel (very simple, but affordable, near the city centre, open all night, lockers available, choice between dorm and room, bring sleeping back or hire bedlinen): website youth hostel Simplon , Boterdiep 73-2 9712 LL Groningen Tel: 050-3135221 Their website is available in English and German. Prices: E11,40 (dorm), E29,50 (single room), E42,95 (double room), reservations E1,40; local tourism tax E0,70 per night; breakfast E4,00; bedlinen E2,80. -A hotel. Plenty of choice on this page. The Martini Hotel is affordable, and so is Hotel Groningen Garni, Damsterdiep 94, tel. 3135435. Pricier are the Best Western and the Hotel de Ville . If you want to be able to crawl home after the Saturday night session, book a room in Hotel Friesland (a very simple hotel, maybe even bookable per hour if you know what I mean), Kl. Pelsterstraat 4 (that's right opposite the bar), tel. 050-3121307. -Bed and breakfast. B&Bs are a new and rare phenomenon in the Netherlands, but I've managed to find a few. I haven't inspected them, but they're affordable and situated at convenient locations: Woonschip "Kari" Ms E.E. Verment Tel: 050-5347920 E-mail: ettie.verment@hccnet.nl On a ship in the city centre, listed as 17,50 euro p/night. Kitchen facilities. Court Hengeveld and Geertje van der Zijpp Oranjestraat28a 9717 GC Groningen Tel: 050-3146307 Fax: 050-3146307 E-mail: geertje@thelastbuscards.com Website: here Non-smoking. 22,50 Euro. 5 minutes from city centre. Mr Bleker Herestraat67a 9711 LC Groningen Tel: 050-3120617 Fax: 0505717557 This is Groningen's main shopping street! 15,90 Euro Fam. G. Kamsma Oude Ebbingestraat57A 9712 HC Groningen Tel: 050-3120526 / 06-50448674 Also in the city centre. 17 Euros -Camping. Warning: it may still be very cold in May! The city's camping site is not at walking distance from the city centre, but there is a bus service (at night you may have to take a cab). Their website is here. So, take your pick, and please tell me where you're staying! For those of you staying in my brother's flat, here's the address: Deliplein 116 9715 DD Groningen And my parents': Wilhelminastraat 3 9401 NL Assen In Holland, you can reach me on my mobile phone (06-52101345) or call my brother (Willem, 06-41423286). My parents' phone number: 0592-314245. When phoning from abroad, first dial 0031 and leave out the first '0' in the phone number. If you need to call me before the weekend, I'm in Germany at 0049 (0) 234 7089128) For those who are staying at my brother's place: please bring a sleeping bag and a mat! I will be in Groningen from Thursday 1 May until Tuesday 6 May. People can stay over in moose mansion from Friday until (and including) Monday, but my brother needs his flat back on Monday night. People (possibly) attending: Bill Sables (Willem's) Bron & sister (hotel) Eric the Viking (Willem's) Fossil & co (?) Glen and Ron (Assen) Jezebel (?) McGrath (?) Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 10 Mar 03 - 08:04 AM Wilfried: I don't know if you've read the previous post, but yes: bring your own sleeping bag, or reserve bedlinen (2,80 euros). You can also rent a safe for your luggage. Bron: hope this helps, I'll PM the hotel bit to you as well. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 10 Mar 03 - 08:12 AM !!!!!!!!Take note:!!!!!!!!!! Ryanair will start daily flights from London Stansted to Groningen Airport (yes, we have one) from 1 May! This may still be an option for those of you who haven't booked yet! Keep a check on Ryanair's website. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Wolfgang Date: 10 Mar 03 - 08:39 AM I shall be coming. As for accomodation, I have a cousin near Groningen and hope to lodge there. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 10 Mar 03 - 09:31 AM Great to hear you're coming, Wolfgang! Eric and Skipjack: if you arrive that late, would you like me to pick you up from the station? Or would you rather go straight to the pub? BTW, anyone buying a train ticket in Holland: you can ask for a 'treintaxi" (train taxi) ticket. This means you get a cheap voucher for a taxi fare within the city of arrival, good value! The train taxis have their own taxi ring right in front of the station. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 10 Mar 03 - 09:32 AM Did I say ring? I meant rank of course. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: GUEST,EtV@work Date: 10 Mar 03 - 10:34 AM Hi Letty, thanks for the information. Haven't decided about getting picked up, will re-check train times. Ryan Air fly out on a Thursday, so it wouldn't be any good to us, but nice to know they are expanding. Prices are 29.00 pounds each way (inc taxes) so 60.00 return. Pretty good, I think Skip and I paid only a little more to go from Leeds/Bradford some 18Km away, so journey time and travel is shortened for us. Richard, thankyou. See you all soon |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: GUEST,EtV@work Date: 10 Mar 03 - 10:47 AM Been on to Multimap and printed off maps, so can find way if nescessary, but a pick up might be nice. Will give details later. It's only about 1km from the station. Cheers Eric |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: GUEST,EtV@work Date: 10 Mar 03 - 10:53 AM Sorry for the numerous short postings, I'm in between tasks! Letty please thank your brother in advance for his kindness and the use of his flat. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Eric the Viking Date: 13 Mar 03 - 11:40 AM Only 7 weeks to go! |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 14 Mar 03 - 09:10 AM And here is the "how to get there" post. I'll try to be inclusive, but if you have any questions left: don't hesitate to ask. Groningen is in the north of the Netherlands, and can be reached by train, bus and even airplane (and of course you can drive, walk, bike, sail or skate there as well!). TRAINS and BUSES FROM THE AIRPORT Amsterdam Airport From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, take a train to Groningen. Be sure to buy a ticket at the counter or from the machines, because you cannot buy tickets on the train (instead, they'll fine you)! There are direct train services to Groningen, or, alternatively, you can take a train to Enschede and change at Amersfoort (other side of the platform, ask staff!). The train may be split in Zwolle, so make sure you are in the right compartment (destination should be marked on the outside, plus they call out the numbers in Zwolle). For timetables, see here . You might want to buy a "treintaxi" ticket, a ticket that includes a voucher for a taxi in the place of arrival. Groningen Airport Ryanair will introduce daily flights from London Stansted to Groningen Airport from 1 May! This may still be an option for those of you who haven't booked yet! Check out Ryanair's website. From Groningen Airport, take the 52 or 53 Arriva bus to Groningen, which will take you to the train and bus station. FROM OTHER PLACES For timetables, see here . From Brussels or Antwerp, take a train to Rotterdam. In Rotterdam, change for Amersfoort. In Amersfoort, change for Groningen. Make sure you're in the right compartment, the train may be split in Zwolle. From Germany (South/West). Take the ICE (Cologne, D'dorf, D'burg, Oberhausen) to Arnhem. In Arnhem, change for Zwolle. In Zwolle, change for Groningen. From Germany (North). From Leer, take a train to Groningen via Nieuweschans. BY CAR From the west (Amsterdam/Rotterdam): From Amsterdam Airport, take the A4 to Amsterdam, and then the A10 to Diemen. Ath the junction Diemen-Noord, turn onto the A1 to Amersfoort. From Amersfoort, take the A28 to Zwolle (Groningen may already be on the sign as well). The A28 will lead you to Groningen (ca. 2 1/2 hours, depending on traffic flow). From Rotterdam: take the A20 to Gouda and then the A12 to Utrecht. At the Lunetten junction, go north on the A27 for a short while and then take the A28 to Amersfoort. Follow the A28 to Groningen. From the south (Belgium): From Brussels, it should take about 4 hours to get to Groningen. Assen is on the same route. Take the A12 or the A1 to Antwerp, then go north via the A1 to Breda (Nl). At the Galder junction, change unto the A27 to Utrecht. In Utrecht, at the Rijnsweerd junction, take the A28 to Amersfoort and Zwolle (Groningen may already be listed too). This will lead you to Groningen. For travellers to Assen: Assen is between Zwolle and Groningen; take the Assen-Zuid junction on the A28. After leaving the A28 (Assen-Zuid), go straight on until the T-junction (with traffic lights). Turn right, and get in lane to turn left at the next junction (traffic lights again). You are now in the Beilerstraat. Follow this street (careful, speed limit 30 km/h, occasional radar checks) for a while until you arrive at a crossing (restaurant in front of you). Turn right (oddly enough, this is still the Beilerstraat) and follow this street until the next crossroads (it bends to the left), where you turn right unto the Zuidersingel. Take the second street on your right (this should be the Oosterhoutstraat), and then the first street right again (Wilhelminastraat). The second building on your left, middle house (nr. 3) is where you want to be. From the southeast (Germany): Coming from the Ruhr-area, take the A3 from Oberhausen to Arnhem (Arnheim). In Holland, this is the A12. On the A12, follow the directions for Apeldoorn/Zwolle. Take the A50 to Zwolle. In Zwolle, turn onto the A28 in the direction Groningen/Hoogeveen. From the northeast (Germany): Coming from the A31 (Haren) or from the A28 (Bremen), pass Oldenburg and Leer. Turn onto the A7 (E22) at junction 14. This will bring you straight to Groningen. From Muenster, another option is to go via Enschede. The shortest route will take you over a number of B-roads, and I can post a description if anyone needs it. IN GRONINGEN DELIPLEIN and YOUTH HOSTEL To get from the station to the youth hostel or to my (my brother's) place by public transport, take the number 1 bus to Korrewegwijk (northbound). For the hostel, get off at Simplon Youth Hostel, Boterdiep (they have their own bus stop). For Deliplein 116, get off one stop further, first stop on the Korreweg (right after some fancy new shops at your right hand side). Cross the street (careful, this is -officially!- Europe's busiest cycle route), and head into the Riouwstraat (past a shop full of junk and old washing machines). Take the first street on your right (Padangstraat), and continue until Sabangplein. In the middle of this small square, you'll spot the entrance porch to Deliplein. In the porch, on your left, is Deliplein 116. The name next to the right doorbell is Nijhuis (hey, that's my name). CLEOPATRA (Saturday night session) Walking: from the station, cross the museum bridge (the museum is the strange, colourful building in the water). Take the third street on your right (very broad; Gedempte Zuiderdiep). Walking on the lefthand side, the second street to your left should be the Pelsterstraat. Turn into the Pelsterstraat and take the second street to the right: the Kleine Pelsterstraat. Cleopatra's is on your left at number 5-5a. DRIVING IN GRONINGEN Only for the strong-hearted! The city centre is famous for its "circulatieplan", which means that it's a maze of one-way streets, and going from one part of the city centre to the next can be a frustrating experience: you can spot your goal, but you're not allowed to go there... But here you go: Cleopatra's: Approaching Groningen, go straight on after the first traffic lights. Warning: radar! At the second set of lights, go straight again. Buses are allowed to drive on, you have to follow a semi-circle to the right. After completing the semi-circle, take the second street to the right. This is the Gedempte Zuiderdiep, it used to be a canal. The middle (the canal) is reserved for buses, so take the right-hand lane. Now, take the third street left (crossing the 'canal' at the cinema), into the Haddingestraat. At the end of this street, there's a parking garage on your right. This would be a good spot to park your car. Check the opening times so you can pick up your car on time (late night parking in the streets is free, then. Leaving the garage on foot, take the exit the cars would use, turn right and take the first street to your left. Cleopatra is on the left). If you decide to drive to Cleopatra's front door (dropping off stuff), skip the garage and turn right immediately, and right again. The first street on your left is the Kleine Pelsterstraat, where you want to be. Deliplein: Approaching Groningen, get in lane to turn right at the first traffic lights. You are now on the ring road, drive carefully (70), there's radar everywhere. After about 5 minutes, turn right (AZG, Korrewegwijk should be on the signs) and get in lane to turn left immediately. After turning left, follow this road (Europaweg) past the Ikea (on your right) and over the channel. Right after the channel, go straight (pick the right-hand lane of the two) in the direction Korrewegwijk. Follow this road (Petrus Campersingel) and go straight at the first traffic lights (can be turned off). At the second set of traffic lights, go straight again, over another channel, unto the the J.C. Kapteijnlaan. At the third set of traffic lights, turn left unto the Korreweg. Take the second street on your right (Riouwstraat), it is marked forbidden for cars, but only after a few metres. Then take the first street right again (Padangstraat). At the square (Sabangplein), turn left in the second lane, and then right again through an archway. This is the Deliplein. Number 116 is in the archway on your left. Paid parking! Consult a map here . |

But I shall join the gathering, even with crutches, inshallah. Wilfried |

Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 08 Apr 03 - 11:16 AM Ok, time to refresh this here thread! I just bought the train tickets, going to Papenburg on May 1st. I will cycle from there on Friday, arriving (hopefully) in Groningen some time during the afternoon... Can't give a specific time, depends too much on wind... ;-) Looking forward to seeing you all! |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 08 Apr 03 - 01:28 PM Great to hear from you MudGuard. Papenburg shouldn't be too far (even though you're an experienced biker, of course). I'm making final arrangements with a pub for the Friday night. On Sunday, we could either 'jam' at Willem's place, or try and find another pub (this pub has a session on the Sunday afternoon). The reason I didn't reserve anything for Sunday night is that it's Remembrance Day, and I'm not sure if pubs are open, or if they'd like music being played. As long as we observe silence at 8PM, this shouldn't be a problem at my brother's place. The band I play in will come too! So, an updated list looks like this: Anne (Germany) Eric the Viking (UK) Frank & Iris (Germany) Glen and Ron (UK/Belgium) Llanfair & sister (UK) Mooman & Lady McMoo (UK/Belgium) Mudguard (Bavaria) Skipjack (UK) Susanne (Germany) Volker (Germany) Wilfried (Germany) Wolfgang (Germany) Possibles: Fossil & co (UK) Ken Gilman (US/Belgium) McGrath (UK) Will Bakker (Netherlands) And a few assorted Dutchmen! More people = always welcome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (for the doubters: I found that B&Bs cost about 15-20E per night) Looking forward to it. Letty |

Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 09 Apr 03 - 09:35 AM Letty, do you want to hint that Bavaria is not Germany? Erik, wind shouldn't be a big problem, I have an aerodynamic belly ;-) |

Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 14 Apr 03 - 06:18 AM Hi Letty, I'm planning my arrangements for Groningen now. Unfortunately I have to do a guided tour through my home town in Friday's late morning, which brings me the money for the youth hostel. So I'll arrive at 21:15 (=9:15 p.m.). I'll first go to the hostel for checking in and then I'll join you. Can you advertise me to the hostel people in advance? I need a bed in the dorm and hired bedlinen. An absolute must: I need a notice from you where the Friday gathering will take place. By the way, where in Germany are you staying before the Weekend? Eager to meet you all Wilfried |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 14 Apr 03 - 11:03 AM Wilfried: I live in Bochum. The place where we're going to be on Friday night, will probably be Sally O'Brien's , but I haven't heard from them yet. I will post that as soon as possible. I don't know what you mean by 'advertising' you to the hostel... Do you mean you need to confirm your reservation? You could send them an e-mail (they have international staff, so they read English (and possibly German too)) at simplon-jongerenhotel@xs4all.nl or phone them at 0031-50-3135221. Letty |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 14 Apr 03 - 11:05 AM Wilfried: I just realized after re-reading that you haven't made a reservation yet. I could phone them for you, if you prefer, but they will need your details (address etc.), could you PM them to me? |

Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 15 Apr 03 - 05:29 PM 25 pound for a return ticket... that's cheaper than going from Groningen to Amsterdam by train (and back). Night! |

Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 16 Apr 03 - 07:03 AM Hi, Mudguard! Haematome is receding fast. Changed from the crutches to a solid walking stick and am working again since Monday. Made my reservations in the jongerenhotel today, hope they won't kick me out when they see how old I am. For May 1st I wish you a good steady wind from Eastern directions. Wilfried |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 16 Apr 03 - 09:11 AM Wilfried, that sounds good, keep on getting better! The wind on May 1st does not matter, I am travelling on the train on the 1st. The May 2nd is the wind-like important day... ;-) See you soon! Andy/MudGuard |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 18 Apr 03 - 03:08 AM Only two weeks!!! |

Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 19 Apr 03 - 09:55 AM Thanks, Mudguard, for the countdown. You seem as eager as me to meet the other blokes and blokesses of the great Multinational Union Dedicated to the Celebration of Ancient Tunes. You should have posted the countdown yesterday, man! So I lost a 40% price reduction of my Netherlandish train fare, but could gain the national reduction still today when booking. I nourish the suspicion that in counting the days you are exerting an unalienable human right you are entitled to: THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. Oh yeah, Im sure we'll find it. Eager to meet you all! Wilfried |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 19 Apr 03 - 10:52 AM I DID post the countdown yesterday. And yes I am eager to meet the people there - some of them again, some for the first time... Your Mudcat definition is a nice one! Just a tiny thing: MudGuard with a capital "G"... (Mud from Mudcat, Guard from my surname Waechter) still 13 days... |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 21 Apr 03 - 01:25 AM 11 days |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Eric the Viking Date: 21 Apr 03 - 08:00 PM OK-not long to go now. Letty, some questions. 1) Our return fare from Schipol is e36.20. How long does a return ticket last?1-4 days or more or less? Or do we have to buy single tickets? (one way)We would prefer to buy a return as it's much cheaper but it would need to be from the Friday to the Monday evening, as we leave 21.15 Also is there a tourist reduction? (Reductions is e21.70) Train times-we should get the 21.23 from Schipol, arriving at 23.54 at Groningen. Where will everyone be at this time? Or do we go straight to Deliplein? If we are very lucky we could make the 20.53, change at Amersfort, arrive at 23.15 (But not very likely) Richard as an alternative, if your offer still stands (but only if convenient-I'd want to get there sooner if I were you! It is 227 Km by rail from Schipol to Groningen) We land at 20.35. (But that's only dependant on plane being on time)It would make you and Pat very late arriving.About a good three-four hour drive I'd guess. Much longer by bicycle from Europort!! I think we cycled it in 5 days with the children last time we cycled up that way-Don't cycle like Andy!! Last question, Where is the guitar shop? Oh and Skip will want a coffee shop-but I'll get him to AH. See you all soon |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 22 Apr 03 - 07:23 AM More questions for Letty: Arriving at Willem's place (Deliplein 116), which doorbell is the one to press? I guess I will arrive early afternoon (13:00 - 14:00). Is someone at Willem's place at that time? Or should I meet you or Willem somewhere else? 10 days... |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 22 Apr 03 - 10:59 AM Oh, oh - the driving engineers of the German Railway are threatening with a strike just about the next week(s). Let's hope the best for the timetables. Wilfried |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: mooman Date: 22 Apr 03 - 11:21 AM Dear Eric, I planned be "on route" somewhat earlier (and via a slightly different route) than your estimated arrival time in order to avoid traffic but could revise plans if you're really stuck. All the best Richard |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 22 Apr 03 - 12:59 PM Richard, did you get my PM? |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 22 Apr 03 - 01:00 PM And yes, Wilfried, I fear they will be on strike on the first of May (which is Labour Day in Germany)... Andreas/MudGuard |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 22 Apr 03 - 04:11 PM hi there! Loads of questions... I'll try to answer a few now: I'm planning to be in the pub on Friday night, but perhaps everyone's tired and gone bij the time Skip and Eric are arriving... You know what? I'll collect you from the train station in Groningen (I have scribbled down my mobile phone number somewhere in this thread, if you're early/late you can call me) and bring you to wherever you are. Wilfried: I hope you won't have to hitch-hike from Germany... But strikes are out of my control of course. MudGuard: in the afternoon, I'll be on the Deliplein 116, the name on the door is L. Nijhuis (that's me). Train tickets: a weekend return would be cheaper, but that's only valid from Friday night through Sunday. So, buy a normal return ticket (open return). Still less expensive than two single fares! Dutch rail is really stingy, only way to get a discount is to hitch a ride with a student (students and two companions per student get a 40 % discount), but you have to chat a student up first :-) So you're right, return should set you back about 36Euro. Driving from Schiphol Airport to Groningen takes about 3 hours. Guitar shop: two of them in the Nieuwe Ebbingestraat, around the corner from Willem's house (well, walkable in any case). Coffee: available in every supermarket, not just coffeeshops (there is a real coffee shop, i.e. selling coffee, in the Zwanestraat). Soft drugs are available too (though not in supermarkets), though you need proof you're over 18. Actually, there's a coffee shop about 50 yards from where you're staying. And Willem used to have a neighbour who baked spacecakes, but she's moved. Maybe she left a receipe! BTW, if you're serious about getting high in Holland, don't ask me, I don't even smoke normal cigarettes. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Eric the Viking Date: 23 Apr 03 - 07:44 AM Thankyou Letty-you confirmed what I'd already worked out. We'll be on the train. You kind offer of a lift is gratefully recieved, I have printed out all the details etc. Richard-it is no problem. I figured that it would make you and Pat very late ariving, as I said. But thankyou for your kind and generous offer (For those who don't know Richard-it is typical of his warm and kind nature) By the way. IT WILL BE RICHARD'S BIRTHDAY THE WEEKEND OF THE GATHERING. so see you soon. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Eric the Viking Date: 23 Apr 03 - 12:34 PM And the weather forecast for Friday 2nd Mai is......... Showers but quite warm. Lets hope for a sunny weekend. Letty, to mobile phone you I will need 0031 drop the 0 before the 6 is that right? Though my phone will switch to local (can't remember which company). Who is asking about the drugs? |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 23 Apr 03 - 01:12 PM Letty, thanks for the answers. Erik, how often is the weather forecast correct for the next day? Do you really trust it for 9 days??? 9 days only! Andreas/MudGuard |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Apr 03 - 01:27 PM Can't make it. It sounds like it'd be well worth the trip. Ah well. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Wolfgang Date: 23 Apr 03 - 01:51 PM Maybe we should make the next Mudcat meeting of this type In Britain? It started as a German Mudcat meeting (with more English speaking than Germans attending) then moved to the neighbouring countries like Belgium and the Netherlands. So maybe a part of England closest to (or fairly close to) Germany could be the next choice. Hull Wolfgang Hell (I had many years the line 'from Hull and Halifax and Hell, Good Lord, deliver me' at my door as a treat for the students) |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Skipjack K8 Date: 23 Apr 03 - 02:39 PM Wolfgang, my good friend, look forward to Letty's keynote address.......... Looking forward greatly to seeing my EuroCatChums, and watching Moore get curiously younger. I think he is taking jOhn's therapy of Pot Noodle and John Smiths as his elixir of life. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: mooman Date: 23 Apr 03 - 06:23 PM My dear Skippy, That very kind remark definitely wins you a pint! Looking forward to seeing everybody! Richard |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Susanne (skw) Date: 23 Apr 03 - 07:01 PM hi Greg and Eric - had a great comment on Letty's suggestions last night but unfortunately fell asleep before I could post it, so you're safe! Looking forward to seeing you both. As to next year, why not combine it with Selby? Seeing I'm going to miss that by a hair's breadth this year, I'd love to go, and Hell - sorry, Hull, is fairly easy to reach. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: alanww Date: 23 Apr 03 - 09:45 PM Discussing next year already ... and the Euro event hasn't happened yet ...? By all means think of combining a 2004 Gathering with the Yorkshire Gathering but the only reason I felt that I couldn't make it this year was the fact that it clashed with the Upton Folk Festival, at which the Shellback Chorus are singing. So if another Euro Gathering is planned for 2004, please try to ensure it doesn't clash with a major UFK festival ... Anyway have fun, enjoy yourselves and I look forward to seeing you all again soon ... "As I was a-walking down by the sea shore ...!" Alan |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Eric the Viking Date: 24 Apr 03 - 11:54 AM As my friend Skipjack says....await Letty's opening address with interest. Andy....It will rain on Saturday too. (I'm not bothered about the weather really, cycle all day in the wet some days, just keeping info up to date)But last year it rained from the moment Richard picked us up, to the morning of departure>> Bill and I had very soggy smokes!! By the way Richard..Skipjack already holds the pints in waiting from Ireland!! Susanne.. I await your suggestions with eagerness. Greg and I are always open to suggestions!!!! (Except bugger off and go away) Not long now. This time next week, everything should be packed! |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Eric the Viking Date: 25 Apr 03 - 07:21 AM 7 days to go, and the weather for Sunday, is cloudy with sun and showers. (I only write this because my Dutch friends think we (The English) are obsessed with the weather. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 25 Apr 03 - 07:47 AM Well, they did say that Easter was going to be awful. And, unless you consider sunny weather with temperatures to 24C awful, that wasn't true. So, don't count on the weather forecast! |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 25 Apr 03 - 08:11 AM 24C? Thats awfully hot ;-) |

Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 27 Apr 03 - 07:13 AM 5 days only... |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 27 Apr 03 - 01:39 PM Just a quick question: Who will be in Groningen before 21h and eating there? I'm going to make reservations for Sally O'Brien's. They promised us we could make music afterwards, and it's a pub too, so people who are later (Skip and Eric, e.g.) could then join us. The restaurant, which serves simple pub food, wants to know how many are actually coming for dinner (kitchen closes at 21h). Letty |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 27 Apr 03 - 01:45 PM Another news flash: My mother has kindly offered to serve brunch on the Sunday morning, so we could all get together before (some of us) say goodbye. I can take people to Assen in the car, and so can a few others, so no travel expenses there. In the afternoon (and possibly evening), we could either play in the house, or in the Irish pub in town! So, besides indicating whether you will have dinner in the restaurant on the Friday, could you also tell me if you would like to come on Sunday? Letty (getting excited) |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 27 Apr 03 - 02:07 PM Letty, I will definitely be there before 21h and would like to have dinner there! About 20km to Assen? ok, a bit far for a quick ride on the bike... As I said before, I would like to stay till Monday morning... Did I say thank-you for all your organizing? If so: I repeat it! If not: a big thank you! |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Noreen Date: 27 Apr 03 - 02:19 PM Yes, thank you, Letty, for all the organising, even though I won't be able to partake. Hope the traditional standard of restaurants at EuroGatherings is maintained... *grin* Make sure there are lots of photos please. xx |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Eric the Viking Date: 27 Apr 03 - 02:31 PM On behalf of Greg and myself. Thankyou for your kind offer. If Greg is in a suitable state, he'd love to come for brunch-I'll get him awake!!!! And a session in Assen sound fine to me.Count us in. Please thank your mother in advance for the kindness-she must be brave!!!Is she doing uitsmijter's? Will we be able to get back to your brothers flat ok for Sunday evening. What is happening then?-more music? |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 27 Apr 03 - 02:42 PM Eric, what is uitsmijter? Eric, I can help you get Greg awake... And yes, a big thank you in advance to Letty'S mother from me as well. Eric, we will do some music on Sunday night! If noone else does, at least you and me... ;-) |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Susanne (skw) Date: 27 Apr 03 - 05:22 PM Letty, have printed out all relevant info now. Hopefully, I (and possibly Wolfgang, whom I'm hoping to pick up en route) will be arriving some time before 8pm, so we might actually be in time for dinner! Two more questions: You say there is 'paid parking' in Deliplein. What does this mean for me? I need a parking space for two nights. When you've finalised the booking for Friday night, could you please post how to get there from Deliplein on foot? After your warnings, I don't feel like taking the car into Groningen any farther than I must! Oh, and at what time will you be starting out for the pub? Maybe we'll catch you at home yet. See you all soon! |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Susanne (skw) Date: 27 Apr 03 - 05:40 PM Oops - posted that before reading any new posts. Yes, I think we'll be there before 9pm, and yes, I at least would be more than happy to try Mrs Nijhuis' brunch! I could even give three people a lift (two, if one of them is Andreas, with or without bike ...). Many thanks to your mother, Letty! What gifts could we bring her as a thank you? |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Eric the Viking Date: 27 Apr 03 - 06:00 PM Andy an Uitsmijter is big ham and egg sandwiches (well not exactly,) but similar. Two fried eggs on a slice of ham-often on a thick slice of toasted farm bread, with pickles. Delicious.Greg and I are staying until Monday afternoon before we head out for the airport, so there's good times to be had. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: mooman Date: 27 Apr 03 - 06:09 PM Dear Letty, I expect to be in Grongingen by or before 21h00 Best regards, Richard |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Letty Date: 27 Apr 03 - 07:07 PM To answer a few questions: Yes, we will be able to travel back and forth between Groningen and Assen, and yes, I know some of you are staying on 'till Monday! Sunday night session: some time after 20 shouldn't be a problem, I think (Remembrance Day, so memorial services around 20 with 2 minutes silence). Oh, for those who you who will skip the brunch: Sunday is also 'koopzondag' in Groningen, which means the shops will be open (they usually aren't on a Sunday). Susanne: paid parking at Willem's place means that you have to pay obscene amounts of money to park there, plus there's a maximum stay. But a few streets further, parking's free. That's where you can spend the night. I could give you directions, do you need them beforehand or do you think you'll catch us at the Deliplein? I'll book for 19.30h, so we'll be leaving there at about 19h. The Friday night restaurant is upstairs in the pub! Address: Oosterstraat 33. I'll repost all relevant information tomorrow night, so that you've got everything handy! Goodnight, Letty (sleepy) |

URGENT To enhance my imagination: in which size do you prefer to wear your T-shirts? And oh, I'm so excited! Only four days to go to this wonderful fish, de European gat hering! Wilfried |

Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Eric the Viking Date: 28 Apr 03 - 07:30 PM So, the hour is almost upon us! Will some one be starting a Eurogathering thread as it happens? Susanne-I get your reference to chatting up students now after re-reading the thread!! I'll get Greg onto it. URGENT NOTICE...anyone good at doing pony tails? Letty is there anything particularly(smallish) that your mother would like from England as a gift for her hospitality? Oh well, 00.30hrs again. Goodnight! |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Susanne (skw) Date: 28 Apr 03 - 08:17 PM Letty, directions beforehand would be nice as I gather not even short-stay parking is free. We definitely won't be arriving at 7pm. I'm picking up Wolfgang at Oldenburg station at 6.30. From there to Groningen it will take 1 1/2 to 2 hours, I suppose, and we'll have to find Wolfgang's hotel. (Or maybe we can do that after dinner. Is it safe to leave stuff in the car?) Richard, don't spoil the boy! If he wants Belgian coins he can go cycling there! :-) And my regards to Lady McMoo! 3 1/2 days to go! |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: GUEST,Letty (no cookie, at work) Date: 29 Apr 03 - 04:44 AM Just a quick message... I'll be adding more (plus reposting all directions) tonight, promise! As for a present for my mother from England...if you could find the type of chocolate biscuits called Toffypops, you'd make her a very happy woman. We used to eat them on our holidays in Britain (well, devour them would be a better term). Skip and Eric: I can bring two mats and sleeping bags plus pillows for you, interested? Saves you luggage on the plane. Andy, I can bring a mat for you too (2m20), just give a shout. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: GUEST,Letty (still procrastinating Date: 29 Apr 03 - 04:48 AM We can definitely start a new thread when the gathering is in full swing, my brother has cable internet at home! |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: mooman Date: 29 Apr 03 - 04:48 AM Dear Eric, I could offer Letty's mum The Good Lady who is quite smallish! Oh dear...did I say that! Richard |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Fossil Date: 29 Apr 03 - 05:58 AM Hi, y'all and sorry, but due to the impending arrival of wife's relatives from New Zealand, we (the Fossils) are not able to join you in Groningen this year. Bummer, as I was very much looking forward to it and was even making mad plans to sail there. Oh well, everyone else will have a good time, I'm sure, so post the impressions as you go along. Best wishes to all. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: MudGuard Date: 29 Apr 03 - 06:56 AM Letty, if you really could bring a mat for me that would be great. I intended to sleep without - as I would only need it in Groningen, and it is a big piece of equipment I wouldn't want to carry on the bike for a week. So I gladly take your offer! Here is the shout: SHOUT! Eric, I am quite good at cutting off Pony tails... 3 days! |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: Llanfair Date: 29 Apr 03 - 07:12 AM It looks like I won't be able to join you, and I'm REALLY PEEVED!!!! Have a wonderful weekend, I'll be thinking of you all. Cheers, Bron. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: EtV@work Date: 29 Apr 03 - 10:56 AM Thankyou Letty. I am sure Greg would take you up on the offer of a sleeping bag, pillow and mat, as will I. Please don't start him off,by offering to join them together!!!!!!! It will save luggage space. Chocolate toffypops. I don't know those, but will try my hardest. Andy.....careful man, small I might be, but beserker I can also be, no entry to Valhalla without the pony tail!!!!!!!!! Richard, how could you say that about Pat. You'd be much better swapping her off for a guitar or other instrument than just giving her away. Think first!! Bron, sorry you are not coming, will catch up with you...possibly October ish? Not long now............. |
Subject: RE: GRONINGEN meeting 2-4 May: the follow-up From: EtV@work Date: 29 Apr 03 - 10:58 AM Richard, as you are driving up, does that mean you'll be bringing the Docherty mandolla as well as banjo, mandolin and guitar? |
