Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Ted Date: 21 Dec 06 - 09:15 AM Thanks also to John & Debs. With John's sort of write-up, I'll have to look in next year sometime. Thanks, and all of you have a good time over Xmas Ted |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dipsodeb Date: 21 Dec 06 - 08:43 AM Please go along and see for yourself Ted. If you're not into PA then the singaround nights are just the ticket. You never know what's going to turn up. Last night a new duo turned up who played some fantastic traditional Bretton/Irish tunes, one of the guys miked up a Kalimba it might sound strange but it was very beautiful accompanied by some very fine pipes. They apparently also have a accordion player who was absent last night, but they have been booked for next year March/April? Hope to see you there sometime. ~Debs~ |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: The Barden of England Date: 21 Dec 06 - 06:19 AM Yes, it's a fabulous setting with some very friendly regulars. I recommend it highly. John Barden |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Ted Date: 21 Dec 06 - 04:31 AM Thanks, Girl Friday, sounds good, will have to try them sometime soon. Anyone else been there? Ted |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Girl Friday without cookie Date: 17 Dec 06 - 05:57 PM Hi Ted, welcome to South East London. They only have a p.a. setup on alternate weeks. Next Wednesday is p.a. night. They have the occasional guest on a p.a. night, but the other week they have a singaround. It's a big and well attended club, so don't expect to get more than two songs in. They are quite eclectic in the range of stuff they play/sing, so, give it a try, nothing ventured eh... |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Ted Date: 15 Dec 06 - 07:20 AM Hi, Have just moved into the South London area & thought about paying this club a visit. I like the website (& venue!), and they've booked some good acts recently. Been around for a while, too, which is always good. Only thing that worries me is they seem to rely on PA a lot. I'm no purist, but have got fed up with being deafened by distorted noise. I see from earlier in this thread that their resident sound engineer (presumably) upset "Guest Folkman". So, anyone been there & can give some unbiased comments? Thanks, Ted |

Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Richard Bridge Date: 11 Dec 06 - 04:41 PM Jeff has asked me to find out if Folkmob is nosmo King or not, 'cos it's a bit of a bugger for him to have to trot down the stairs and out to have a snout.... |

I made the wort last night and threw the yeast this morning. It will be a dark porter-style beer, with original gravity of 1.050 for which I shall propose the name of "Knockholt Knockout". Linda and I are planning to hold one of our folk barbecues two weeks earlier on Sun 8th June. Any beer left over will be re-freshed and donated to Knockholt. |

Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Sliding Down The Bannister At My Auntie's House Date: 15 Mar 03 - 04:02 AM Blimey Dave! Sounds like a great club. Only one downer though, I've heard that the mad melodeon maniac sometimes turns up! |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Sid The Snake Date: 14 Mar 03 - 11:04 AM Sounds Cool To Me |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Dave Date: 12 Mar 03 - 07:19 PM Sorry about that - I really cannot understand some of the comments on this thread. Tonight some great acts had the opportunity to play at the Tudor Barn -including Vicky who has just released her CD, Bill who has given me the chance to listen to and take in some great new and old songs - Pipper and Matthew who are young and gifted singer/songwriters - Keith who has supported the club for longer than I can remember and who is another gifted songwriter- Brian - another talented artist who plays at numerous local clubs - Kevin - a good singer who somehow gets everyone to join in the chorus - and Mike a newcomer who stayed to the end and asked for details as he wants to revisit. Not to forget Paul on the sax - a superb instrumentalist. There were also those there who could not play since the list was full. Please come along one Wednesday and make your own mind up. You will be very welcome. |

Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Charles atlas Date: 12 Mar 03 - 06:44 PM I have to agree with Dave. Could the "guest" with no name who posted on this thread on 11th of march (crap place etc) own up? - 'cos I'm getting blamed for it! |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant Date: 12 Mar 03 - 12:05 PM The question is not so much why does a folk club have a sound man as why does a folk club have a sound system. An unmanaged PA is the worst option of all ! During the 60s and for most of the 70s, Folk Clubs did not need to use sound systems. Occasionally a guest act would bring one with them, but that tended to be the exception rather than the rule. In some large venues (eg Dartford Folk Club amplification is neccessary, but in many others a bit of sensible arrangement makes it perfectly possible to manage without. One of the problems with amplification is that it tends to create a barrier between performer and audience and inhibits audience participation - Linda and I got some strange looks from people, when we joined in with choruses at Dartford recently - even though the guest, Vin Garbutt, had asked everyone to join in. I recently organised a comemorative concert in The Tudor Barn and we decided to do it without the PA. We had a wonderful evening with great chorus singing and none of the performers had any problem getting their songs over, because there was a lot less background noise. |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,Woodsie Date: 12 Mar 03 - 10:33 AM That "guest" definitely wasn't me! Mind you - I have to agree with JohnB why does a folk club have a sound man? A yamaha is a guitar FG180 is just the catalogue no. for that paticular model. Be good to see you down there JohnB! |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dipsodeb Date: 12 Mar 03 - 06:25 AM Guest NAFF OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST,John B Date: 11 Mar 03 - 03:26 PM Having read Guest comments I cannot wait to go and see what it is like. Nothing can be that bad - Why do they want a sound man in a folk club?. Anyway I shall perhaps go down tomorrow just to see if he or she is right. I do not know much about guitars - Is a Yamaha a guitar - What does FG 180 stand for? |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: GUEST Date: 11 Mar 03 - 12:34 PM I hate that place, been a few times, it's always bloody cold the soundman is crap, the guy who runs it, dave kiddingham is a wopsy and all people do is talk through all the acts, if you can call them acts. Its a crap place with crap people. So there, thats my pennies worth. guest |
Subject: RE: FOLKMOB From: Dave Bryant Date: 11 Mar 03 - 05:38 AM Ian Petrie sold me my old Yamaha FG180 guitar - but don't hold that against him ! |
