Subject: BS: Munsterr Rugby ~ Thank you From: GUEST,Mikey joe Date: 20 Jan 03 - 06:36 AM Thank you to all the great men that lifted a whole province last saturday against the odds and showed what power and strnegth there is in self belief. I'm reminded of the words of Tommy Sands " I stood with my son Fionan watching with admiration and wonder as the county team trained for the All Ireland. Faster and faster they ran, panting, sweating, shouting encouragement to each other, up the side of the Mournes. I couldn't help but admire the great force that motivated them and drove them upwards towards the Mount Olympus called Cloch Mor. In a sense, they seemed to be suffering for the very hills and valleys they would represent with such pride in Croke Park. Later when they would return in triumph to their home village and county with the Sam Maguire Cup, those same hills would cheer without ceasing. Dedicated to all the great sportsmen and women who reach for the sky and bring the rest of us with them. (From 'The Heart's A Wonder' 1995)

Subject: RE: BS: Munsterr Rugby ~ Thank you From: GUEST,Mikey joe Date: 21 Jan 03 - 06:06 AM A very debatable point Hrothgar. It is a shame that this side has not lifted a european title. Agreed as a benchmark of sucess beating the All Blacks is as good as you'll get. But it is a different game now. I think it is always difficult to compare sporting teams from different eras. It would be interesting to see the 78 team at their peak play the current side at their peak. Mj |
Subject: RE: BS: Munsterr Rugby ~ Thank you From: Hrothgar Date: 21 Jan 03 - 06:17 AM That 1978 side had an advantage, though. They were all crazy. |
Subject: RE: BS: Munsterr Rugby ~ Thank you From: GUEST,Mikey joe Date: 21 Jan 03 - 06:33 AM I agree its all diets now, no one like Moss Keane (The original Keane) to sink 16 pints after a match. and go to training that evening.... BTW I am not for a second comparing Gloucester with the All Blacks in saying that the current side are up there with 78. |
Subject: RE: BS: Munsterr Rugby ~ Thank you From: sian, west wales Date: 21 Jan 03 - 06:41 AM A friend and I decided to take the train down to Cardiff for day shopping last year. Just our luck to hit the day that (if I remember correctly?) Munster was playing someone-or-other (not important: English) in the Heineken Cup in Cardiff's Millenium Stadium. Ended up standing all the way there, and most of the way back. (We're on the line that connects with the Irish ferries.) Boy, what a nice crowd! Real family affair. Don't remember who won ... sian (finding it hard to believe that she's contributing to a sports thread!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Munsterr Rugby ~ Thank you From: ard mhacha Date: 21 Jan 03 - 01:17 PM I was very lucky to see three great Rugby games over the weekend. Ulster were excellent in beating the English league leaders Northampton, Munster doing the almost impossible having to win by 27 points and with O`Garas last kick flying between the sticks acheving it, and Leinsters magnificent win against a battling Bristol side. Soccer is really a poor relation when it comes to entertainment. Well done lads. Ard Mhacha. |
