Apart from visiting the odd pub ... I attended a black tie event this past weekend in Barnsley (with a drinking club with a running problem) and heard a folk song that has been bastardized into some form of dance song at discos ... not really looking for lyrics but wondering what's the story behind that song ... summat about "Gone to Join the Circus ..."

Cheers and Ayup,

Brian/Wotcha

I haven't found a link; but I recall a song (maybe not the one you had in mind) with a similar line. It may have been a flip side to a Del Shannon single. Some of the lyrics were:

Goodbye cruel world, I'm off to join the circus
Say, Mr. Barnum, (won't you) save a place for me?
Shoot me out of a canon; I don't care.
Let the people point at me and stare.
I'll tell the world that woman,
Wherever she may be,
That mean fickle woman
Made a flying clown out of me.

Allan, that seems to ring the bell, although the British version (about 10 years old now I was told) has a frenetic dance piece to it but a very folky intro and I want to say the band was something like the Electric Mouse Band ...

Still curious,

Cheers,

Brian

Subject: Lyr Add: GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD (from James Darren)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 15 Feb 03 - 12:05 PM

Copied from Leo's Lyrics:

GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD
James Darren
Words and Music by Gloria Shayne

-as sung on "The Best Of James Darren"
-Rhino Records R2 71664
-peak Billboard position # 3 in 1961

NOTE: Calliope sounds were vocals by writer Shayne!!

(Goodbye cruel world)
(Goodbye cruel world)

Oh, goodbye cruel world, I'm off to join the circus
Gonna be a broken-hearted clown
Paint my face with a good-for-nothin' smile
'Cause a mean, fickle woman turned my whole world upside down

(Goodbye cruel world)

Farewell to love, I'm off to join the circus
Gotta find a way to hide my tears
Bet I'll have them rolling in the aisle
And I'll forget that woman if it takes a hundred years

Oh oh oh, step right up and take a look at a fool
He's got a heart as stubborn as a mule
C'mon everybody, he's good for a laugh
And no one could tell his heart is broken in half

Well, the joke's on me, I'm off to join the circus
Oh, Mr. Barnum, save a place for me
Shoot me out of a cannon, I don't care
Let the people point at me and stare
I'll tell the world that woman, wherever she may be
That mean, fickle woman made a cryin' clown outta me

(Goodbye cruel world)

Shoot me out of a cannon, I don't care
Let the people point at me and stare
I'll tell the world that woman, wherever she may be
That mean, fickle woman made a cryin' clown outta me

Goodbye cruel world

Goodbye cruel world
FADE

Goodbye cruel world

Goodbye cruel world

This had the most wonderfull instrumental bit in it, and I can only describe it as.
Dip dip dip dip, dip dip dip, Goodbye cruel world.
We always used to sing " Goodbye cruel world, I'm off to join the Ghurkas"
Silly me.....Giok

Could it be The Toy Dolls' version of Nelly The Elephant?

Subject: Lyr Add: THE KID (Buddy Mondlock)
From: BuckMulligan
Date: 15 Feb 03 - 03:55 PM

Could Wotcha Still in Yorks be after Buddy Mondlock's "The Kid?" (a fantastic song)

THE KID
Buddy Mondlock-
©1985 EMI April Music Inc. and Sparking Gap Music, ASCAP

I'm the kid who ran away with the circus
Now I'm watering elephants
But I sometimes lie awake in the sawdust
Dreaming I'm in a suit of light

Late at night in the empty big top
I'm all alone on the high wire
Look he's working without a net this time
He's a real death defier

I'm the kid who always looked out the window
Failing tests in geography
But I've seen things far beyond just the schoolyard
Distant shores of exotic lands

There're the spires of the Turkish Empire
Six months since we made landfall
Riding low with the spice of India
Through Gibraltar, we're rich men all

I'm the kid who thought we'd someday be lovers
Always held out that time would tell
Time was talking
I guess I just wasn't listening
No surprise, if you know me well

And as we're walking toward the train station
There's a whispering rainfall
Across the boulevard, you slip your hand in mine
in the distance the train calls

I'm the kid who has this habit of dreaming
Sometimes gets me in trouble too
But the truth is
I could no more stop dreaming
Than I could make them all come true
Than I could make them all come true

Without hearing the eerie music, I couldn't tell, but thanks for the lyrics.

Cheers,

Brian (Back in DC area ... for now).
