So... Who is Patty Murray, and what is she up to these days?

By the looks of this photo, she's been playing some pretty exotic gigs lately:

Just curious.

BTW, that photo looks computer-generated and probably was done by Murray's right-wing detractors.

Addressing a college audience recently, Murray said something to the effect that Osama Bin Ladin has widespread popularity among Muslims, partly because he spent $ in various countries building roads, schools, day care centers, hospitals, etc. She said that there might be a lesson for us in the US in looking at why he was followed by (loved by) so many.

The right wing talk show hosts were all over her case (surprise, surprise), calling for the Republicans to unseat her when she's up for election again (surprise, surprise), because her remarks were tantamount to treason. They talked as if she had said Bin Laden was an ideal role model or worthy of our admiration, instead of what she actually said -- that he is popular with a lot of people in the third world (which he obviously IS).

AAAaah So!

Thank you muchly; I thought that she was some sort of Folk Singer I should know about, but didn't, and was not thinking political celebrity at all, so didn't make the connection.

From where I saw this photo, (a fairly conservative web site) I would not be surprised if it is a doctored "spoof" of her, now that you mention it - but they did a really good job of it, as it sure fooled me!

As to OBL's popularity; I can remember back when the US was backing him and AlQuida when they were bucking the Soviet Union some years ago; he was made out to be some sort of a folk hero - like a cross between che Gueverra (sp?) and Robin Hood. The press gave glowing reports of how he had restored law, order, and a semblance of decency to a formerly renegade and savage culture, where women were routinely raped and Opium-running warlords constanly feuded for power, butchering hapless civilians who got in their way.

Then the Soviets went away, and we kind of forgot about Afghanistan and OBL, didn't we?

The next we heard from him he was implicated in blowing up an American Embassy or two here and there, and then the parking garage of the World Trade Centers. Despite that apparant display of ingratittude, Bill Clinton did not seem to think that OBL needed messing with, so he was left to plot and ultimately succeed in finishing the job he started in NYC, as well as score some points on the Pentagon on that infamous attack of 9/11/01.

And those pictures of women getting their brains blown out on the soccer field in Kabul for crossing the street with the wrong man (or, I suspect, saying "no" to the wrong ElQuida thug) did little to endear Mr. BinLadden to the American People, generally.

As far as all of those "roads and hospitals" etc. OBL was supposed to have provided for the People of Afghanistan, according to Sen. Murray, if there was any such infrastructure created other than to facilitate the military objectives of Elquida, I am not aware of it.

So when Sen. Murray started portraying BinLadden as a folk hero and adult role model to some American children, she may have scored some points in the People's Republic of California, and perhaps a few in her home utopia of Washington as well... but as far as most of the rest of America is concerned, it seems that she may have stepped in some deep do-doo.

I wonder if she really plays a Gibson. Does anyone know?

Thanks for your prompt illumination upon my curiosity/ignorance.
Well... she kinda LOOKS like a Folk Singer, now doesn't she?

Well, Uncle Jaque, I guess you just don't like intelligent women who don't like war, huh? You've probably memorized all the standard venomous comments about Jane Fonda, Joan Baez, and Hillary Clinton.
Probably Mother Teresa, too...

That's a funny picture! Patty Murry is a senator with "her own quiet way!" I'm not sure (and don't care) what that means though.

It's no surprise that the right wing would try to trash Patty Murray at every opportunity, because she is intelligent, well-informed, outspoken, and, in general, an "uppity woman." When the vote was taken in the Senate on whether or not to give Bush a free hand to attack Iraq, she delivered one helluva speech about why she was voting against it.

When Trent Lott crammed his foot down his own throat a short time back, I was sure the right would be casting about looking for a Democrat they could dump on to try to balance things. When Murray made her comments about "maybe they wouldn't hate us so much if America were a better neighbor," (which is pretty obviously true, by the way) they pounced on her with wild, squealing glee. Totally predictable.

The head on that photo is way too big for the body, Uncle Jacque, and shouldn't have fooled anyone. Anyone who knows anything about her knows she doesn't wear clothes like that anyway. But then, you must be pretty credulous to go along with the crap they heaved at Senator Murray over some fairly innocuous remarks. Did you bother to read what she actually said? Do you really think she was "portraying OBL as a folk hero and adult role model"?? Doesn't it embarrass you to be so ignorant reactionary?

She's a quondam soccer mom, and I'm proud to say she's one of the Senators from my utopia, too. (Note that so far all the Northwest input has been pro-Patty.)

Uncle Jaque, sounds to me like you missed the point of her comments just as completely as the talk show host types who tried to score on this. She's right on the money on this, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with being pro-Usama. (Note: the FBI says it's Usama, not Osama.)

Yes, UJ, (As far as all of those "roads and hospitals" etc. OBL was supposed to have provided for the People of Afghanistan, according to Sen. Murray, ...

It seems that you, just like Sean Hannity, Michael Reagan, and the others, are twisting Murray's words. She did NOT say OBL funded all those facilities IN AFGHANISTAN. She said he had funded them in a number of countries, including, IIRC, some in the Balkans. (Do you think, BTW, that Al Quaeda is located only in Afghanistan?)

And she no more "portray[ed] BinLadden as a folk hero and adult role model to some American children" than I would be portraying Hitler and Mussolini as such if I were to point out that both men were at one time very popular within their own countries.

As I said, the right wing Rebpublicans would like to unseat this Democrat "mom in tennis shoes" Senator -- what a shock!

Appreciating a railroad that closely approximates its published schedule does not make one a fascist, nor does mentioning the fact that people in other countries appreciate same constitute praising Mussolini. ;-)

Not a bad Gibson she's "playing"..

I'm absolutely convinced that the right wing Republicans who routinely assassinated the character of their opposition, were themselves Grand Inquisitors in a past life.

Senator Patti Murray is also MY senator. As Don said, her comments followed shortly after Senator Trent Lott stepped in deep doo doo! I predicted that the Republicans would be looking for ANY distraction they could find. I found it very interesting that the High School class she spoke to, rose to her defence, saying that she gave a reasoned and thought provoking talk. Hmmm? Reasoned and thoughtful! Hopefully that will be a new concept that might catch on! Here's to the lady in tennis shoes! CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson
