Subject: Campay Segundo From: Strupag Date: 26 Jan 03 - 03:37 PM Once again BBC4, their new digital BBC chanel came up with another wee gem. Last nigtht they broadcasted a concert of Campay Segundo, a 92 year old Cuban guitarist and singer. I was going to say "For a 92 year old, he was brilliant", but in all honesty he was brilliant irrestpective of age. His style of playing was single note, on a nylon string guitar, with leading and harmony lines interweaving with the most subtle trumpet player that I've ever heard. His singing tended to be lower harmony and the synchronicity of it all was wonderful. A great show but does anyone out in the Mudlands know about this great performer. The show was in 1998 at the Paris Olimpiad. Is he still with us? |

Subject: RE: Campay Segundo From: michaelr Date: 27 Jan 03 - 08:10 PM Strupag -- this wonderful musician is featured prominently in the film "Buena Vista Social Club", along with a slew of other Cuban greats from the 1930s and 40s. Check it out! Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Campay Segundo From: GUEST,Taunus Date: 28 Jan 03 - 03:57 PM Saw the guy playing live in Buenos Aires some two years ago. Though it was a rather "cheesy" show, one could tell he was an awesome performer and a very charismatic character too... Taunus |
Subject: RE: Campay Segundo From: Peter T. Date: 28 Jan 03 - 04:33 PM Get the album. He has two or three others, but (in my opinion) the first is the best (which could be why it sold a gazillion copies). I saw him live a year ago, and he was great. A complete ham. yours, Peter T. |
