Subject: Moorlough Shore location From: Big Tim Date: 08 Feb 03 - 04:41 PM Recently I found some information that makes me think that this great Irish song is more likely to be located on the River Foyle at Lifford/Strabane than anywhere else. 1. There is a townland there called "Murlough", on the Lifford side of the Foyle. 2. The Sinclair family once owned most of the area, their estate consisting of 5,947 acres in 1876. Locally, their house may have been called a "castle". 3. The family's address is given as "Holly Hill, Strabane". "Holly-hill" is a townland about two miles east of Strabane. This combines the three major clues in the song - "Moorlough (or, Murlough", "Sinclair", and "Holly Hill", all together in the same local area. What do you think? |
