I like Ali G! I think that most TV chat shows are a bit boring, because the interviewer keeps on asking the questions you've heard answered a thousand times before, but Ali G asks different questions and dares to be different!

Saw the commercials on TV for this last night... without having seen it, looks like crap to me. So it'll probably be a hit.

Damn, what I wouldn't give for some good old music shows like Texas Connection or American music shop oir Bobby Bare and friends or, what was the one David Holt used to host?

And ugh, how about those friggin' reality shows. I watch TV to get the hell away from reality!!!!

I do like the Sopranos a great deal though.

One of the funniest things about Ali-G is how many people take him for real! Sacha Baron Cohen (his real name) recorded in the USA because his Ali-G character was starting to become too recognisable in the UK and it was getting harder to find targets to interview.
The bullshit "street" language and persona is mocking youth culture and giving him a great guise under which to operate.

For some reason this makes me think of a character we used to have in Australia who called himself "Norman Gunston" (actually a comedian called Gary MacDonald) - a totally different kind of character of course, but he used to interview celebrities and it made for quite funny viewing, although he wasn't to everyone's taste.

I think Ali G is really funny when he is interviewing unsuspecting celebrities (and others) who think they are being interviewed seriously by some "Yoof TV" presenter. The length of time they struggle to try to answer seriously his ignorant questions. He is not particularly funny when he is just being the character - which is what he ended up doing in the UK because everyone had heard of him.

Bagpuss I agree .. the Tony Benn Interview was my favourite too ! He handled both himself and Ali very well and he quite clearly saw what was going on ... I think when he was interviewed about it afterwards he said that his Grandkids loved it ...what a man !

I suppose it's a similar thing with those goofy phone calls which everynow and then surface ... yes there should be nothing on tv 'cept soaps and shows like jerry springer etc, pop idols,re-viting of houses,qvc, big brother, blind date and as I type I can hear Anne Robinson in the background yapping on and on ...Ali you are not the weakest link ..

Watched the whole show this weekend, and chuckled a few times but I guess I just don't get it. Gimme the Simpsons anyday. I don't need highbrow humour- and a few of the quips you guys have mentioned are funny- but this is just not my cup of tea. Admittedly most American comedians are not that funny and most of our sitcoms are crap- well, more rehashed than anything, the days of originality seem as gone as cheap gasoline... but this dude, I just don't think is funny.

Then again, I didn't think Andy Kaufmann usually was either, and some folks call him a comic genius. (I used to love Python, Firesign theatre, old (pre-political) George Carlin, even the stupid adolescent drug humour of Cheech and Chong in their day... even pre-sitcome Bill Cosby was a marvelous writer, ditto Conan O'Brien... maybe that's the problem, at 41, I've lived long enough to have seen both good and bad comedians, sitcoms, cartoons, etc., and what I think is funny isn't this shite. And I still maintain the downfall of most good comedians or comic writers is either getting overtly political (hmm, same with folk musicians sometimes) or in simply gentrifiying their material in trying to please everyone.

But of course, just my opinion.

Hey Rick, I thought general consensus was Andy Kaufmann was pretty funny. I thought I was the minority! (I did enjoy some of his stuff, and especially his wrestling goofs- it was more his adlibs where he'd end up banging on drums and singing vowels for way too long that drove me up the wall.)
