Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Mark Cohen Date: 23 Feb 03 - 07:12 PM This is obviously a reference to the current U.S. President's mental capacity, and thus, as a cut-and-paste political post, doesn't belong here on Mudcat. Am I right, or what? Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Gareth Date: 23 Feb 03 - 07:12 PM Remind me not to do these quizzes after the pub closes. Gareth |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Mark Cohen Date: 23 Feb 03 - 07:13 PM PS, Guest, I got all 5. Nyaah-nyaah. |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: GUEST Date: 23 Feb 03 - 07:21 PM Well, the only I missed was the addition question! |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Mark Cohen Date: 23 Feb 03 - 07:32 PM And the counting one. [insert stupid little smiley face thing here] Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: GUEST Date: 23 Feb 03 - 07:33 PM I didn't smile, I winked. |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Cluin Date: 23 Feb 03 - 08:00 PM I got `em all. But then I've seen this thing about 10 times in my e-mail over the past 5 or 6 years. |

Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: katlaughing Date: 23 Feb 03 - 11:46 PM I think Mark's postings should be deleted, esp. since they are veiled references to weather. Plus he's just such a show-off! |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Wincing Devil Date: 23 Feb 03 - 11:53 PM Question 2: Anyone, up to and including the penultimate runner, can overtake the last person in a race, by "lapping" them. (I've had it happed to me in Navy PT!) |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 23 Feb 03 - 11:55 PM 100%
Sincerely,
BTW - Mr. MacLeod When you Pinched this from another Forum it is common courtesy to credit the source... you still have chance to go legit. |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: GUEST Date: 24 Feb 03 - 12:11 AM Backoff Gargoyle! From the >>>>> carrots it is obvious >>>>>the posting is not from a forum (what Mc could be that sophisticated?) it is a reposting of the e-mail from Cluin that he forwarded to Murray five or six years ago. |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Murray MacLeod Date: 24 Feb 03 - 03:25 PM Greg, I lifted this from the Betfair Forum, Chitchat section, the thread link is This thread . GUEST, I copied and pasted it, carats and all, (but no carrots, not sophisticated enough for that) ... Murray |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Ebbie Date: 24 Feb 03 - 04:07 PM Darn. In reading the link, I find that I had totally misunderstood the first question! I take back my dictionary definitions as being irrelevant, immaterial and inane... :^( |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Mark Cohen Date: 25 Feb 03 - 12:28 AM Murray, your carats are good as gold, not as tasty as your carrots...but your carets are sideways. A caret looks like this ^ and an angle bracket looks like this > and I'm on my way out of here. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Murray MacLeod Date: 25 Feb 03 - 03:20 AM LOL Mark, nice one ... Murray |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Mark Cohen Date: 25 Feb 03 - 04:56 AM OOOOPS....before somebody else points it out...gold is in karats and diamonds are in carats. Aloha, Mark I'm so embarrassed... |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Steve Parkes Date: 25 Feb 03 - 04:59 AM So what do you weigh carrots in? Steve |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: GUEST Date: 25 Feb 03 - 05:07 AM Can someone explain the math question please. Why is 500 wrong? Thanks |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Nigel Parsons Date: 25 Feb 03 - 05:16 AM Guest: any answer other than 4100 is wrong. The catch is that you are adding one thousand, plus forty (1040) and one thousand plus thirty (1030) and one thousand plus 20 (1020) and one thousand plus ten (1010). People adding the numbers up as they go along will often see the need when adding the last number to get to ten tens, and increase the thosands by one, rather than increasing the hundreds by one. It is interesting to see that, if a wrong answer is given, that answer is so frequently '5000' Nigel |
Subject: RE: BS: 4 'Brainteasers' From: Nigel Parsons Date: 25 Feb 03 - 05:22 AM Questions 1 & 2, as WincingDevil points out "Anyone, up to and including the penultimate runner, can overtake the last person in a race, by "lapping" them." Similarly, if you have already been 'lapped' by several runners, then overtaking them will make no difference to your relative position in the race. You will still be almost a lap behind them. Hence the 'correct' answers to 1 & 2 are both only true in certain cases. Nigel |
