Subject: BS: More Great Sloganeering! From: GUEST Date: 24 Feb 03 - 11:31 AM I don't believe the right wing media. (bumpersticker) How many lives per gallon does your SUV take? The only thing we have to fear is Bush himself. Duct and Cover. Repent and Reload. GOP: Official Party of the Apocalypse. Fermez La Bush One nation under surveillance. Who Would Jesus Bomb? Subject: RE: BS: More Great Sloganeering! From: mouldy Date: 25 Feb 03 - 03:04 AM There's a photo of Bush going the rounds (some of you may have seen it) with a close up snap of his ring finger. You can guess what's on it - the caption reads: "Frodo has failed!" Andrea |

Subject: RE: BS: More Great Sloganeering! From: Jim Dixon Date: 23 Mar 03 - 12:23 PM Here are some good ones I saw in St. Paul yesterday: (I took notes.)
Regime change starts at home. What would Mister Rogers have done? Resistance is fertile. We are creating enemies faster than we can kill them. |
Subject: RE: BS: More Great Sloganeering! From: Jim Dixon Date: 23 Mar 03 - 12:52 PM There are a few others in this old thread. And a lot more in this one. |

Subject: RE: BS: More Great Sloganeering! From: GUEST,Mars Date: 25 Mar 03 - 04:10 PM Anything war can do, peace can do better? Oh, give me a break. Peace wouldn't have made the United States. It wouldn't have given emancipation to slaves. It wouldn't have made the Republic of Texas. It wouldn't have stopped Hitler or Mussolini or Tojo. If you disagree, then please do tell us all how you think peace would have worked better in any of these situations. |
Subject: RE: BS: More Great Sloganeering! From: GUEST,Marion Date: 25 Mar 03 - 05:18 PM Seen at the International Women's Day rally: War is only a game till somebody gets hurt - Mothers for peace |
Subject: RE: BS: More Great Sloganeering! From: Bill D Date: 25 Mar 03 - 06:08 PM A much older comment on war by a mother.... In Nietzsche's "Also Sprach Zarathustra" there is a supposed 'quote' from a woman, saying..."Of course it was a just war; my son died in it." Methinks I see a bit of that attitude appearing today.... |
Subject: RE: BS: More Great Sloganeering! From: GUEST,Mars Date: 26 Mar 03 - 05:32 PM The only place where war is ever a game is in the Playstation. Maybe they were trying to be clever but I don't find it very amusing. It is pretty obvious to me that many of you have never a)served in the armed forces or b)studied the wars of history. |
Subject: RE: BS: More Great Sloganeering! From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Mar 03 - 07:05 PM Mars: You are taking this sloganeering thing way too literally. Slogans aren't meant to be 100% true in all situations, like laws of physics. They are supposed to contain just enough truth so that people can see the truth in them, if they are open-minded enough to do so. They are more like editorial cartoons than news articles or history lessons. It is only important that they be applicable to the current situation; it doesn't matter if they don't apply elsewhere. They usually exaggerate the truth. And sometimes they are meant to "preach to the choir" so to speak. At demonstrations, they are often intended more to entertain and encourage one's co-demonstrators than to convince any outsider. This is a good thing. We need entertainment and encouragement. On the whole I don't like to offend people, and that's why I don't burn the flag, for example. There are some slogans I wouldn't endorse for the same reason. But it's no use worrying too much about offending people—some people will be offended by your mere existence, for Pete's sake. |
Subject: RE: BS: More Great Sloganeering! From: Forum Lurker Date: 26 Mar 03 - 07:38 PM Mars-Peaceful resistance is usually more effective, except when the entity being resisted has no conscience whatsoever. While it is certainly the case that the various Fascists would not have been stopped by anything short of war, I think it would have worked better to gain representation in Parliament, and it was necessary to achieve legal equality for minorities (you know perfectly well that the Civil War wasn't about slavery). As far as Texas goes, what exactly was the problem so severe that only war could remedy it? |

Subject: RE: BS: More Great Sloganeering! From: GUEST,Mars Date: 27 Mar 03 - 10:21 AM Jim, you are correct. As the God of War I am just a little edgy of late. Lurker, while the CW wasn't all about slavery, it was the catalyst that brought about emancipation. As far as Texas goes - well, I do think that could have been settled a little better than it was. But the settlers of Texas apparently didn't think they could be independent by any other means. They didn't have peace protesters back then. |
