I have had a look in Digitrad and forum and have had no joy. can anyone suggest any songs or ballads. Even anything non-moral (not immoral) it's to sing at the Inishowen seminar 21st - 24th March. I have a few but it's good to fall back on a reserve.

irreverantly, the first songs to come into my mind are the one with chorus g-l-o-r-y we are s-a-v-e-d
and the Bobbed Hair (Irish version)/ Do not bob your hair girls (American version)[If we meet you could sing the Irish version and I'll sing the American one back to back!]

inishowen traditional singing weekend

Eamonn, if you're not on stage, people sing what they like at sessions, they don't usually stick to the seminar theme

Magdalene Laundry songs
one by Joni Mitchell, one by Johnny Mulhern

also in mudcat thread archives are such songs as Wexford Carol, gabhaim molta Bhríde, Don oíche úd i mBeithil
Nóirín Ní Ríain might be a good source for those sort of religious songs
can the circle be unbroken
ciorcal a' chuain
take a look at Paddy Tunney's repetoire also

there are a great variety of songs dealing in one way or another with religion and morality! (what about Shame and Scandal/"Johnny be good and Johnny be fair ..."!, funeral songs df various sorts from blues to keening, old murder ballads, the moral dilemma of Long Black Veil ... my list could be endless)

you might give a clearer idea of what sort of song "on morality and religion" you have in mind! -- what are the ones you are already thinking of?

How about "Love is Like A Magic Penny" by Malvina Reynolds.

Love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away,
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.

It's just like a magic penny,
Hold it tight and you won't have any.
Lend it, spend it and you'll have so many
They'll roll all over the floor, for

Eoin - hello there m'dear - I'll teach you all my rude songs in Portaferry at the weekend! Mind you, there's not much ballad-y about them, but they're great for singing in the back of the bus on the way home.

One of my personal faves, not immoral, just irreverant, is Methodist Pie. It's in the digitrad.

Subject: Lyr Add: JIMMY AND THE PREACHER
From: CRANKY YANKEE
Date: 25 Feb 03 - 11:55 AM

This is an original written by Donna Gibson, my Wife

JIMMY AND THE PREACHER
         i
Once I knew a preacherIn a chappel white and neat
I asked him, could he pray as well in the alley or the street?
He said , He'd never venture into that den o sin.
But if you lock your door against the Devil,
How can the Lord get in?

            (Chorus)
How can the Lord get in?
How can the Lord get in?
If you lock your door ahgainst the Devil,
How can the Lord get in?
                II
He has it in for Jimmy because Jimmy isn"t clean
Jimmy is a drinkin' man but it never made him mean.
And when he sang to ease the pain, It was a sacred thing
If you close your ears to the sound of evil
You can't hear the Angels Sing.

               (Chorus)
Can't hear the Angels Sing,
You can't hearThe Angels sing
If you close your ears to the sound of evil, you can't hear The Angels Sing.

                         III
If you'd passed that church last Sunday, You'd have heardan awful din
That preacher was demanding that The Lord should come to him.
He stormed the Gates of Heaven, But our Saviour wasn't in.
No, The Lord was down at the local pub,
Singin' harmony with Jim.
                   (Chorus)
Our Saviour wasn't in
Our Saviour wasn't in,
No, The Lord was down at the local pub
Singin' harmony with Jim

I will be down at Portaferry at the weekend to see the faces (and hear the voices) of the 'crazy gang'. I will bring my portable bath and maybe get a song or three. see you's all there!
oh! and Fibula, I might take you up on yur 'back of the bus' songs.
see you's soon and thanks for the information above.

Burke,
you have a very weird sense of humour!!
even I couldnt get into that! and I dabble in the occult!!!(only kidding)If your for Portaferry. NI. this weekend, you had better buy Eoin a stiff whiskey!! (and one for his bath)
chanter-(still a guest after four years ) s**t, with a hefty shove, I could be be talked into going myself.

actually, the question about where we'd see 'you' was for Martin who said "see you there"; I haven't heard that he's for Portaferry?
and the question for Eoin remains - can he refine his request so we have a better idea what sorts of songs of morality and religion he would like to consider singing at Inishowen.

Fill a rúin

I never did find out whether your choice of pen-name indicates that you also sing Irish-language lyrics
I didn't hear enough of you [Eoin was only at the Portaferry gathering Friday night]; I hope you will be fit and well enough for Inishowen; it's not that long away.
