I've just booked to go to Italy in late May early June with a new budget airline from Leeds. I wouldn't mind finding out if there's any trad music going on in Milan, Bergamo or Genoa around that time. Anybody know ?

Skipjack was in Italy sometime in the last year or so. He might know something.

Sorry, MC, but I found diddly going on, but I didn't look that hard. There are some links from Brendy that might be useful at

There's as much traditional music in Italy as there is in Wales or Ireland./

If you're going to be in Genoa, you could try to get in touch with these people Lachera. They're a traditional dance group at Rocca Grimalda who dance at their village Carnevale in February. However, there are quite a few musicians with the group and I'd be surprised if they don't do quite a bit of music outside the dancing bit.

The link I gave has a phone number for information.

:-)

Yes, like IanC I know about the Carnivale music which is in Feb. There must be some music going on in places like Ponte Caffaro in the summer.

Try this address: it is the site of the Folk Bulletin, a magazine that lists the venues of traditional music in Italy, mainly northern Italy; not only Italian traditional music, but performers from all over the world. They are based in Verona. I think you could write to them or phone them: http://www.evolusuoni.it/FB/. Another site is a record producer and record shop in Piemonte: http://www.felmay.it/. They have the best catalogue of Italian traditional music. Roberto

There is a festival in Genoa in early June, see www.frootsmag.com/content/festivals/europe/#italy
for details of other Italian festivals. Also Rod Stradling has written a few articles in 'froots' magazine over the last few years. I can photocopy & send/bring to you if you so desire. Also there is an article on Steve Earle in this months magazine.

Stew,
Found a Rod Stradling piece on the net about Ponte Caffaro which looks mega but I think might be next month. I might just be too early for the festival in Genoa by about a week. Doh !!!!

There's a Mudcatter who lives in Pisa. Mudcat name is Fedele. I haven't seen him around the 'Cat in a while, but you might try sending him a personal message. In order to do that, you'd need to join the Mudcat...which is quick, painless, and spam-free. Just click on the link at the top of the Forum page that says "Membership has its privileges." (Unless you're a temporarily cookieless member, in which case you know all that.) His primary interest is in songs of the labor movement, but I'm sure he has other folk connections there.

Aloha,
Mark
