Subject: RE: Chord Req: To 'Honky Tonk Girl ' by I think Hank T From: GUEST,MCP Date: 27 Feb 03 - 01:11 PM Sorcha - That's the so-called Nashville numbering system for chords 1 = tonic (C in key of C) 4 = subdominant (F in key of C) 5 = dominant (G in key of C) 57= dominant 7th (G7 in key of C) (it's a modern rendering of the equivalent Roman style I, IV, V). Each number corresponds to a chord with its root as the corresponding note of the scale, so you have:
and you can add all normal chord suffixes eg 1maj7 3m7b5 etc. (So usual triads on chord tones in a major key would be 1 2m 3m 4 5 6m 7dim eg in C: C Dm Em F G Am Bdim) The idea is to save tying the notation to a particular key and make transposition easier - the numbers stay the same whatever the key.
