After a hiatus, we're having another sea music festival on Hyde Street Pier at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, Saturday, May 3, 10am-5pm. Admission by donation. Suggested donation: $5, sliding (or ascending!) scale. Nobody turned away for lack of funds. It really is by donation :-). Performing will be:

Louis Killen, John Roberts, The Georgia Sea Island Singers, Jerry Bryant, Alasdair Fraser, Tommy Peoples, Brittany Haas, Holdstock and MacLeod, Carol Holdstock, Shay Black, Hank Cramer, Celeste Bernardo-Dunn, Richard Adrianowicz, Riggy Rackin, Oak, Ash and Thorn (Dave Swan's group), Kate Brubeck, Penny Boys, Mariide, Dogwatch Nautical Band, Skip Henderson and the Starboard Watch, Sue Schmidt, Bruce Sherman, Kai Ben-Herschel, Don Clark and Michele Delattre, Steve Canright, and park ranger Kathy Daskal (kids programs).

There'll be two stages on the pier, plus kids concerts aboard the ferry Eureka, and workshops aboard the square-riger Balclutha. That night, we'll have our monthly chantey sing aboard ship. A good opportunity for Mudcatters to gather as well. Hope to see Catters there! PM me for more info.

The shanty sings were alive and well when I was visiting the Bay Area last summer. We decided to plunk for the Holiday Inn at Fisherman's Wharf which is somewhat pricey but very convenient to what were we intersted in seeing. I wonder if the Marriot workers are still on strike; they were a musical wonder in themselves.

You might scan my old thread "Charley Noble in Frisco" or whatever I called it if you're looking for hints on what's nearby to explore or re-explore.

Mark, maybe a local Catter can put you up? My place is too small, and I won't be around much that weekend, but hopefully something will come up. Any offers for Mark? If not, the Capri Motel, which is in the Marina district, not too far from the wharf, has very reasonable rates. Another alternative is to volunteer at the fest. Then, you and your daughter can sleep aboard ship on the premises and eat at the volunteer dinner before the chantey sing. As Charley noted, the chantey sings are still going. I'm the ranger who has been leading the sings since '96. You might remember the ranger in '84, Dave Nettell. The sings on festival night are always well attended and much fun. PM me if you'd like to volunteer with the music, helping at the venues. I'll connect you with the volunteer coordinator.

Damn...it's not going to work. San Francisco is just too far from L.A. I would do it if it were during my daughter's school vacation, but a 7-8 hour drive up and back, or an expensive flight with long airport delays, is a bit too much for a weekend. Sure sounds wonderful, though. Yes, I do remember Dave Nettel. Valentine Doyle took me along to a sing on the Thayer, and Dave was the ranger. I think he sang Larry Kaplan's "Old Zeb" ("Rosie get my Sunday shoes...").   Sounded extra special on board a schooner. That was a fine time. One of these days...

Yikes, that is a long drive or flight for this one-day event. Old Zeb is one of Dave's big numbers, so it's a good bet your memory's right on that. Dave had led the monthly chantey sings from their beginnings as a park program in 1981 until he left the park in '89.

Oh what a fun time! I haven't been on the Thayer (or the Balclutha) for a good long while! I will be in Maine, visiting my sister. But I'll send my daughters and granddaughter (and possibly a grandson) as surrogates. I think that Molly (the oldest daughter) would go just to hear Shay Black.

Way back when, I used to work for the City of San Francisco's Port Authority as a Building and Grounds patrolman. It was a fantastic gig and it allowed me to get to know the Embarcadero intimately. We had been hired to place the Harbor Police. I could bicycle from my flat on Green street to the Ferry Building where our offices were. Spend the "swing" shift walking through all the piers, jawing with the street people, chuckling at the "blue skinned" tourists, shivering in shorts and tee shirts, watching the fog and listening to the horns' concert. One day a week I worked from 4 pm to 8 am, double shift. Got to watch the Embarcadero come alive each thursday morning. The job evaporated with the passage of Proposition 13.

A very late addition to the schedule is the Dead Horse Ceremony, which will take place aboard the Balclutha at 10:45am, right after the capstan demo. many, many thanks to Melani, who spent months sewing the dead horse, known as "Mr. Dead." Thanks to her good, hard, and steady volunteer work, the poor old horse is ready for the festival.

7:30pm is the time for the Mudcatters to meet and greet in the Thayer's hold, 1/2 before the chantey sing begins. Only a few more days til festival time.

Charley Noble, we'll MAKE something musical happen when you're in town.

Well, I got rained out. I got as far as Sacramento, and the driving was just too difficult. Hope you all had a good time. Chanteyranger said the weather was good all the time there was music - but it sure wasn't good on the highway between here and San Francisco. Darn.

Well, Charlie, from my own rather limited perspective--Alasdair Fraser, Brittany Haas and Tommy Peoples managed to play all my favorite tunes, one after the other. That was the set I was really waiting for, and it was worth the wait. I'm told the Georgia Sea Island Singers stole the show--I was forced by circumstance to miss their sets, but they also came to the chantey sing, and they were incredible.

I was especially pleased to see Hank Cramer, David Lovine, and Mariide, who are among my favorites--they did a kid concert together, which was fun. I also caught part of radriano's set--terrific as usual.

I heard that across the Bay in Oakland, it rained so hard there were three inches of water running in the street, but after early morning, the rain actually went around the Park, and it was downright hot at one point. I guess our "Sun Dance" must have worked.

I'm told plans are already in the works to do it again next year, so it looks like a good time was had by all. Chanteyranger can probably give you a more coherent blow-by-blow.

Home in one piece. As usual Chanteyranger put on one hell of an event. Great places to play, great acts brought together, outstanding food and drink, and a huge chantey session at the end of it all.

My only gripe is that I couldn't make it around to see everyone else who played aboard Balclutha, at the mid-pier stage, or at the entrance to the park.

We were lucky enough to appear on the mid pier stage between Holdstock and MacLoed and the Georgia Sea Island Singers. What a treat.

M'cats Radriano, RiGGy, Chanteyranger, and Melani held forth on stages and at the chantey session. It's likely that others were there and I missed them as there was so much going on.

My favorite memory of the day is the final event on the mid pier stage
where all the acts showed up to sing together. Faking harmonies and hanging out with Lou Killen and John Roberts (who annoy each other on stage like a couple of nine year olds) is as much fun as you can imagine. We were very lucky.

John Roberts has been a big influence on Oak Ash & Thorn over the years, and though the partners knew him of old, this was our first meeting. It wasn't long before we were laughing, singing, and elbowing each other in the ribs. Great guy.

It was a great day and we're lucky to have been there. Thanks to Chanteyranger and everyone who worked so hard to make this a huge success. Come see it next year. The left coast knows about chanteys too.

A non-musical highlight--the breeches buoy demonstration, featuring Mudcatter Bill R on the lines, along with several others. For those that don't know, a breeches buoy is a lifering with a pair of canvas pants sewn into it, suspended from a line (several, actually) running from the "sinking" C.A. Thayer to the beach. Volunteer coordinator Sue Schmidt (also a featured performer at the Festival) was rescued from the raging surf of Aquatic Park by climbing into the canvas pants and riding the line down to the beach. I think she made it ashore fairly dry, but they did manage to dunk a couple of volunteers who followed, to the delight of all.

It was a great Sea Music Festival this year, although every time the Georgia Sea Island Singers performed I was performing elswhere myself. I did get to see them at the Shanty Sing in the evening albeit it briefly - they had to leave fairly early. I did get to meet them and chat briefly when they arrived in San Francisco.

John Roberts is always a pleasure. He comes up with the most amazing songs. Equally amazing was the last song at the concertina workshop when Louis Killen sang "Pleasant and Delightful" to the accompaniment of five concertinas (Louis Killen, John Roberts, Celeste Bernardo, Jerry Bryant, & Riggy Rackin). New to me were Jerry Bryant and Hank Cramer. Jerry gave a lovely performance on the main stage even though the microphones were not working for roughly the first half of his set. Jerry was the shanty singer for the capstan demonstration aboard Balclutha and he has recorded a CD of songs mentioned in the O'Brien books. Hank's singing was equally good. It was a pleasure to meet both performers.

I enjoyed the "Fiddle Summit" concert with Alasdair Fraser, Tommy Peoples, and Brittany Haas very much. It was great to see Celeste Bernardo again. I can't hear "Johnny Comes Down to Hilo" without thinking of her singing it. And, of course, it's always a pleasure and an honor to sing with all the great local musicians: Dick and Carol Holdstock, Holdstock & MacLeod, Riggy Rackin, Steve Canright, Sue Schmidt, Kate Brubeck, Penny Boys, Shay Black, Oak,Ash,& Thorn, the Dogwatch Nautical Bank, Skip Henderson & the Starboard Watch, David Lovine, Jim Nelson, Kathy Daskal, Melani, Sarah.

The weather was great. It started out a very rainy day that cleared up beautifully as the festival progressed. The only downer was trudging to my car after the shanty sing to find my battery dead. Had to call the Auto Club for a jump but they actually came very quickly

I seem to remember Hank Cramer as one of the Victory Sings Songs of the Sea collective out of greater Seattle; he had a fine robust voice on their CD.

Jerry Bryant is another Maine Native and a fine songwriter, who occasionally indulges in outrageous parodies and flights of fancy.

Did did anyone lead any C. Fox Smith sea poems as songs? John Roberts is rumored to be working on some.

I didn't hear any C. Fox Smith, but there was so much going on one couldn't hear half of it. I spent a fair bit of time with John and he didn't mention any CFS songs in the works.

So there you have it. I don't know anything, didn't hear anything.

Melani, I'll keep that in mind, thanks. But it all worked out fine and I'm glad I didn't drag you away from the shanty sing. Besides, it was a shorter walk to the pay phone than it would have been going back to the Thayer. We gimps always thing of those things.

Charley, I also didn't hear of any C.F. Smith poems at the festival. I had learned "The Old Figurehead Carver" but never actually sang it at the festival. It's a poem by Rev. Hiram Cody that was set to music by Dick Swain.

And Joe, sorry you got rained out. We missed you.

I do a couple of C. Fox Smith songs, both sea and hunting, but didn't get a chance to do them at the Festival. Didn't hear anybody else do any either.Great day though, if you stayed for the sing in the evening you could get 14 hours of singing in the day! What more could you ask for?

So, you're all invited to come to the Mystic Sea Music Festival from 6/12 to 6/15, four full days of workshops, concerts, and after hours singing! Well, actually there are no music activities during the day on Thursday or Friday and no evening activity other than driving on Sunday. Anyway, rent a U-Haul and roll!

Thank you for your good words on the festival! In the ten years I've been involved with the fests at SF Maritime NHP, this was the best. From the musicians, sound crew, volunteers, food vendor, morning shipboard demos, to the break we got with the weather, everything came together. The musicians perform for less than what they would normally get, and I'm very grateful for their understanding about park budgets and all, and their commitment to our park's mission.

The day started with rain, but, fortunately, it ended before the music began. Luck was with us, in that it rained heavily in other parts of the city, and in the East bay, but refused to rain on the festival. Joe Offer unfortunately got rained out trying to get here from Sacramento.

Radriano, sorry about the scheduling conflict. I somehow missed that one when working on the schedule. The Georgia Sea Island Singers want to come back, so I promise you will be able to see them next fest.

For anyone else going to Mystic as well as Charley and myself, the Georgia Sea island Singers are booked there, and you are in for a wonderful, dynamic series of performances. They are incredible. At the evening chantey sing, they sang "Johanna and Rhody," a sea islands rowing song, and ended the first hour of the sing with "Pay Me My Money Down," which they sang for me, amidst much laughter. In the middle of the song, they pulled out their check and waved it, changing the lyrics to "You paid me, you paid me..." and backed away, as if to say "never mind." At one of their two daytime performances, they told the story of how they taught Laura Bush to do hambone at their White House performance.
