Subject: RE: Spider John Koerner venue ideas? From: Barry Finn Date: 01 Mar 03 - 07:24 PM The plough & Stars, Mass. Ave, Cambridge, Mass. Sorry, just being a little funny. That's where I used to hear him probably 30 yrs ago. He was just great then, he'd sometimes have Mr Bones (John Burriage ?, RIP) & he only seems to improve with age. When (if?) will he heading back to New England? Barry |
Subject: RE: Spider John Koerner venue ideas? From: Mark Clark Date: 01 Mar 03 - 08:10 PM Legion Arts/CSPS in Cedar Rapids, Iowa has been quite successful in attracting an audience for “folk” performers. The list of people who've done successful shows there includes Tom Paxton, Mike Seeger, Peggy Seeger and Goeff Muldaur. Scotland's Old Blind Dogs (Mar 3-4) and Irish singer Karan Casey (Mar 10) are next in the lineup. The venue includes a proper stage and tiered audience seating. CSPS is also an art gallery and clutural center and refereshments are offered at intermission. Opportunities exist to set up tables to sell CDs, tee shirts or whatever. The performer is accessible to and can mingle with the audience as he chooses. I'm not sure about seating capacity but it's usually set for 100 or so. Talk with the management to see what arrangements can be made and, by all means, talk with performers who've played there to get their impressions of the place. Cedar Rapids also boasts a large blues audience with several blues venues including 3rd Street Live, another old Czech cultural center converted into a show bar with proper stage, dance floor, bar and seating for several hundred. 3rd Street Live is where Buddy Guy and Duke Robillard play when they're in town. Cedar Rapids is home to The Linn County Blues Society an active support organization that hosts a number of blues concerts each year. The Mill, in nearby Iowa City, is a restaurant and bar that features nationally touring folk, blues, bluegrass and alternative acts. Greg Brown plays at The Mill from time to time and Art Thieme has played there as has Eddie Adcock. The number there is (319)351-9529 and booking is done by the owner, Kieth Dempster. Hoping to see Spider John soon, - Mark |

Subject: RE: Spider John Koerner venue ideas? From: fsharpdim7 Date: 04 Mar 03 - 10:45 AM Have you contacted Cindy Mangsen? At one time she was compiling a database of venues. Has Spider John been on FolkScene in LA or with SD Folk Heritage lately? It was great to see him in Chicago at the OTSFM - could you try to book him for a 12-string workshop next time? Thanks, Chris |
