Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cold Wind / 'Spy ship' theme (June Ta From: GUEST Date: 07 Jul 10 - 10:42 AM Hi.... I'm looking for a version of this music with a big instumental break in it - I has it on cassette and that's now chewed up!!! I've got a version, but it's the same as the end credits of the programme. Does anyone know where on earth I got the version with the massive instumental in the middle (it really build and gets dramatic and sounds like a film score!!) help...!!!!!! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: GUEST,Mich Date: 15 Mar 09 - 03:26 PM I actually have a copy of the single (I remember I had to order it at the time) unfortunately it is a bit 'scratchy' as I have played it to death. I'm in the process of trying to convert it to MP3 and reduce the crackles (with very limited sucess to date!) Further to earlier posts I bought the Always box set on the understanding that the track was included and was rather hacked off to discover that it was withdrawn at the last minute. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: GUEST,Ariolla Date: 10 Jan 09 - 07:46 PM I loved the 'Spy Ship' theme when I first heard it in the 80s and after attending a recent June Tabor concert took the opportunity to ask her why it was not included on any of her albums. She said she was not happy with the arrangement on the single produced by the BBC at that time. Perhaps, with the interest shown here for it, she could be persuaded to include it now on a future album in her own arrangement! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: Richard Bridge Date: 10 Jan 09 - 05:29 PM Anyone seriously interested in knowing more should PM Reinhard. Joe's Youtube Vid is now running but the song ends at 47 seconds. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: Richard Bridge Date: 10 Jan 09 - 12:03 PM I have a couple of enquiries out - for the single or for the sampler LP - to a chap whohas a large collection of vinyl obscurities including folk and related - and tape recordings of broadcasts - so let us see what surfaces. Googling the LP name appears to produce a maybe for the vinyl LP from a website. The Youtube link above appears to stop short at 47 seconds at the moment - just after "hollow mystery" - but it is clearly "holow mystery". Whether the stopping on the link is Youtube, my connection, or enemy action remains to be seen. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: Richard Bridge Date: 10 Jan 09 - 08:15 AM I have been in touch with Frank Scott at RootsnRhythm and he agrees that the track is not on the compilation he sells and should not be listed as being on it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: Phil Edwards Date: 09 Jan 09 - 03:27 PM The Youtube link above begins with the theme from the start of the programme. From that, I think it's 'hollow mystery': Now there's sorrow, grief, there's anger in the town And there's hollow mystery It doesn't include the "Remember when the wind blows cold" verse, but the name of the ship in the series was the Mary Castor. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: Reinhard Date: 08 Jan 09 - 04:14 PM A Cold Wind was kicked out of June Tabor's Always box set in the last minute and replaced by Les Barker's song Queen Cruelty. The original Always liner notes (which used to be on the Topic Records website) had a long paragraph about A Cold Wind. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: GUEST,Topic 56 Date: 08 Jan 09 - 10:12 AM Sorry Morley Man Just a senior moment should have said 45. Thought that would really have been obvious that I had made a slip. But thre you go |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: GUEST,Topic56 Date: 08 Jan 09 - 10:06 AM Have now listened to the record, unfortunately some of the words are not clear even when played at 33rpm instead of 45rpm. It is not that long a song really and I can see why it never got anywhere. Anyway her goes with what I have Cold wind blew over the sea Cold hand reached out over the icy sea And it took good men, good fishing men From their wives and families Now there's sorrow here, there's anger in the town Over this ....... mystery Remember when the wind blows cold The good men of the............. (think it could be name of ship in the drama) The fishermen who worked the sea Cold wind blew over the sea Cold hand reached out over the icy sea And it took good men, good fishing men From their wives and families (There is now a short instrumental) Now there's sorrow grief, there's anger in the town And this ............ mystery Sorry but this is the best I can do with the shortness of the song is it really worth singing it. I will be doing a seperate post for this but does any body have the words and possibly chords for You drinking men at the old number 10 written by Bernard Bowland I think. I once heard Eric Bogle singing it about 24+ years ago. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: MoorleyMan Date: 08 Jan 09 - 04:59 AM Sorry Richard, but the track definitely isn't on my copy of the Always set, so the listing on Roots&Rhythm is incorrect (as well as being alphabetically sorted, which seems strangely appropriate for the A-fixated June!). Any further info welcomed! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: Richard Bridge Date: 08 Jan 09 - 04:09 AM From the Roots&Rhythm site It's the second track listed: - ENGLAND JUNE TABOR Topic 4003 Always 쳌œ CD $53.98 Four CDs, 67 tracks, approx 4 Hours 40 mins, essential This wonderful set which includes 42 previously unreleased tracks (many songs not available by her in any other form) documents the career of one of Britain's very finest singers. It includes key tracks from all parts of her career, many live and unissued songs and collaborations with, among others, Maddy Prior, The Oyster Band, Martin Carthy, The Creative Jazz Orchestra, Nic Jones, Huw Warren and Martin Simpson. June's music is not for casual listening - she puts so much into the interpretation of the lyrics that one needs to pay attention to what she is singing in order to get the maximum out of them and what you do get out of them will send icy fingers down your spine. Occasionally the slowness of the pace and laid back arrangements can get a little ponderous, particularly in some of her 90s performances, but at her finest no one can top her. About half the songs are traditional and the rest are from the pens of songwriters like David Sudbury, Kris Kristofferson, Richard Thompson (her version of Strange Affair is simply mesmerizing), Si Kahn, Lal Waterson, Elvis Costello, Eric Bogle (her version of The Band Plays Walzting Matilda is definitive and helped introduce Eric to a worldwide audience), Bill Caddic, Les Barker and others. Set come in 6"x12" box and comes with 48 page full color booklet with historical photos, biographical essay and notes on the songs (the latter mostly by June herself). Gorgeous. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: MoorleyMan Date: 07 Jan 09 - 07:11 PM Which CD, GUEST,Topic56? I've never found one that plays at 45 rpm! (On Richard's link above it says the track was destined for the Always anthology but dropped.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: GUEST,Topic56 Date: 07 Jan 09 - 06:48 PM It was called A COLD Wind The introduction to the BBC Drama Spyship released by THE BBC in 1983 on a 45rpm CD RESL 140. Recognised it as June Tabor singing it after the first line. Got the CD in front of me and will try to copy the words of it in the next few days and post them. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 09 Mar 03 - 05:45 PM Further details, though not the song itself, can be found in the two earlier threads linked to above. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: Willa Date: 09 Mar 03 - 04:56 PM I think you're correct, gnomad, though I've not heard this song myself. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: gnomad Date: 09 Mar 03 - 02:27 PM I've a vague (and possibly eroneous) recollection of such a song being about the Gaul, a then ultra modern trawler from Hull that sank in mysterious circumstances in the 70's. Rumours were that the ship wasn't just a trawler, and that the Russians somehow were involved in her disappearance. If this is the song in question I'd hazzard a guess that Les from Hull will know more. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: Coyote Breath Date: 09 Mar 03 - 01:46 PM This isn't help but a question. What is "Spy Ship"? I am a June Tabor fan and would like to know more. Sorcha? CB |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: June Tabor 'Spy ship' theme From: Sorcha Date: 09 Mar 03 - 01:05 PM We've had several requests for this one and I'm still not having any luck. |
