My favorite column in Sing Out! Magazine is the "Songfinder." I check it as soon as the issue arrives, hoping to find that we're much better songfinders here. They've had some pretty big guns as previous Songfinders - Bob Lurtsema, Michael Cooney, Bob Blackman, Jean Kozel, Diane Petro, Holly Tannen, and Shelley Posen. It alway made me feel good to know I knew something Shelley Posen didn't, and it was nice to see that he and Holly Tannen both made use of Mudcat.

Well, the new Songfinder is a truly worthy competitor, Joe Hickerson. He has had years of experience at the Library of Congress. He did a great job on his first column, but he would have done a bit better if he had visited our thread on Julie Ann.

Another of my favorite columns is Faith Petric's "The Folk Process." You'll always find lots of Mudcatter contributions there.

...at least partly because some of us forward them to Faith, Joe.
You can too. We'll have to work pretty hard to stay in front of Joe Hickerson, tho. Figured they ran out of imitations, and so had to go with the original LOC songfinder.

And his published article "Mother Goose Versus Vice"! The only reason we librarians are seen as mild mannered is that they don't bat an eyelash, no matter *what* question we're asked. (Remind me to tell you about the cannibal question sometime)

I looked for "Mother Goose Versus Vice" with Google and found nothing. I looked for "Big Black Sausage," and I don't think I want to talk about what I found. So, could you who know of these things, please enlighten us?

Mother Goose etc. was an article in (I believe) the Journal of American Folklore. I ran across it when I was in library school (1977), looking for something else, of course.
Is that version of "Big Black Sausage" the cumulative son I think it is?

"A Big Black Sausage" is call and response chant, where one word is added at a time and the partial phrase is then repeated until complete. I won't spoil the surprise. Ask Joe. No one else could, or at least should, attempt it.
