Subject: Lyr Req: There was Peter and Andrew, James... From: GUEST,Jawbone Date: 10 Mar 03 - 06:46 AM Hi, I am searching for the words for a couple of religious songs I learned at school as a child. The first one is about the 12 apostles, it went 'There was Peter and Andrew, James and John, James the Less and his brother Jude...' and the other was about Zacheus (probably spelt wrong), it went 'Zacheus was a greedy little man, he cheated all the people in the land...' I would be very grateful if anyone can help me out, Cheers, Jawbone |

Subject: ADD: The Twelve Apostles From: Sorcha Date: 10 Mar 03 - 10:15 AM THE TWELVE APOSTLES Jesus has a special job, To show the world the love of God But wondered if when he was gone, Someone would carry on. So Jesus chose some of his friends, And all on whom he could depend. He chose them from his followers And there were twelve of them CHORUS: There was Peter and Andrew, James and John, With James the less and his brother Jude. There was Philip and Bartholomew There was Simon and Matthew There was Judas Iscariot There was Thomas and that’s the lot! Once, while out upon the sea A storm blew up quite suddenly The apostles thought that they may But Jesus calmed it down, He showed them what the flower was And all the beauty of the earth And how he cared for it with love, With nothing else but love. Subject: Lyr Add: The Apostle Song/Zacchaeus From: Sorcha Date: 10 Mar 03 - 10:32 AM I found 2 versions of this, don't know if it is the right song or not. If there is more, I didn't find it: Version 1 Zacchaeus was a wee little man, A wee little man was he, He climbed up in a sycamore tree, For the Lord he wanted to see; And as the Saviour passed that way, He looked up in the tree And He said: "Zacchaeus, you come down, For I'm going to your house today, For I'm going to your house today. Version 2 Zaccheus was a very little man And a very little man was he. He climbed up into a sycamore tree, For the Savior he wanted to see. And when the Savior passed that way, He looked into the tree and said "Now, Zaccheus, you come down, For I'm coming to your house for tea" |

Subject: ADD: Zaccheus From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Mar 03 - 02:08 PM Hi, Jawbone - I don't think it's the one you want, but there's one I recall that goes like this: There was a man from Jericho called Zaccheus There was a man from Jericho called Zaccheus Now Zaccheus, he was small; and the Lord, he was tall But the Lord loved Zaccheus better than them all. I think it was written in the 1960's by Sister Miriam Therese Winter of the Medical Mission Sisters. She has accomplished some remarkable things in recent years, much to the chagrin of some of the "boys" in Rome. One or two of her songs are in the Rise Up Singing songbook, but I couldn't find "Zaccheus" anywhere by in the dark recesses of my memory. -Joe Offer- Well, I did find it. It's unattributed in this source, but I think it's by Sister Miriam Therese Winter. It's on the Medical Mission Sisters 1967 LP, Joy Is Like the Rain, and I believe all the songs were written by Sister Miriam Therese Winter. Looks like I may have remembered the chorus wrong. ZACCHEUS Chorus There was a man in Jericho called Zaccheus. There was a man in Jericho called Zaccheus. Now the Hebrews, they were tall, but Zaccheus, he was small, Yet the Lord loved Zaccheus, better than them all. 1. The Lord went walking one day through Jericho town, And the people began to gather from miles around. But Zaccheus, he couldn't see, so he climbed a Sycamore tree, And the Lord looked up and said, "Zaccheus, come down." 2. The Lord said, "Zaccheus, I am dining with you today. Zaccheus, I come to your house, come lead the way." Then, Zaccheus, he gave a cheer, but the people began to sneer, "This man is a sinner, does the Lord seek lodging here?" 3. Now Zaccheus was small of stature, but he could show, That a man who is stout of heart can grow and grow. "If I have cheated young and old, I restore the goods fourfold." And salvation came that day to his whole household. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THERE WERE TWELVE DISCIPLES From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 11 Mar 03 - 09:20 PM From Daily Vacation Bible School about 1958 - learned this at a friend's "New Christian Reform Church" - we got "team points" for memorization - it stuck and to this day it helps in trivia games.
THERE WERE TWELVE DISCIPLES
Tune of "Bringing in the Sheaves"
There were Twelve Disciples Jesus called to help him.
Jesus calls us, too. Jesus calls us, too.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: There was Peter and Andrew, James... From: Haruo Date: 11 Mar 03 - 09:37 PM Several years ago I submitted "There were twelve Disciples" to The Cyber Hymnal, where it resides to this day, but neither they nor I have been able to find anything on its authorship. (Gargoyle's date of no later than 1958 is helpful but not surprising; I learned it about a decade later, I think, probably in a Presbyterian context.) The Cyber Hymnal shows John Newton as having written a hymn entitled "Zaccheus climbed the tree", but this is unlikely to be the one you're thinking of. Haruo |
