In getting the tune from my dad for Zuni Mountain Pool, he tells me it is the same as Out On The Texas Range. I know the tune, but not the words and didn't find either one in the DT or the Forum.

Does anyone know this one?

Thanks,

kat

Just guessing here, but could he mean "Texas Plains"? This was a Western tune of the 1930s by Stuart Hamblin and his Covered Wagon Jubilee. Can't remember too many words of this, but the closing line of each verse was "...out on the Texas plains."

I remember one with that line from the days of the movie cowboys, but that isn't the title. Some scattered words-
I want to learn to rope and to ride - out near the great divide - You can hear the cattle bawling - you can hear the coyotes howling- you can be a cowboy's sweetheart - Oh, yes, "I want to be a cowboy's sweetheart."
The wrong one. The tune doesn't fit the Zuni Mt. song.

I'll have to call dad, again, later this week and get more info, but neither of those sound likely. It's one he says he is not sure too many know, like the Zuni Mtn. song. I think when he sang a bit of it to me this morning it started out almost the same, i.e. I am a Texas cowboy/out on the Texas Range

I'll try to get the tune up, soon.

Thanks!

I have found 2 different songs called "Out on the Texas Plains." There may be more.

Here's one recorded by Red Steagall & the Boys in the Bunkhouse, on "Wagon Tracks," Shanachie CD 6061, 2002. This excerpt is transcribed from a sound sample at Barnes & Noble:
The Indian owned the Texas plain; he knew every hill and dale.
He led the race, but in the chase, we seldom found his trail.
The sun burned down on the broken ground; the water holes were few.
How many died on a dreadful ride, only the buzzards knew.
The plains were full of buffalo as far as the eye could see.
Their bellowing made for a fitful sleep for all the boys and me.
And when they ran, their rumblin' gait shook the ground...
Here's another one, performed by the Riders of the Purple Sage, on "27 Hits Performed Live," Aim CD 71502, 2000. This sound sample was found at CDUniverse:
I want to drink my java from an old tin can while the moon goes riding high.
I want to hear the call of the whippoorwill. I want to hear those coyotes cry.
I want to feel my saddle horse between my legs, riding him out on the range.
Just to kick him in the side, make him show his step in pride, out on the Texas plains.

Each night in my dreams, somehow it seems I'm back where I belong...

Heya! Thanks, Jim. I'll run those by dad tomorrow and see if they ring any bells. I did listen to the tape of him singing Zuni Mtn Pool, today and will get it online in the next few days.

Thanks a bunch,

kat
