Hi there everyone --

This is my first post. Boy, am I ever impressed with this place!

I've played traditional Irish music on the fiddle for quite some time, and my interests are just starting to branch out to British folk music (the Alan Lomax collections from Rounder, Anne Briggs, Steeleye Span, Fairport, etc). The Irish music scene is extremely strong here in New York, but I don't know if there's any scene to speak of for this kind of stuff. Also aside from places like Virgin Megastore and Tower Records, I don't know of any good places in the city that have strong folk music sections or carry this kind of music. So I'm looking for recommendations as to the best places to buy this music in the city. Ordering from Amazon or the Rounder website is okay, but it's fun to browse, too!

Also, what's a good strategy for tracking down out-of-print albums, short of eBay? I don't know of a lot of used online CD stores, let alone know if they're reliable or not.

Any recommendations along these lines would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

xo,
E. Bess

Hi E Bess and welcome to Mudcat. If you are so impressed why not join up ? Cannot help you with Outlets in N Y as I am in West london ,U K,
The Mudcat C D's are an excellent cross section of the music styles played and sung by Catters and are as good a place to start as any.
I am sure you will get all sorts of very usefel suggestions from Catters your side of the pond, but good luck with the music.

E.Bess... I am an NYC Uilleann Piper, I have had a band - comes and goes, called Sorcha Dorcha. I grew up in the Irish Ballad tradition and you can find a lot of my songs posted here, I wrote Engine 33 recorded by Mary Courtney's band Morning Star... Sessions are not terribly song friendly often in NY, other than O'Niels and a few others, they tend to be ballad sessions or tune sessions. Drop me a PM with a mailing address and I will send you a few of my CDs. It is a mix of traditional and modern ballads in a traditional mode, mostly on human rights issues - I work as a political scientist for marginalised cultural isolates such as Irish Travellers and Roma (Gypsies).
Cheers
