Subject: RE: BS: US Drafts Dolphins! From: JenEllen Date: 24 Mar 03 - 12:05 PM An old quote from my office "wall of stupidity" "Dolphins help clear mines or help prevent enemy divers "from blowing up a ship," said Tom LaPuzza, a spokesman for the San Diego-based Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, which runs the Navy's $15 million Marine Mammal Program. "They protect people's lives. Basically, that's what they are there for." (NCTimes 5/6/01) As much as I dislike the thought of humans killing other humans, the thought that they are forcing animals to aid and abet is revolting. ~JE |

Subject: RE: BS: US Drafts Dolphins! From: katlaughing Date: 24 Mar 03 - 12:56 PM Just like Buck Henry's Day of the Dolphins, which, if you haven't seen it, was a wonderful movie with George C. Scott in 1973. Well worth watching. There is also this threatening dolphins: One of the most successful wildlife conservation victories, dolphin-safe tuna labeling, is now in danger. Foreign trade interests want to turn back the clock on U.S. marine mammal protection laws passed 12 years ago. If they succeed, canneries will be allowed to apply the dolphin-safe label to tuna caught in the eastern tropical Pacific by the barbaric practice of chasing and encircling dolphins to catch the yellow-fin tuna that swim beneath them, a practice that ruthlessly has killed more than 7 million dolphins since the late 1950's! Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans will soon make a decision that will determine the fate of labeling so IMMEDIATE action is required. You can send a letter of protest by clicking here. I suspect these folks wil have something up, soon, for the war-abused dolphins, too. Interesting history on the "Dolphins of War". The US was supposed to have "mustered out" all of their dolphins several years ago. Yeah, right... If you aren't afraid of being put on some "watch list" you could do the following: If you're as appalled as I am by this use of animals, please call the Navy Public Affairs Office at 703-695-0965. |

Subject: RE: BS: US Drafts Dolphins! From: GUEST,an X soldier Date: 25 Mar 03 - 10:54 AM Does anyone else think that people will be more upset over a dolphin dying than a soldier? I do. cos dolphins are cute and so lhuman like all well and good but soldiers are human but they cant really see that its a person inside the uniform not just a soldier sailor or airman but a real person like you or i Dylan |
Subject: RE: BS: US Drafts Dolphins! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Mar 03 - 04:11 PM The US had better try to hush this one up if they want to keep the British on side. The idea of tricking animals into doing this kind of thing is pretty disgusting. |

It is a wonderful program that has the potential to save countless HUMAN lives.
The sea-creatures LOVE the interaction and the training...and they are much more efficient than a human in underwater swimming.
Sincerely,
In "dry-lander" Why-oming terms...think of them as "smart sheep" - who prevent.... rather than give "thrills." |
Subject: RE: BS: US Drafts Dolphins! From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 26 Mar 03 - 02:04 AM I heard on KPFA today that the US recently bought thousands of monkeys from Morocco--to be used detonating landmines. That'll probably save some human lives, too, Garg. I imagine they trained them using dummy mines that yielded treats when the monkeys pulled on the detonator. The downside--each monkey can be used only once. --seed |

Subject: RE: BS: US Drafts Dolphins! From: Don Firth Date: 26 Mar 03 - 12:44 PM During World War II, someone hatched up a plot to attach small incendiary devices to bats and release them over Japan. The idea was that they would roost (upside down, as is their wont) under the eaves of Japanese houses, then suddenly burst into flame, setting the houses on fire. Didn't work all that well, because the bats didn't always seek out the kind of real estate that humans do. Kinda tough on the bats, though. At first I thought they were talking about the Miami Dolphins, and I figured Jeb must have had something to do with it. Gives a whole new dimension to the idea of "Coalition Forces." Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: US Drafts Dolphins! From: Rustic Rebel Date: 27 Mar 03 - 02:12 AM The Government wants to use these animals, yet they are harming them right now by trying to implement the low frequency active sonar system, which has the potential to deafen every marine mammel living in the worlds oceans. If you don't know about this I will give you a link to read a little about it. nrdc.org Something we should be concerned about I think. Peace. Rustic |
