My better half and I are going to the far north of Scotland ( Wick, Ullapool, Scourie and Isle of Skye) for our Silver wedding anniversary between 5th. April and 10th April. Do any Mudcatters know of sessions in the area during that time. Your help will as always be appreciated.

Hi John,

Here's a couple which may be sessions or regular music spots:

Dunvegan Hotel, Dunvegan, Skye- weekly Thrursdays 9pm
Plockton Inn, Plockton, Wester Ross- weekly Thursdays 9pm
Edinbane Hotel, Skye- weekly Fridays and Saturdays 9pm

These from 'Ceol Beo' which is a monthly traditional music newsletter based in Inverness. There are lots more around Inverness, Fort Augustus etc if you're interested in those too. The sessions list is headed 'sessions...and things' hence the caveat above.

Check the Craggan Hotel in Melness (on the Kyle of Tongue) - they sometimes do traditional music at the weekend. I don't recall the phone number, but I can dig it out for you, if you need/want it.

There seems to be more music on the East coast than the west particularly around Perthshire.
Have a look on albafolk.freeserve.co.uk for info and links to clubs .

If you can pop into the Taybank Hotel in Dunkeld any day or nightthere is some thing happening ,if not start it.

The change in management is an improvement. You don't have Dougie hanging around acting the maggot. And musicans get treated better as well. Staff were very nice,

Have recently been on holiday to Argyll & here's what I found.....

The session on a Sunday afternoon in the Oban Inn, Oban no longer happens. It's been moved to the Kelvin Hotel, Oban & starts around 4.30pm on a Sunday afternoon. The musicians weren't sure how long they'd be using that venue, but they're all keen so I guess if they move elsewhere the landlord will be able to say where they've moved to.

There is occasional music in the Walker's Bar of the Inveroran Hotel, Bridge of Orchy - but this just happens, there's no telling when! Also, if it's not peak times they may not be open, but it's worth a look.

There is a fantastic session held every 3rd Sunday afternoon in the Puffer Bar on Easdale Island. You'd be amazed at the amount of quality musicians living on that tiny island - population about 50 total? There is a foot ferry operating from Seil Island - the last ferry back to the mainland is before 6pm so check with the ferryman or you'll get island-locked. Also the ferryman has lunch between 12.50pm-2pm.

There are regular (in holiday season) Thursday evening gigs at the Barn, Lerags, Oban which are worth going to listen to, the Ceilidh Band are excellent musicians & very up for visitors floor-spotting! The beer's good too!!!

It was also mentioned that there might be a 1st Sunday afternoon session in the Museum at Kilmartin but I didn't get to this to check!

Also in holiday season there are weekly ceilidh's at Ardbrecknish House on the shores of Loch Awe by Dalmally. We were out of season so I didn't get to this either, but the landlord said we could strum & sing in a corner of the bar if we wanted to - never got around to it though.
