Sounds like a wonderful group of sea music folks.

Give Margaret our best wishes on vintage 60. But I beat her to the gate by about 8 months!

Hello fellow shanty singer

Naturally The Roaring Forties, with Danny Spooner & The Rocky River Bush Band - what a session - 6 Forties, 9 Rocky Rivers & Danny - & a huge audience raising the rafters. The only one not singing was the Sea Captain in his yellow sou'wester & wet weather gear, but he was made of papier mache! (spellcheck didn't like that, but the Oxford Dictionary did). I have pics so can send you some (maybe even get them scanned)

Another event was Three Score & Friends - Margaret's 60th birthday.

One of he themes for the National was Girt by Sea - lots more songs about the sea, whaling & other nautical stuff.

bye for now

I don't like this site it brought up some weird messages, but I love their music, I have 2 of their CDs & another made with Danish sea shanty singers

Back home again - after meeting lots of mudcatters at different times, listening to lots of music, singing along to many a shanty, & buying 13 new CDs. I got a ride back with Bob & we listened to some of his new CDs.

Some mudcatters are off to the next festival (I wonder how many messages JennyO will have waiting when she finally gets home - I had 65 & 39 were spam/crap)

hurry up next Festival.

I'll have pitched my little tent by lunchtime tomorrow and hope I can make it to the Wig and Pen. Last time I camped about 50 metres inside the Shell servo gate, OK apart from the hundred djambes that play in a nearby pavilion.

The Met Bureau site tells me that the 7 day outlook is Fine, Maximum Temps in range 16 - 18 and overnight Lows of 2 - 4. Not as bad as last time but still 15 degrees less than I'm used to in Bris overnight.

Looking forward to the National immensely.

Regards, John

The pub will have stopped serving food by 8pm but you are welcome to bring in your take away and eat it over a drink. There are plenty of eating places nearby that I can direct you to.

See you tomorrow

Slight amendment to what I said yesterday. They tell me that we are actually on the same side as building F, on the side nearer to the festival, just near the toilets. Must be very close to the Palladium. It's a good thing I don't like going to bed early!

This might be my last post before I go - I won't have much time in the morning - so see you there, guys!

We'll be up the road near the Shell garage where there are a few powered sites. The space between the pavilion where the shop & brekkie are, & the pavilion where the dancing happens will be filled by a ginormous tent - the Palladium, so there will be less space for camping along that side of the road. It'll be a long walk after late sessions in freezing Canberra weather (weather report courtesy of the bloke from the caravan company).

Pack lots of woollies.

Good, this should be a nice way to start the festival. Still don't know if they have any food though. Anyone know?

Lyn Mathieson rang me today. They are down there, camped next to Forbes, who is keeping me a spot, and we will be opposite building F. If you look for their big camper, the Tardis, we should be easy to find.

How can I be at 2 places at once? buggerbuggerbugger

sandra

Jenny - at least 1 Mudcatter's significant other will be there. I will be needing a ride so I thought of asking my neighbours if they wanna come along. Everyone knows Jack, (tho Kathy is more of a shy violet, but lots of you know her too).

Well, I'll be at the Wig and Pen on Wednesday night, and hanging around near the Merry Muse at 1pm on at least some of the days - I'll have to check out the program.

Anyone mind me bringing along a non-mudcatter or two to the Wig and Pen? And does anyone know if they have food there?

Ooh, this is getting exciting! I have already started loading the car.

Greetings from another chronic Mudcat lurker.

I'd love to say hello at the National on Friday or Monday at the Merry Muse. I have a Verandah Music commitment on Saturday and there's a crazy Boxing Tent thing on Sunday, but the other days look OK.

Bob probably won't have time to make more badges, but you'll recognise me. I'll be the fat, bald, bearded, middle-aged man caressing a glass of red wine.

Five more sleeps.

G'day yet again,

I PM'ed John to say I had included his name in the badge run on 'first principles'. I'll be linking up with Rob during some recording sessions, so it's not open season ... I'll gather up some details and PM them to John.

duart/ Jock: I'm away from the laminator now ... and off to Canberra Monday morning ... but I have a stock of blank badges and some texta colours ...! (I was looking for a fine point paint-based pen in a good colour ... but no success - yet.

I'll do my best to be at The Wig & Pen ... present schedules don't seem to raise any problems.

Bob Bolton

G'day all Assie Mudcatters,
I didn't know that there were so many of you!
Loved reading the e-mails to this thread.
I've been living here in Canberra for the past 11 years teaching drama at the Boys' Grammar School and attending the National each year on my own or with some friends who enjoy folk music. I'd really like to meet up with some Aussie Catters at the Wig and Pen on Wednesday night if you don't think that's too pushy of me and I'd Love to have a "Catters" Badge made With the name Jock on it so that I can make contact. I will be the small Scotsman with the short Silver hair and I hope to see some new friends there.
Kind Regards
Jock mcLean

John - The 2000 National was my first, too & I was so cold in my new tent (covered in sleeping bag, cotton picnic blanket doubled, newly bought second-hand woollen blanket folded in 3, coat, dressing gown, jacket, fleecy vest, towels ...everything I could find) that I now hire a van!
Bob will be spending time at the National Library & Screensound - he has been having an argument (oops, scholarly discussion) with them re the Bushwhackers - they say there aren't enough enough records to reproduce on a CD, he says there are more waiting to be found & he & Rob Willis will be accessioning stuff in the vaults to find the lost recordings. Contact him for details

I have just learnt of a spanner in the works for getting to Hrothgar's hymn session - Three Score & Friends -Margaret's 60th birthday & lots of great songs at the same time. I can't miss either but ...

Hi Oz Catters,

Found out about this thread courtesy of Rich Joy and Tony from Darwin.

I'll be there, camping on-site and I arrive Wednesay lunchtime (to take advantage of the cheapest Virgin flight available).

Hope to make it to the Wig and Pen on Wednesday night, and yes Bob I'd be proud to wear a badge please if you could make one available.

You'll find me in the session Bar and I should be moderately easy to spot. Just look for a 6 foot geriatric with pepper and salt hair and beard playing a double bass - again assuming that Virgin will play ball and allow me to transport it.

Would welcome advice about occupying Wed arvo and Thursday. I believe that Tony and crew are going to the National Gallery, but I'm keen to visit ScreenSound? at some stage prior to Friday.

If all else fails you'll see me at the Troubadour at 6.30 pm on Easter Sunday for David Moloney's wedding - lots of things have occurred in the Troubadour at many festivals but Andrew Patterson says it's the first ever nuptials.

I froze at the last National I went to in 2000, so I'm taking a ski suit this year.

Seeya there.

Cheers, John

Regards, John

Yes, I like the idea of a daily time and place. I think although we can certainly go to the People have Songs concerts and Hrothgar's hymn singing, and the sessions, it would be nice to have times where most of us are not committed to doing anything but hanging out if we want to. I picture a daytime, somewhere around the middle, and somewhere outside that most of us know. I'm open to suggestion.

I have my Mudcat badge!! Bob had them at the committee meeting tonight, he has made 2 holes for either pins or ribbon (we have both).

JennyG's idea of multiple meeting spots sounds good - my other committee has clogged my in-tray with let's get together & meet at ..., oh no I can't, I'm dancing/performing/watching ..., instead let's meet at ... , oh no...

One meeting place I suggested (Hrothgar's singing session 1130am Sun) might be a place to start.

Then of course the late night music or singing sessions, or The People have Songs concerts, or any venue where Callie is appearing ...

How about we make a daily time and place? That's what another group I am involved with do. Those who can make it will be there, and those who can't may perhaps be able to make the next day. We can have more than one photo if you like.
A photo of Hrothgar sharpening his teeth (getting ready to bite Rich) would make a lovely shot, I am sure! He may be able to practice on some poor unsuspecting girl in the meantime.......
I hope the Wig and Pen does food, I will be starving!

I'm borrowing a street directory so it looks like I'll be able to find this pub.

I agree we need another meeting place and time at the festival. I still have no idea which nights I'll be at the singing sessions. We need someone with a digital camera to take group pictures, or an ordinary camera and a scanner.

Jennie G, check out the Greensleeves parody thread. I have the words you want. I'll sing it for you when I see you, if you like. I've been known to annoy a lot of people with it.

Is is possible you could make ME a Mudcatter badge too??? Tony will bring it back for me (they're coming back through Brisbane to see Gordon Bok!) - then I can wear it at Woodford and see if I get any bites!!

Alinga Street is in Canberra City centre, just North of London Circuit. The Wig and Pen is between West Row and Marcus Clarke Street. Coming down Northbourne Ave from Sydney, go through the Barry Drive intersection and turn right at the second set of lights. That should be Alinga Street, then look for somewhere to park. If you miss it turn right at London Circuit then right again and park.

cheers

I received my volunteer info stuff this week including a site map. The Palladium is now not in the middle of the grass oval, it is in the area where the hire caravans have been parked in the past, which means that some of this area can't be used for camping. It's been moved because it flooded in that Friday night rainstorm last year! I don't know if volunteers can camp in the performers area but the office could tell you if you contact them. We like to camp somewhere reasonably flat near a power box as we have a caravan....and the caravan has a heater.......

Some questions.

Where is this Wig and Pen? Or Alinga Street for that matter? What suburb? I find Canberra a very easy place to get lost in, even with a street directory, and it seems I don't have that any more, either. I had a Maxi but it disappeared about the same time a certain person moved out. Hmmm.

Where are most people camping? A friend is arriving the weekend before. He is supposed to be keeping a spot for me and he is a volunteer. Where can they camp? I'm allowed to camp anywhere, including in the performer's area, because I'm part of a team facilitating singing sessions. Can volunteers camp in there too? Anyway, it would be nice to camp close to friends, somewhere flat and close to amenities, and preferably near trees. It would be good if I can give him an idea where to camp.

Bob, are you making me a badge?

good to see the Bums will sneak in (the National without the Bums would be a very sad event)

see ya all Wed or later, but where will we meet? late night singing or music sessions or maybe at or before Hrothgar's very civilized 11.30 Sunday morning session or ...

I think he's genuinely unsure of his responsibilities. He used to have live music there on a regular basis but apparently isn't allowed to any more. Don't ask my why - more rampent regional regulation I suppose.

G'day,

JennieG: I had made out a badge for you - I knew you would be there ... and doing a volunteer stint. If you put the caravan where it was last year, you'll be well at home ... on the fringes of the (mostly ex-)Bankstown Mob ... the cluster around Ralph Pride and his girls' tents.

Most of that group used to hang around in "Mitzi's" Coffee Shop ... next to the "Torch" Newspaper office ... in the 1960s. They will be down there early too, as most of them are doing pre-Festival volunteer jobs.

I'll be arriving around Monday, since I'm hoping to get in some research time at the National Library and look in on some of Rob Willis's recording work. (And I will be in a shiny new Subaru ... which I pick up in 3 hour's time!)

Yorkshire Tony: I'll try to find my way down to the Wig & Pen ... I had better remember to transfer the 3-City Road Directory when I get the new car.

Your publican sounds to be a bit of a worry ... not a Pommy ex-patriate who thinks England's evil laws hold sway in the colonies - is he? We had that problem at the first Morpeth Folk Festival, in the Hunter Valley, after the Newcastle venue was damaged by the earthquake. One Pommy publican ordered all singers to shut up or get out ... or he'd lose his licence for allowing unlicenced singing. Everyone drank ... and sang ... and played ... at the other pubs all the rest of the weekend.

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Hi. I've reserved two tables at the Wig and Pen in Alinga Street from 8pm on Wednesday 16 April for anyone who feels like a pre-festival drink. The Wig and Pen is a home brew pub and makes a decent drop of ale. The publican isn't sure about the legality of unsolicited live music in the ACT these days (sounds like the UK) but he won't object to a few quiet tunes if someone spontaneously produces a musical instrument.

See you there.
