Funny, the old "Celtic" industry isnt it? Now, I'm Celtic(Cornish, moved to Cumberland), I play traditional music from Cumberland, which means "land of the Celts". I play in a band that plays fiddle and accordion traditional tunes from Cumberland, jigs reels and hornpipes. And I'll be playing at the Kilkenny Arts Festival in July, and I work all the tinme throughout Ireland, presumably because people like the tunes we play. But no, we have no bodhran or low D whistle, we're not "Celtic". We won't be at the "Pan celtic" festival in April. I'd love to be, but there you go. Funny thing, the classification business. But come to Kilkenny for a good old knees up in July, I'll be there.

Might see you in Kilkenny or Cork or Cape Clear or Baltimore in July then for a few tunes? But to be practical, I wouldnt count on the icky mess being over then!!

Don't get me started. Unfortunately I'm one of those people who does more than watch "partyline" media... and I've got lots of opinions.

So any info on this fest? Also I will mostly be in the south of England and looking into music there (thanks to the kind folk who answered a Jan thread with websites on music), if we're able to make the trip... The government may not let me fly if the new security regs are put in place... They seem to be majorly into harrassing citizens into being passive for fear of losing their freedoms(!)...

greg - excellent point. Seems to me that there was some talk about that situation back in the 80s but I'm not involved with the 'festival crowd' so I don't know what the outcome was. (Obviously 'con' as opposed to 'pro') You'd think that Cumbria would have as much claim as Cornwall ...

Again, back in the 80s, it was a wild few days; lots of fun, largely because BBC Wales/Cymru didn't worry too much that half of its younger producers insisted on going for the booze-up as long as they came back with a week's worth of programming. Big changes in the Beeb means that that whole crowd no longer shows up, so it's become very suit-and-tie audience (yuk) but, hey, it's Kilkenny! There'll be enough on the 'unofficial' programme to make it worthwhile!

Greg, while I haven't attended this festival, I understand it is a better, more genuine, class of "Celtic" festival with lots of traditional dance and music and people who actually speak one or other of the Celtic lanuages. I sometimes go to the Western Isles of Scotland at Easter time and it always seems lots of people from there are away at the festival in Ireland that week.
