To all Bud and Travis and "Folk-Boom" Group Fans:

On March 24, 2003, Folk Era Records will be releasing only the second
CD from the great early 60s folk-boom duo Bud and Travis. (As many of
you know, B&T is sadly underrepresented among folk-era groups on CD.)
The double-CD is entitled "The Santa Monica Concert," and it is the
complete March 24, 1960 performance of Bud and Travis at the Santa
Monica Civic Auditorium. The songs are presented in the order they
were played that evening. Spoken comedy introductions (for which B&T
were well-known) are indexed as tracks in and of themselves, so that a
listener can more easily jump to a favorite part of the performance,
whether a song or an introduction.

The CD is available for pre-order on the Rediscover Music Web Site at
http://www.rediscovermusic.com. You can also order by phone by
calling (1-800-232-7328 M-F 10am-5pm Central Time) as soon as today
(3-13/03), or by mail at:

REDISCOVER MUSIC CATALOGUE
705 S WASHINGTON ST
NAPERVILLE, IL 60540

For anyone in this group who has not heard Bud and Travis . . . TREAT
YOURSELF!! Amazing classical guitar playing, perfect harmony vocals,
and exquisite choice of material. B&T (Bud Dashiell and Travis
Edmonson) were best known for their lovely (and extremely authentic)
renditions of traditional Spanish/Latin American folk songs (boleros,
serenatas, juapangos, etc), but they can throw down the "American
folkie" stuff as well or better than anyone, as well!

Be sure to pick up the CD if you are already a fan, or give it a try
if you haven't heard them before. You will thank me--guaranteed!

Tom

Tom, I copied the information on your website on how to play the B&T strum. Hope to have time to master it.
Do you play? If so, do you ever go to the Plank Road jams? - would love to hear them do some of the B&T songs. I have done Tomorrow is a Long Time, since I heard them do it --
And that was a loooong time ago, B&T were the stars of my college (Occidental in LA) homecoming concert in '61. The next year it was some new group - Peter, Paul and Mary - who nobody had heard much of.
The LA folk shows used to play B&T a lot in the 60's and, I think, the Mexican duo that B&T based their arrangements on. Was there one or two Mexican duos after which B&T patterned themselves?
I've got the lp of that Santa Monica concert, the jokes were generally not the greatest, but I still play in "frog minor"!!
I've always enjoyed what I call the cabaret style of folk music and B&T were some of the best at that. Much better musicians than their pale imitators, the Bro Smo.

Hey, Tom- you covered every minute detail except the songs! I still have, and play, everything they put out on vinyl. Tell me what I'm missing that would make me want the CD.

It was from this album that I first heard and learned "Johnny I hardly knew ya". Will have to get this CD though I still have the vinyl album.

Actually, there were two vinyl albums - Bud & Travis in Concert and Bud & Travis in Concert Vol. 2. The new 2-CD set presents the entire concert. I have both LP's but they're not in such good shape after all these years. This 2-CD set is indeed long overdue. I wish someone would reissue all their studio recordings.

Regards,
John

Hi Everyone:

I am delighted at the response to my post! Sorry I have been away for a few days . . . I am out of work currently, and job hunting and freelancing take a lot of time away from promoting the Cd and other things more fun and rewarding!

Anyway, I'll try to answer the questions in the order they were posted:

(1) To Chris: I do play a little bit, but I rely on some talents far greater than mine to come up with the tabs and slap strum explanations on the site! I am in a guitar class now, and I was bitched out with some amount of passion just last night by my teacher, who was frustrated that I didn't understand the concept of appregios (sp?). Oh, well! I have a ways to go, but I can put a few chords together coherently at this point. Learned "Brown Eyed Girl" last night. I'll know I have arrived when I can play "Malaguena"! (I know--see ya in a decade!) Anyway, I haven't heard of the Plank Road Jams. Do you have any more info?

(2) As for why you'd want the CD, Steve-O, I think other posters touched on that pretty well. For one, the convenience of a more contemporary CD format--you can play it in your car, etc. Also, CDs don't degrade or damage as easily as tapes or vinyl, and don't at all degrade or damage with even a modicum of care. Finally, I would argue that the new song order is pretty smokin'--it's the exact set they played that night, and it's reproduced in actual "concert" (not stereo or mono) sound. Crank it up, close your eyes, and just TRY to pretend that you're not fifth row, center! Last but certainly not least: think of it as a kind of investment for future B&T CDs. Allan Shaw has told me that if this CD sells well enough, he could very well re-release the entire B&T catalogue on CD. I don;t care how immaculately kept your vynil is: the idea of hearing the "Latin Album" in a pristine, CD-quality sound HAS to be too delicious to resist!

(3) To the best of my knowledge, Tiger, Travis is still alive and well in Mesa, AZ, unless something terrible has happened literally within the last 48 to 72 hours! I am in pretty close contact with Travis and his wife, Rosemarie (she's an awesome lady!). I will definitely check into this, of course!

Anyway, best to all, and PLEASE do buy the CD! Let's get that whole B&T catalogue released!!

I used to have two vinyl solo albums by Travis. One was recorded live at the Troubador in LA and the other was a studio album. On one of the was a tune with (if my old-timers memory serves me well) a lyric like this "...I'm a drifter, I'm a loner......I shared a grape soda with a man from Dakota...."

So, Thomas, you would be the one to know. Are these available on CD, or is the song which keeps drifting back into my cranial recesses and haunting me all these years available?

Thanks. S/W

Dear Southwest:

Indeed, the song "I'm A Drifter" is available on CD through Folk Era records, but on the album "Travis Edmonson: The Tucson Tapes, First Set." More info available here:

http://eserver.org/home/tom/tucson1.html

Use the same order information as for the Santa Monica Concert (which I sincerely hope you are purchasing, as well!).

The original, studio recoring of "Drifter" appeared on the album "Travis On His Own." Info about that is here

http://eserver.org/home/tom/hisown.html

Unfortunately, that record is not yet available on CD. But no worries: the "Tucson" version is arguable superior, and it includes a great spoken intro by Travis, in which he recounts singing the song to an old blues singer (can't remember who it was off the top of my head).

Anyway, best regards, and order those CDs!!

Loved these guys in the 60's, was saddened to have my records of them stolen in an apt. move. Thanks for the info. Hope death of Travis overstated...we've lost too many lately!

I just spoke with Rosemarie today, and Travis is alive and kicking!! Here is an excerpt from her e-mail follow-up to me:

--TRAVIS IS ALIVE AND WELL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact he is singing and putting together a performance that will be available for gigs here and there.--

So, at least we don't have to worry about THAT anymore!

let's go enjoy the CDs!!

Hmmm, maybe we should ask Fiolar.

First, I'd like to say how grateful I am to have what I regard as one of the finest live albums -- and certainly the best Bud & Travis album -- ever, at last on CD. $30 is a bit much, but I don't regret having paid it.

That said, a couple of questions/quibbles:

There's no licensing information given on the package (that I can find, at least). Did you get it from EMI, or does somebody else now own the rights?

Technical information: is this from a first-generation two-track? Remixed from a multi-? Pieced together from the vinyl albums?

There are a couple of places where there's a blank space, rather than applause (cross-faded or otherwise). Why?

Nice liner notes, but why no credits for the songwriters or accompanying musician(s)? There's at least a bassist -- possibly "Buck" Wheat; possibly on guitarron -- who may also be playing the occasional percussion. But isn't he, whomever he is, worth mentioning? For that matter, why no original album art?

Again, thanks for putting the album out. And if you're still reading this thread, perhaps you'd care to address my questions.

Listen closely to the CD's and you'll hear LP-style surface noise. I therefore assume that LP's, not master tapes, were the source for the Bud & Travis Concert reissue on CD.
