Welcome to the Mudcat Jerry, I thought you'd be dead before getting here, glad to see you beat your corpse to the Digital Tradition, now that you're here you might as well know no one makes it out alive. Barry

Lewis Mills didn't make it too far, from what I understand, so I could write a SHORT song about his exploits.

It appears that there are two distinct versions of H&S in existence: the west coast version, as heard on Shanghai'd on the Willamette's and Pint and Dale's recordings, and the east coast variant (the way it's done by folks who learned it from Forebitter's or my recording). I have to admit it's a thrill to watch this song becoming a "folk song". Thought I'd have to be dead for all this to happen.

Keep singing,

JB

I've got this song on a CD called Weighing Anchor, by Shanghai'd on the Willamette, a couple Portland OR guys - Gordy Euler and Jonathan Lay. Lots of good songs, order it from them at P.O. Box 623, Beaverton OR, 97075-0623.
Try it, you'll like it.
Blessings,
Barbara

Jerry should be dropping in after his sail on the HMS Bounty's done with. I figured ou how to do a link into this thread (big accomplishment for the likes of me) & I'm sure once he opens his e-mail he'll pay a visit & like the other folkies here, we'll be seeing a good bit of him. Don't know who the original poster is but if you have any questions on Jerry's stuff go on. Barry

Jerry Bryant, a Downeaster, is it's author, it's on his tape The Ballad Of Harpo & Samuelsen, along with some other gems from his pen. Barry

I'm not the original poster but I have heard the song. Who wrote it?

Yup, are you sharing this with us or maybe looking for more info? This isn't in the DT yet but I'm sure Dick or Susan will insert it the next go round, seeing as they got the author's permission recently. Who's posting? Barry

Song is about two men rowing to France to win a 10,000 dollar prise.
