Subject: Andy Irvine From: breezy Date: 08 Apr 03 - 04:20 AM I've not heard him live before and we have him on Friday at the Comfort in St Albans. Who can tell us what to expect? |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: InOBU Date: 08 Apr 03 - 05:15 AM He is Brilliant! His voice has been compaired favorably to mine. He was in a band called Planxty, and Patrick Street. Tell him Felice Fructer still pines over him. Lorcan Otway of the great unknown band Sorcha Dorcha. |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: My guru always said Date: 08 Apr 03 - 05:40 AM I shall be there to drool over him :-) Seriously Fab guy - loved his work in Patrick Street - can't wait till Friday!!! And the raffle prize is?????? |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: Wolfgang Date: 08 Apr 03 - 06:31 AM I've heard him three times and I would come back for a fourth and fifth... He is a tiny bit shy but a very likeble lad, a fine singer and player and he is good at telling the stories in between. I only have seen him with small audiences (up to 50) in small rooms and I guess he is better in small venues. but not having seen him in bigger ones I might be mistaken. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: My guru always said Date: 08 Apr 03 - 06:51 AM Well, we've got a nice cosy venue at St Albans - looks like we'll be just the right sort of crown for him to perform to :-) Thanks for that Wolfgang!! |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: Strupag Date: 08 Apr 03 - 08:19 AM As he was one of the founder members of Planxty what do you expect but brilliance. Not only is the man a unique and sensitive singer but a tremendous instrumentalist. In his youth he went hitchhiking around europe -both east and west at a time when the cold was was on. He came back with a Bazuka and loads of Bulgarian tunes (at something like 14.5 beats to the bar). He's also partial to a dram after the show! He used to come to Ullapool when I lived up there but not recently. Would someone remind him that the the Highlands are waiting! I hope but am sure that you will have a great night. |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 08 Apr 03 - 08:52 AM He's fantastic - & a nice bloke too. I've heard him in 2 large venues (a tent at a festival & a large pub, both times amplified) as well as a small room where seats were close together & folks squashed onto the floorspace & a good time was had on each occasion. In the small room he told some very interesting stories of Planxty & the early days in Bulgaria. Everywhere we sang along - he has written some great songs, & also sings traditional stuff, including songs collected here in Australia. The theme of the show in the tent was songs from the National Library collections & I was surprised to see an Irish singer there cos I hadn't realised his range. enjoy! sandra |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: okthen Date: 08 Apr 03 - 04:08 PM He's someone I'd like to see but this tour doesn't bring him anywhere hear me but he may be somewhere near you maybe next time. |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: Les from Hull Date: 08 Apr 03 - 05:28 PM Andy is a wonderful singer, musician and songwriter. Enjoy! He's also the man who put the 'angst' in Planxty! |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: Charlie Baum Date: 08 Apr 03 - 05:52 PM Andy Irvine will be doing a house concert for the Folklore Society of Greater Washington (FSGW) on Wednesday, May 7, 2003, along with Rens vander Zalm. Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: GUEST,vl Date: 08 Apr 03 - 06:25 PM Saw him solo and with Patrick Street at McGuire's Hill 16 about 9-10 yrs. ago. The band was great but he was even better solo. Blew my mind how anyone could hold an audience so well with just his Sobell guitar/cittern and that someone could play that fine and sing so beautifully at the same time. Most of all though it was the great song stories he performed. Have fun! vl |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: michaelr Date: 08 Apr 03 - 07:17 PM I've seen him in the duo with Dutch mandolin ace Rens van der Zalm, and the synchronicity between them was unbelievable. Andy's sense of rhythm can be described as quirky, but Rens matched him note for note! Andy is also a great social(ist) songwriter in the tradition of Woody Guthrie. Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: Ebbie Date: 08 Apr 03 - 07:26 PM I've seen him in Juneau, and enjoyed it. Check out the Andy Irvine Polka- a fun one. |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: GUEST,Melani Date: 08 Apr 03 - 08:27 PM He's terrific no matter what or where he plays. Okthen put in a link to his website, which is also terrific, and which he clearly has great fun with. I signed his guestbook a year or so ago and was astonished to get a personal email back. |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: GUEST,Den at work Date: 09 Apr 03 - 08:26 AM If you haven't seen him you're in for a treat. A fine, fine musician and a genuinely nice man. I've seen him a few times and thoroughly enjoyed his shows. He's very approachable and often spends time after shows chating with audience members. Den |

Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: My guru always said Date: 11 Apr 03 - 05:38 AM Is it any wonder Ref, no yellow card for me, just getting prepared to drool *sigh* |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: George Papavgeris Date: 11 Apr 03 - 07:43 AM All of which confirms my original opinion of him, formed when I first heard his solo work (I knew his work from the Planxty days of course): The man is an absolute bastard; people like him should have their hands mutilated at birth, their tongues tied into a knot, and their songwriting lobe sliced off. To have someone like that be also good looking and a nice bloke, only serves to add insult to injury. Who - me, jealous? Seriously though, I'll be right there in the front row, studying his technique. And tripping him up, if I can. And I have my list of requests ready, Breezy; we may have to fight for who gets theirs in first. Though I suspect we will overlap significantly. Looking forward to tonight. Excited, if not quite "drooling" like the less self-controlled MGAS. |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: Singing Referee Date: 11 Apr 03 - 08:28 AM I've never seen Andy Irvine before, but from what I hear, I'm looking forward to an inspiring evening, following which I expect to have a long list of songs to add to my repertoire. |

Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: MARINER Date: 11 Apr 03 - 06:00 PM Does anyone remember him from Sweeney's Men ? Or are you all too young? I have heard a rumour and it's only a rumour, that he may be in the U.S. later this year. If it's true, look out for him, you'll love him. |
Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: Singing Referee Date: 12 Apr 03 - 04:51 AM What a star! Incredible playing, lovely voice, superb songs, engaging style, and what a thoroughly nice bloke! Brilliant evening! Can't wait 'til next time. (Got it arranged Breezy?) Also thanks to Breezy for getting it all together. How do you top that? But..... Subject: RE: Andy Irvine From: mcpiper Date: 12 Apr 03 - 07:39 AM Had Andy do a concert as part of a NZ tour in 1999, a really nice guy. He asked what organisation as putting on the show, when I told him I was doing it on my own, he asked about ticket sales and who carried the risk. I had his fee in my pocket at the time, and told him so. His reply was, " look, see how the show goes, I won't let you take a loss". He was prepared to adjust his fee to ensure I didn't lose. As it turned out the night went really well, and he was a delight to have as a house guest.A top performer and a really nice guy. |

A cracking night; and for me especially so, as Andy after the concert asked for one of my songs, with a view to recording it (Emptyhanded). It may or may not happen, I won't hold him to it of course, but Wheeeee! He is touring the US in May, so Mudcatters there get ready. He is REALLY worth it. More info on his itinerary from www.andyirvine.com |
