He is Brilliant! His voice has been compaired favorably to mine. He was in a band called Planxty, and Patrick Street. Tell him Felice Fructer still pines over him.

I've heard him three times and I would come back for a fourth and fifth...

He is a tiny bit shy but a very likeble lad, a fine singer and player and he is good at telling the stories in between. I only have seen him with small audiences (up to 50) in small rooms and I guess he is better in small venues. but not having seen him in bigger ones I might be mistaken.

As he was one of the founder members of Planxty what do you expect but brilliance.
Not only is the man a unique and sensitive singer but a tremendous instrumentalist.
In his youth he went hitchhiking around europe -both east and west at a time when the cold was was on.
He came back with a Bazuka and loads of Bulgarian tunes (at something like 14.5 beats to the bar).
He's also partial to a dram after the show!
He used to come to Ullapool when I lived up there but not recently.
Would someone remind him that the the Highlands are waiting!

He's fantastic - & a nice bloke too.

I've heard him in 2 large venues (a tent at a festival & a large pub, both times amplified) as well as a small room where seats were close together & folks squashed onto the floorspace & a good time was had on each occasion. In the small room he told some very interesting stories of Planxty & the early days in Bulgaria.

Everywhere we sang along - he has written some great songs, & also sings traditional stuff, including songs collected here in Australia. The theme of the show in the tent was songs from the National Library collections & I was surprised to see an Irish singer there cos I hadn't realised his range.

Saw him solo and with Patrick Street at McGuire's Hill 16 about 9-10 yrs. ago. The band was great but he was even better solo. Blew my mind how anyone could hold an audience so well with just his Sobell guitar/cittern and that someone could play that fine and sing so beautifully at the same time. Most of all though it was the great song stories he performed. Have fun! vl

I've seen him in the duo with Dutch mandolin ace Rens van der Zalm, and the synchronicity between them was unbelievable. Andy's sense of rhythm can be described as quirky, but Rens matched him note for note!
Andy is also a great social(ist) songwriter in the tradition of Woody Guthrie.

He's terrific no matter what or where he plays. Okthen put in a link to his website, which is also terrific, and which he clearly has great fun with. I signed his guestbook a year or so ago and was astonished to get a personal email back.

All of which confirms my original opinion of him, formed when I first heard his solo work (I knew his work from the Planxty days of course): The man is an absolute bastard; people like him should have their hands mutilated at birth, their tongues tied into a knot, and their songwriting lobe sliced off. To have someone like that be also good looking and a nice bloke, only serves to add insult to injury.

Who - me, jealous?

Seriously though, I'll be right there in the front row, studying his technique. And tripping him up, if I can.

And I have my list of requests ready, Breezy; we may have to fight for who gets theirs in first. Though I suspect we will overlap significantly.

Looking forward to tonight. Excited, if not quite "drooling" like the less self-controlled MGAS.

Had Andy do a concert as part of a NZ tour in 1999, a really nice guy. He asked what organisation as putting on the show, when I told him I was doing it on my own, he asked about ticket sales and who carried the risk. I had his fee in my pocket at the time, and told him so. His reply was, " look, see how the show goes, I won't let you take a loss". He was prepared to adjust his fee to ensure I didn't lose. As it turned out the night went really well, and he was a delight to have as a house guest.A top performer and a really nice guy.

His CD with Paul Brady is a gem. It was listed by Acoustic Guitar Magazine as one of the most important 100 acoustic Cd's.

A cracking night; and for me especially so, as Andy after the concert asked for one of my songs, with a view to recording it (Emptyhanded). It may or may not happen, I won't hold him to it of course, but Wheeeee!
