Subject: Lyr Req: waiting for you to say you love me? From: GUEST,Fifer Date: 09 Apr 03 - 04:00 PM Heard on a Sharon Shanon Diamond mountain session cd, but can't make out the words! Can anyone help? |
Subject: Lyr Add: I'VE WAITED AS LONG AS I CAN (Hylo Brown) From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Apr 03 - 11:19 PM The album you're referring to is "The Diamond Mountain Sessions" (2001) by "Sharon Shannon and Friends." One cut is called "Say You Love Me" and the "friend" involved is Dessie O'Halloran, who sings lead vocal. I've listened to a sound sample, and as far as I can tell, it's the same as an old bluegrass song called "I've Waited As Long As I Can" by Hylo Brown, and originally recorded by Hylo Brown and the Timberliners in 1959. Nevertheless, it's an interesting arrangement. You've got Irish musicians playing a bluegrass song in a Cajun style! Lyrics copied from http://www.musicpotential.com/SONGS/BLUEGRASS%20SONGS/Bluegrass%20Songs%20(I)#anchor3397491 I'VE WAITED AS LONG AS I CAN (Hylo Brown) I've waited for you and I've always been true, But this waiting no longer I can stand. I know you've had time, dear, to make up your mind. I've waited as long as I can. CHORUS: I've waited to hear you say you love me, And longed for the day you'd take my hand. I asked again last night for your love so divine. I've waited as long as I can. Done all I can do; said all I can say. Oh, why can't I make you understand? I've wanted you for mine but I've wasted my time. I've waited as long as I can. CHORUS Now I'll jut say goodbye. The tears fall from my eyes, For you have made it plain that I can't win. No one will ever know the pain that I've been through. I've waited as long as I can. CHORUS |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: waiting for you to say you love me? From: GUEST,Alan Ross Date: 11 Sep 04 - 01:40 PM Re-I've waited as long as I can. Numerous Irish and Scottish acts have been recording this song as "Say You Love Me" and spuriously claiming it as trad. Maybe its worth somebody recording the history of this Hylo Brown song. There have been a few hit versions in Ireland when the song was suddenly re-discovered and recorded in different styles by Country and easy artistes. Somewhere along the line somebody didn't pay any attention to the real title of the song or its copyright and called it 'say you love me'. The publishers are American - and obviously will not know what has gone on. The organisations who administer royalty payments and claims have a problem, as there are numerous songs already called 'say you love me'. So poor Hylo Brown has been losing out on his song. If it had stayed correctly ttitled as 'I've waited as long as I can', it wouldn't be so much of a problem - but now its gone out falsely titled as Trad. and under a common title, it's snowballed. Is Hylo Brown still alive? If not his relatives still deserve the royalties he has been unintentionally done out of! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: waiting for you to say you love me? From: GUEST Date: 02 Oct 04 - 04:55 PM I looked into other links on Mudcat's site and note that Hylo Brown only died in 2003. So this song is a modern copyright, and numerous Scottish and Irish artistes who are recording it as trad. under the wrong title should feel guilty! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Say You Love Me / I've Waited As Long ... From: GUEST,Alan Ross Date: 17 Dec 20 - 06:30 PM Runrig fan please always credit the writer when reproducing copyright lyrics. Hylo Brown wrote it and it is quite modern (c 1959). At least the Vatersay boys version is correctly linked with the Mcps/PRS to Hylo Brown, unlike many of the 'Say you love me' (sic) nicked versions. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Say You Love Me / I've Waited As Long ... From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 04 Sep 23 - 08:03 AM it is a modernish country song written and copyrighted to Hylo Brown. But the Irish and Scottish have nicked it, and often placed it under a false title and called it trad. falsely claiming it. Also when something says 'By'.. on Google.. it doesn't mean that the act who recorded it wrote it. The original recording and performance by the writer Hylo Brown had lyrics.. I am confused as to what you are on about Runrig fan? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Say You Love Me / I've Waited As Long ... From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 06 Sep 23 - 07:37 AM I am Alan Ross My comment was that the Vatersay Boys had sod all to do with the writing of the song or lyrics, and that you should not have credited them when you reproduced the lyric. It is a Hylo Brown lyric..not a Vatersay Boys one. You just don't get that artists covering modern copyright songs are not the ones to be credited with writing or arranging them on Mudcat. Perhaps put performed or recorded by, unless they actually did provably write the song. Otherwise you are interfering with historical truth, and undoing the work of others to use this site as an added source of information on the origins of songs. I don't get why you needed to interfere, when the Hylo Brown lyric was already up? As I say the Vatersay Boys had nothing whatsoever to do with the writing of it, they just covered it. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Say You Love Me / I've Waited As Long ... From: GUEST,Rossey Date: 07 Sep 23 - 10:11 AM Runrig fan, it implies it is a separate work.. The Vatersay Boys had nothing whatsoever to do with it. The lyrics (and tune) were written by Hylo Brown and already posted. They Vatersay Boys credited Hylo Brown. It is not the artist performing a modern song or tune who should be named, it doesn't make it a variant - it's just another recording of the same copyright work. This is the recording ID on the MCPS/PRS database. EMI own the publishing rights to the song. I've Waited As Long As I Can VATERSAY BOYS (Brown) Shibhalba Ltd EMI MUSIC PUBLISHING LTD. Anyway, enough said! I'm not sure why this thread was revived when everything was covered. Hylo Brown wrote I've Waited As Long As I Can, around 1959. He and his band first recorded it about 1960 as a single. It's a bluegrass song revived in Ireland and Scotland in a Celtic/Country crossover fusion, sometimes under a false title 'Say You Love Me', and sometimes with a spurious Trad. claim. Many properly credit it, some chance their arm. |
